While you wait for Quest For Glory 2 VGA try this

#1 Post by TaylorZ » Wed Mar 23, 2005 10:25 pm

Well making a Quest for Glory style game sure is a lot of work huh? Even the AGDInteractive team seems to have taken awhile to compleat their version of Quest for Glory 2 and Hero6 has been going on for years.

Well now I can understand why having tried my hand at it with Game Maker. Anyway I thought I'd share an incompleat project I started a long time ago but never finished. I'm not planning on finishing it so I thought I might as well let people check it out. It's a Sierra style interface although you can't really do much but walk around and fight goblins. There are six screens if you go outside the map you'll be teleported to the opposite side of the same screen you were on. You start in the far north west part of the map. When you die the game starts over.

Hit B to access your backpack Make sure NumLock is on other wise the number Pad won't work

Num Pad 7 8 9 are the three attacks mix them up for better bonuses
Num Pad 4 is Block High
Num Pad 5 is Block Mid

Hit the F1 Key in the game to show the instructions.

Hopefully it will provide you with at least few minuets of fun while your waiting for Quest for Glory 2 VGA to come out : )

requires:
256 ram
probably around 800mhz processor but it hasn't been tested much.

NOTE
Shockwavesound.com doesn't mind me using their previews thats why the music has preview stuff attached to it. You can actually replace the music files with something else if you want just rename them to the same names as the game music files in the music folder.

The backgrounds look good. Did you draw them?

The backgrounds and all the art is 3D render generated. The game is 2D of course though.

cool game, got a few bugs though. Like when you walk off the screen you get stuck on the next. Or the game locks sometimes when a goblin thing goes to attack you...

i give it a 7/10 thumbs up(PS get a thumbs up smily ;) )

Thanks for the review Music Head

The getting stuck thing just has to do with the collision detection being implemented wrong by me, since all the room obsticals are defined by hand rather then by some more reliable automatic error checking process. Clearly this is something that would have to be overhauled if I designed something else with the same mechanics.

As for the game freezing with the goblin, your the first person to experiance that (at least thats told me). I'd be interested to know what you system specs are and operating system?

I won't be compleating this game, but I do plan to release a more stable version open source on the Game Maker site soon so people can play around with it, so if anyone here experiances bugs or problems let me know.

Actually I consider the graphics to be public domain anyone can use them for anything they want or at least use the animations as a template to draw over. If anyone wants a gif files I'll post em.

WOW!!  That is amazing!  Especially for a one person project.  The graphics are great, and the close combat is really cool.  Those goblins are pretty tough.

I just had another go at this, and I have to say the close-combat is very well done.  If only they had made QFG5 with combat like this, it would have been so much better.

Always a shame to see a project with so much potential like this one not get completed.  The graphics, characters, and combat are excellent quality.
