The most infuriating "dead end" in Sierra's games?

#1 Post by JLM5 » Sun Jan 23, 2005 6:13 pm

What is your most annoying memory of the "dead end" situations in (especially) Sierra's old adventures? Have you ever been forced to restart whole the game because you just forgot to do something in the beginning of the game?

I have at least 2 such a memories. The both of them happened when playing King's Quest 6. The first one was, when I forgot to get water from river in Realm of Dead. The second one was, when I forgot to play bones in the skeleton -screen (in the Realm of Dead).

By the way, are there a lot of difficult dead ends in the game Dagger of Amon Ra? I have never played it, but it sounds interesting game.

I don't think there are any dead ends in The Dagger of Amon Ra. At least I never hit any.

Actually, there is a dead end in Dagger of Amon Ra.

If you don't look at both tablets of Hieroglyphics, then you can't answer the riddles at the end.

Dead ends in the Dagger of Amon Ra...  Yeah, there are plenty of them and most of them take effect in the second to final act:
Fail to get wire from pterodactyl,  fail to get cheese, fail to refill snake oil bottle, fail to obtain smelling salts, fail to complete hieroglyphics translations, (Sort of) fail to find dagger of Amon Ra, fail to collect sufficient evidence (you finish the game but die just the same).
As for the most annoying dead end I've ever run into... that would be the time I didn't realize I need to learn Reversal in Qfg 2.  I played as a Wizard, got all the way to the end, and I couldn't do a darn thing to Ad Avis!!!!

Another Amon Ra dead end;
Forget to pick up the boot of Steve
Actually I was going to mention Codename: Iceman, the game where everything is a dead end, including not checking if the id card you could have forgotten to ask back, was indeed the correct one.

don't  forget lsl2 I can't remember how many times I forgot to do something that I couldn't go back to, and this was after I beat the game before
forgetting to grab the knife, not buying parachute, not grabbing the pin, not buying a fountain drink, not buying the wig,  not grabbing the flower, going over the cliff by the airport and not changing
and that's only the ones I can think off the top of my head. It was a pain in the ass getting a perfect score in that game.

The first time I played KQ5...
I gave the pie to the eagle, not knowing that I had to use that for the Yeti and that I was supposed to just give the eagle half my meat.  Took me weeks till I finally broke down and looked at a walkthrough only to find out what I had done wrong and having to start the whole game over.
Boy that ticked me off.  >:

Oh, oh!
How about forgetting to pick up the cheese from the dungeon (which made no sense whatsoever)
which you could only get out of if you hadn't forgotten to give the necklace to the servant girl (which also made no sense whatsoever)
which you could have forgotten to pick up at the roc's nest (which is a timed event)

KQ2 for me. I had absolutely no idea that there was a limit to how many times one can cross that bridge safely. Had to restart that game.  >:

I got all the way to the castle of the crown once without befriending Jollo. :eek
He threw me in the dungeon. :|
I was NOT in the mood to start all over again...
And in QFG2, I was stealing the blackbird once, and I had no oil for the case! :(

I'm not sure whether the QFG2-one is actually a dead end. You can just leave again and forget about the falcon. I don't believe Ferrari holds it against you if you tell him you couldn't get it.

He killed me when I came back and said that he must keep searching for the Blackbird. :o

Another one in QFG2 was if you dropped the spare change of clothes that was packed by Shema when you left for Raseir.

That led to a funny, yet disturbing death.(With a HUGE death window! Geez!)
I liked dropping the Visa better.

I thought that only happened when you answered "yes" when he asked if you actually got the falcon.

Heh, infuriating? Shouldn't it be "annoying" or something? Cause... it's just a game :p

And I agree, the most annoying ones were in KQ5... and SQ2... SQ2 is a greater dead end than KQ5.

In QFG1 if you don't get that undead ungent at least the day before the first time you visit Baba Yaga then you're pretty much screwed because she'll make you go get that mandrake root which you can't get without the ungent, which you can't get from the potion lady after sunset cuz she closes.  So if you happen to walk in there at night and you don't have it then it's fried froglegs for you come sunrise.  That annoying little detail actually made me have to restart more than once in those times I played the game.

It is I, the master of death lists.  Yeah, Ferrari will kill you if you return without the Blackbird.  If you say "yes" to having it but "no" to him when he asks for the blackbird he'll have you killed by the bartender and say "Yes!  The blackbird is finally mine!"  If you say "no" to having it he'll still have the bartender kill you and say, "It seems I must keep searching for the blackbird..."  Both messages are the same other than that.  So if you're going to go for that bird you sure as heck better have everything.

Hey, remember who discovered that "Return without the BlackBird" Death! :p
I also found another one recently, which gives us 100 deaths in QFG2! :eek
