Weird screenshot from KQ2

#1 Post by shanti » Tue Oct 21, 2003 9:17 am

I thought this was kind of odd, so I'm posting it:

<img src="http://www.rokworld.com/stuff/KQ2Screen ...

It happened just after I released the pegasus, while taking off on the carpet from the screen just west of him. It looks like maybe the characters from the end cut scene? I haven't gotten there yet, so I'm not sure <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

That happened to me also. I couldn't get the bug to repeat itself though.

I can't see your pic, but from what you described it is what I saw.

"Without the fleet, the contest would be on our home grounds, and war is one contest in which it is best to be on the visiting team." -ADM Nimitz

It's up now...

Sorry I had a little glitch with my web hosting this morning...it's up now <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

I had a similar issue with KQ1...just as the condor dropped me next to the leprechaun hole I saw the flashy rainbow sprite-thing when you get the protection spell just hanging static up in the upper left hand part of the screen.

I also encountered this the first time I played the game, but it was in the screen east of the pegasus, with the hole in the rock. And like navynuke, I was never able to reproduce it.

In any case, it does not matter, since there will be no more updates to KQ2VGA. This is apparently a rare bug, which makes trying to fix it even less important.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... athoth8 at: 10/24/03 8:02 pm

A bug is a bug. If you clowns don't want to fix them, close the bugs forum.

Yeah, but there's this difference between a fatal error that severely hampers gameplay and/or disallows the player to finish the game and a graphical glitch that might not justify the whole enterprise of re-compiling and re-timing the game, and re-distributing it among all the hosts.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

LOL! Have you read the bugs forum lately?!? King's Quest 1 is full of bugs that disallow the player to finish the game!

Hmmm, I haven't noticed any error52 cases myself yet.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashc ...

It wasn't arrogance. To which bugs (in KQ1VGA) were you referring? There aren't any that disallow the player to finish the game, á-la Error 52 (hence Erpy's response), and any others are just minor bugs that are more AGS related than they are KQ1 related (like not being able to run the game under a moldy-oldy version of DOS or having choppy sound on some soundcards) so there's nothing Tierra could do to fix those. A couple of them, like getting stuck behind the woodcutter's cabin, are minor and would only happen if you happened to walk off a certain point of a certain screen. Simply not walking off of that point on that screen will not make the problem appear. Error 52 can't be avoided. The few minor bugs that may remain in KQ1 can.

I've personally never experienced any sort of bug in either KQ that prevents the player from finishing the game.

~Wolfgang

Hmm, can you remember at what point this problem happened? Was it straight away when you tried to use the carpet, or did Graham lay the carpet out on the floor first then it changed to the strange sprite? Or did Graham manage to lay out the carpet, get on it, but then the sprites messed up?

Oh, and hitch, you talk of arrogance, but saying "If you clowns don't want to fix them, close the bugs forum" to a group of people who have spent months of hard work making a game for you to play for free seems rather an arrogant tone to me.

Well said CJ. Oh, and I don't remember exactly when the sprite appeared, I just remember that it appeared... sorry.

Funny Business

CJ: It happens when you click the carpet on Graham. He drops it on the ground, unrolls it and sits on it. Then the wedding view sprite appears just before the text box comes on screen.

I couldn't find any reason in the scripts for why it might be doing this, so I can only assume that the view of Graham unrolling the carpet must have had some kind of 'conflict' with the the sprite used for the wedding view...

I think it can also happen when you fly both TO and FROM the plateau.

I've just been looking into this, because I was worried it might be some sort of sprite cache problem. But the reason for the error is this:

As Graham unrolls the carpet, etc - standLeftB() is called. This calls ReleaseCharacterView, which unlocks the view and enables the idle animation. Then, AnimateCharacter is called to play the Graham-sits-on-carpet anim, using loop 4. As soon as that ends, the idle animation kicks in, using loop 4 of the idle view (which is where the wedding sprites are stored).

This is partly an AGS bug, which I will fix (since it shouldn't use loops 4-7 of an idle animation if the character is set for No DIagonal Loops); but also, SetCharacterView should really be used before playing an animation in order to ensure that things like this don't pop up.

Anyway, that's one mystery solved <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
