something odd.....

#1 Post by Haley » Sat Aug 23, 2003 2:19 am

Hagatha said that when the "foolish" male admirers saw Valanice (in the intro), they forgot that she was the most beautiful in her day. But all her male admirers would be dead considering how old she is.

Hagatha's a bit deluded on the whole beauty-thing. She thinks that if all the pretty women are gone from the land, all the guys will go for her. She overlooks the fact that she's no longer a pretty dame.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

It's not hard to imagine her young. Just give her a youth potion.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashm ...

Yes it is! Take a good look at her! Can you believe someone that old and ugly was once young and beautiful when they were young? I sure can't!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

Also after Graham breaks poor Murray, the skull looks intact from the south of the cave. And why can't we see the cross on Graham after he puts it on?

KQ2VGA already had a massive amount of animations, and we felt that adding another large amount of frames, just for the cross, wasn't worth it.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

Indeed.

At least there is a set of animations for wearing the cloak, unlike in the original. Considering that you never actually have to wear the cross, the extra effort would just not be worth it.

If they were to make seperate animations for the cross, not only would that be a waste of time, but they'd need to then make animations for when you are wearing the cross and the cloak. And I believe there are 8 frames for graham in each direction, so we're looking at 64 new frames just for something so small. Now a neat idea (I'm not sure if this is possible in AGS) would be to take a sprite that would "follow" graham around, and be drawn on top of graham.

---------

"Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?"
"Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?"
----------
Sponge Factory

It's possible. The fairy godmother spell acted on a similar principle. The biggest issue remains the time that has to be put into positioning each cross-frame correctly on the character. In the end, you might as well create extra frames with the cross drawn on them because having the cross follow Graham around will make it look like it's floating in front of Graham instead of him wearing it unless you animate it very, very precisely and accurately.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nasht ...

Overlooked as in...not having throught of creating a separate sprite to glue over the background in the Possum-screen to indicate the broken skull from a distance.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nasht ...

About Hagatha and her foolish male admirerers, perhaps she meant the young men that admired Valanice and ignored her.

*SPOILER*
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Remember the lion guarding Valanice's door? He was Hagatha's suitor as a young man, and he said she was attractive when she was young. I think Hagatha's ugliness, green skin, pointed ears and warts are the result of a curse, from practicing witchcraft, after all normal people don't turn green and get pointy ears when they age. Perhaps she turned ugly because of her evil heart.

Why wouldn't the young men ignore Hagatha? That the fact she's too old for them and she's a hideous old toad.

When Angelina finishes the youth potion, she says "all I need DO now is drink it". Shouldn't that be "All I need TO do is drink."?

It's a special sentence structure. I'm not very knowledgable in english grammar (Wolfgang should be able to explain), but I don't think it's faulty grammar.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashu ...

For not being very knowledgable about English grammar, Erpy, you speak better than half of the native English speakers I know! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

Yes, well, anyway... Relight is the resident English major here at Tierra, so he can probably explain in greater detail than I, but basically all that's happening there is that the "to" is being omitted in the infinitive construction, which is not always against the grammar rules. You've likely heard the expression, "You needn't be (something)", which is also correct. I'm not sure what the exact rule is on the matter (again...Relight could probably clarify), but it's not always necessary to add in "to" before a usage of the infinitive of the verb. It may depend on whether the verb is transient or intransient (i.e. whether they require a direct object or not), but I'm not positive. For example, saying, "I need eat (something)" would be wrong, since you would need to eat something (followed by a noun), whereas Angelina was going to do something (followed by a verb). It would be improper to say, "I need do (or wash) the dishes.", since "dishes" is a noun.

Whew...I think that's the reason, anyway! Again, Relight could probably correct me on that but I think I'm at least on the right track! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

~Wolfgang
