Sierra Fan-Remakes

#1 Post by Blackthorne519 » Sat Dec 27, 2003 1:13 pm

Hey Folks,

Well, I thought it would be fun to come up with a list of all the Sierra Game Remakes that seem to be currently underway out there in the vast reaches of cyberspace. There seems to be quite a few of them, at many levels of development, and completion. I figure maybe we can just assemble a list here, and then maybe we can all sleep at night, and the world can continue turning. With all hope, perhaps the sun WILL rise tomorrow. ANYWAY - all games being made are either fan remakes or inspired by the games. Websites given when avaliable. These are off the top of my head...
EDIT:Production Level of each game identified.
EDIT:Added Klitos's Links!

Anything I missed, feel free to let me know. I'll edit the main post. It's just interesting to note what's going on in the remake/fan world. I think it's good for us all to be aware and supportive of each others projects. I know as far as scripting help, the people here at AGDI/Tierra have always been willing to help out scripting issues. Anyways, Happy New Year!

I think maybe you should edit the list with a side
mark of projects completed and projects that are still in
production so people don't get confused, like say thinking that KQ 1 VGA is still in production or something.

Other sierra games worthy of remakes (although i don't think there are any projects for these yet) are Codename: Iceman and Conquest of Camelot.

Blackthorne, here are 2 updates for you to edit to the top:

- PQ2, there's a website, i can't remember where, i think the guy might have given up, but he did used to post at the AGS forums

- LSL3, i helped betatest part 1... all it is is a remake with the same exact graphics from the old version and a mouse GUI... (oh, and the screens are reversed)... Timosity is in charge of this, he posts over at AGS forums and part 1 (up until Patti takes over) is completely done

~ Alan

Blackthorne, thanks for the Project Katrina link! I knew of all the others you listed but this one was new to me. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress they make on it.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... liope42 at: 12/28/03 12:52 am

K,

Yeah, the project Katrina site is nice. I wish them lots of luck; I only found out about them after I spoke with their artist, Corby about his paintings and backgrounds. Sounds interesting, I hope it goes well for them.

Bt.

Blackthorne who is doing the LSL3 VGA remake? Does it have a website?

BTW, the email adress I mentioned was admin@eternal-anubis.com.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 12/27/03 11:24 pm

about the LSL3 remake

#12 Post by Rambaldi0503 » Sun Dec 28, 2003 5:26 am

I can answer that question, Angelus3K, cuz I helped betatest the last one.

There's no web-site unfortunately. It's being doing by a guy named Timosity (i think his previous claim to fame is Saddson Issein or something like that). He used to post things over at the AGS forums. Here's the thread: <a href="http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php ...

He recently finished Part 1 (up until Patty takes over) about a month, 2 months ago. Completely bug-free now, i helped betatest for grammar/spelling errors.

Let me tell you a little about the game: it's the same exact graphics from the old game except they're reversed (so instead of heading left to go to an area in the odl game, you go right). And it's point and click.

Why design the game like that? I think Timosity said something about just wanting to test the limits of AGS and such.

So i guess to answer your questions, it's more of an update than a remake. But he is pretty dedicated, i think he was planning on finishing part 2 (patti's quest) sometime next year.

~ Alan

Whoops, sorry Angelus. While I believe one of Jodo's posts indicated that he wasn't planning on sending his demo/screenshots to you so you could host them, I decided to keep your adress in in case he'd have a change of mind, but apparantly I accidently removed your signature pic in the process.

Okay everyone, I did some major sorting out in order to try and steer this topic back into the direction it was supposed to be. To whoever got his message deleted...nothing personal. Just an attempt to root out every trace of this CBR-stuff which this thread wasn't supposed to be about to begin with.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 12/27/03 11:38 pm

hated manhunter

I hated manhunter (maybe cuz i could never beat either)... i actually still thought the series was the weakest in the bunch

i have high hopes for gold rush; the opening part before you board the ship is one of the best; it was a tough game, but it was great

gotta love the tombstone and envelope with holes puzzle!

i'm hoping for a dark horse to be AGDI's project after QFG2 like Gold Rush! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

I enjoyed Manhunter even though I often felt like I didn't know what exactly I was doing while playing the games. Did anyone else feel that way? It was one of the very few games I used a partial walkthrough for, not so much because I would get stuck at certain puzzles, but because I just wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing.

I still enjoyed the feel of them, the first one especially, and I'd be interested in a remake that was a little more explanatory about the gameplay.

I don't know, though...maybe I'm one of the very few who didn't understand exactly what was going on...

About Manhunter,

I only played The San Francisco version.... but I really enjoyed the post apocalyptic storyline. It was fun - and the graphics were more....well, graphic than other games of the time. The game was intense. It tried hard, but it was confusing sometimes. The interface was a pre-attempt at a non-parser GUI.. I think if remade, the game could be spectacular. The story was dark and cool - but the graphics would have to be very well done. Very dark, and I could see graphic novel/comic book style.

Bt

The Manhunter Games were awesome. I didn't like the interface but if redone as a point and click they would rock.

There are sunsets over other oceans my friend. You know, if Sierra's people would decide to openly defend the company's copyrights and they'd land on our forums, this list would be all they'd need. It's almost a hitlist.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

Yeah, but Erpy, these remakes are openly talked about in the www.sierragamers.com forums as well. Ken Williams even knows about them, although he doesn't have anything to do with Sierra anymore. If you really feel that this thread is a bad idea, I wouldn't take offense to it's removal...... it was just an idea to try and have a topic of conversation that wasn't dealing with a certain remake.....

Bt

Also, if these games are all downloadable for free, is there really a copyright issue? If AGDI and any other group working at remaking Sierra games were actually charging for them, that would be one thing. But all these games are free. It's not like anyone is making money off of old Sierra characters and plotlines.

Don't you remember the story of Disney throwing a fit about the daycare class drawing Mickey Mouse and hanging it on the wall? They didn't have permission to use the character and Disney sued (IIRC). All Sierra has to do is decide that all these remakes have gone on long enough. It is technically their right to stop anyone and everyone from using their characters and plots. I just hope they remain nice about the whole thing. The creators of these remakes are surely their biggest fans.

True Navynuke, but that's DISNEY. They're about as protective as Microsoft.

Sierra hasn't stopped AGDI yet, even though they know all about them. As such, I don't think Sierra cares that much if people makes remakes, at least not if the games can't be bought otherwise.
Pidgeot
-----
Every error you find is the last one.

do not feel guilty blackthorne about your thread.
Even without it anyone can search web and find remakes
and sue the remakers.

Sierra will not sue remakers.Remakers do not cut off Sierra's sales.Sierra is not interested in making remakes because
they would not sell the numbers they would like in order to be profitable. So there is not need to shut down remakers.
Remakers are not antagonists of SIERRA's PRESENT ideas.
Remakers are antagonists of sierra's PAST ideas. But sierra has cut the relation with past.
