New character sprite

I believe it is time to start a new thread (there is over 100 posts in my old thread).

We decided to alter our character-sprite a little. It is better now, at least when compared with the old sprite, isn't it? The background is also redone because I wanted a little darker forest.

I WOULD like to ask you to keep using this thread from now on, even if it passes 100. I'd rather not have lots of threads about one particular project in this forum.

As for the pictures, I see the difference between the versions and I like it. The sprite looks a lot better. The head could be a little larger though.

WOW!! I think your new background and sprite is a big improvment over the original!!

What game are you making? Original or remake?

Keep up the good work!!

The sprite looks really good. Have you made any animations of it yet?

Well, I hope it will be the game that challenges AGDI's games in the quality of graphics, story, gameplay and everything... ;)
Our game is entirely original, not any kind of remake.

And about the sprite, yes, it's walking animations are nearly completed.

And for that reason, you're game don't stand a chance against AGDI who do remakes (for now) and you do original games. These separate departments can't compete.

Thats almost like a footie team challenging a basketball team.

I think it's an improvement as well... being as I am a bit of a larger fellow myself, I really like the portlier look to the new sprite :p

I am a little concerned about the path. It doesn't look as all 3D.(I'm referring to the screenshot with the TOWN sign). Your choice of colour on the path seems unusual so I'm not quite sure how you could fix this.

The path could use some gravel or something like. Definitely needs a texture to add some roughness. It looks very swampy right now.

I noticed there is a lot of trees in the new background and the sign is darker. Are you sure this is the same forest you are showing us? :lol

Yes, it is the same forest!

Actually it's the forest you have possibly seen in the pictures of my old thread "Background pictures".

It's time again to show a new background from my upcoming adventure. It is alchemist's shop (the picture is still under development).

I really like it, JLM.  I can't wait to play your game; I've been looking forward to it for quite sometime.

Keep up the nice work!

Nice to hear your praising comments of my backgrounds and sprites...! :)

Here is a short (approximated) progress report of the game's different parts that are currently done:

Backgrounds: Almost all of them are done.
Character animations: Currently just the hero's animations are done (Look my avatar image!)
GUI graphics: Almost all done.
Dialogue potraits: Almost all done.
Writing and designing: Mostly done.

Other sprites, scripting (except animation tests), music, sound effects and website: Not started yet.

Like you see, my (our) tactic is to draw the graphics first, and don't start the scripting until most of them (backgrounds and sprites) are done.

Currently I hope I can start the scripting in summer (2005).

No, like I said just in the previous post. It doesn't make sense to advertise a game that will not be finished for many months.

Well... here is one of the game's dialog pictures. It is based on a real photograph. He is an old, poor fisherman (in the game's story).  :)

I'm not much of an artist, but you might want to pixelate that picture so that it doesn't look exactly like a photograph...
Standardise it a little bit more with the rest of the VGA style stuff...

Actually, the original photograph was quite different to the game's dialog picture that I posted here. The hat, for example, was drawn afterwards to the potrait. But yes, you're right, that dialog picture is perhaps the most photograph-looking of all the (over 10) dialog potraits of the game. Still I think that it fits the style good enough. Is there other opinions?

The text font is also drawn by me. I couldn't find any totally copyright-free SCI-fonts made for 640x400 resolution, so I had to do it myself.

yeah... the hat and jacket are quite clearly in the 2d style, while the face is clearly a photograph. The beard could go either way. I don't know what would be the best way to make it look less like one, maybe drawing over it or just pixelating it... but I really do think that if I was playing this game I'd stop and look at that photo and be rather upset.
Now, note that I'm not trying to tell you what to do... I assume you want people to be very very picky. I would if I were posting stuff for critique.
Further in the vein of utter pickiness, since you draw attention to the font:
The heights of letters don't seem to be standardised... check out the lettering in this post, and see what lines up with what, what letters should start lower or higher, and where the letters branch or curve... for easier reference:
Talking to yourself is a sign of madness!
You won't want to copy directly, I know, I'm just suggesting more study of the conventions.
Edit: Just me picking some more... the sprites could use some antialiasing around the edges, or something to make them less jagged... I don't know what tools you're using or anything though, so do with all these suggestions whatever you want.

Your characters look stumpy, and silly.  Are you working on it, or is that what you are looking for in the character design?

Don't be so negative, if you wanna give feedback fine, but their is no need to be insulting and at least give some examples of how it can be improved.

Personally I really like the look of the character and artwork in this game and have been looking forward to its release for quite a while

Although I do agree the face could use some more pixelating.
