Background pictures

#1 Post by JLM5 » Tue Jun 08, 2004 10:33 pm

What do you think of these background pictures?

I'm not sure if I have sometimes far ago shown some of these pictures here earlier, but however: How could I make them better?

These pictures look really, really nice. You show great potential and a talent for graphic art. Keep it up ... you're on the right track! :D

They certainly look authentically Finnish. Which is cool: there aren't enough games with a strong sense of location.

Yeah, they are amazing. Possible improvements...

The wall in the second picture looks perhaps a bit too perfectly straight, flat and sharp. And I don't quite believe the way it meets the ground, you might expect a mound or something.

There's a faint green cast to the sky, have you tried something more blue-gray?

With the overall sense of realism, the tops of the pine trees stand out as fairly stylized. I think adding more detail and a more accurate representation of the branches would help.

If that's a path in the first image, I would think there would be some mud, even with all the heather.

Fantastic!

Fantastic work!

All of them! The 3rd one just need to be slightly desaturated (to about the same level as the other 2).

I don't agree with Snarky! Don't change a thing on that wall!! Nothing wrong there! It looks fantastic!

To me, the wall looks sort of like it's been modeled in a 3D program as a bitmap on a flat surface, and then captured from an angle. So although the texture is bumpy, it somehow looks perfectly flat. That's what I find disconcerting about it.

The lake looks sort of artificial, probably because the right shore seems like a line.

Other than that its fine.

Thanks for comments. Our goal is also to challenge AGDI in making of adventure games... :)

Yes, the wall in the second picture is modelled with a 3D program and then edited with a hyperpen tablet and Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Well, it's almost just my own project, that is, I make most of it alone. However, for example, my father takes part in making of backgrounds and dialogue pictures. Of course, I will also need beta testers and help in translations (in a future when the game is done).

JLM5, I like the grainy feel of the backgorunds. It's different, haven't seen that technique before. I likes!

Well. No one can really tell you what to change. This style is very much original, and perfect in its own way.

The rock right in the middle (vertically) of the third screen (next to lake) is a bit sharp for an object that's further away. One thing you could try is to select the entire rock and add green to it. (not too much... it shouldn't be visible to the casual viewer that the rock is slightly green.) And bring the lightness down just a little bit.

They trees look a little too similar. Their structures are very similar. Try to make them a little different. But it's DEFINITELY a nice start.

That's the nature of firs, Ram. :lol

I see what you're saying, though. And even though the trees look pretty damn uniform in reality, some artistic license may be warranted.

You mind showing us a sprite that will appear on these screens.
(The style is fantastic, but the idea of creating a sprite that would fit on this style gives my nightmares!!)

What do you think?

I think the sprite looks a little odd, like the arms are either too long or the legs are too short, but overall, it looks good.

I thought the same thing at first, but then I looked a bit closer. He has on a really long shirt. If you look at his belt, you'll see where his lower half starts, and he looks like he's more in proportion.

I like how detailed it is (like the lacings on the boot). I feel like he should be a little darker and grainier, to fit in with the style of the background, but I'm not sure. But I like it as a start.

I actually disagree. I think it looks REALLY good. To fix the anatomy, move the belt line up 1-2 pixels, and shorten the bottom part. Maybe move the hand up 1-2 pixels as well. That would make this sprite look awesome. Maybe a little bit more detail on the face too. LOOKIN GREAT.

That IS pretty good, and fits with the colour scheme. But these guys are correct. Move his belt upwards one or two pixels and perhaps even lengthen the legs just a bit more. But it looks great!!

Hmm... for an example look at Destiny's sprite:

Yout wall is professionally done:

I love it.

Regarding the second background, I'd add gray to the mountains.
