How did you achieve the night in KQ2VGA? Does AGS do this?

I've often wondered how this was achieved in the old QFG games. I wanna say alpha blending but in a 256 color game.. meh.

AGS has a TintScreen feature that will darken/lighten the screens. I haven't played around with it much but I think that's how day/night features are supposed to be made. Either that or they used alternate (darker) backgrounds for all of the screens. I believe that the only screen on which it "faded" from light to dark was the screen with the TOWN sign where the winged steed dropped Graham off, so perhaps only two backgrounds (one for day, one for night) were used for the rest of the screens and the backgrounds were flagged to switch to the "dark" version after the second gem quest was completed (and flagged to switch back after you finished your business in the castle).

However, I'm not positive how the AGDs did it in KQ2VGA, I'm just hypothesizing. I know AGS has that feature though.

~Wolfgang

This is best implemented as having two different backgrounds for each scene, a day and a night one, and as you say switching to the "dark" version after the second gem quest was completed.

TintScreen can be good for gradual fades but due to its nature is very slow compared to simply having two versions of the backgrounds.

Plus, a blanket tint can't deal with situations such as the old woman's house, where at night you want light coming out of the windows, whereas they are dull during the day.

Why not use the flashlight plugin? The Tint doesn't down the computer so much and you can darken the screen. Or are you using that plugin but not mentioned it?

It occurs to me that by having pre-rendered night scenes, you can add the little extras to make it more believable, such as stars in the sky.
