Heh. I think only the Americans got lazy and removed the 'u'.
It wasn't laziness, it was a modification imposed by Webster. It's more logical this way. What's the logic in taking from French the word 'centre' (which they took from Latin?) and leave it the same? Sure, in French it looks great, but in English Webster thought "center" is more appropriate.
And Erpy, iirc, Dutch had some considerable modifications as such recently? The same applies to German.

Does it really make sense? The two O's doesn't even sound slightly similar. Got nothing to do with 'improvement', but got everything to do with 'going out of the way to be different from the rest of the world'.Kurdt wrote: Gron, I think you confused the words "got lazy" with the words "decided to improve it." It's an honest mistake, typically made by crazy Brits, Aussies, and South Africans.
What you've just said might be true regarding many aspects of the Americans, but please, don't say false things.
The shift from 'colour' to 'color' was not made overnight, in a wish to be different. We all agree that phonetically speaking, English is among the worse from those who use the Latin alphabet. There was a man named Webster, whot thought the same, he had influence and wished to simplify it. If you ask me, the American way - 'center' - is far better than the Brittish way 'centre', simply because it's written as it sounds, as it should be. Same goes to 'color'. The 'u' there serves no point.

I suppose it should be "culler." Whenever I see the non-American spelling of "colour" my mind always wants to pronounce the last syllable like "velour."

Here is an Anti-1337 Manifesto
31337ist have filtered into every place in our society. They work at your school, they work at the store near your house, some of them may even live on your street. These peope are not to be hated, for it is not their fault that the 12-year-olds have lured them into using 1337. These peoply are to be pitied for he way that they are misguided. These are probably the same types of people who buy Linux licenses from SCO.
Scary.... We need a "puke" emoticon for this kind of things.
