Nostalgia: The King's Quest Series from Past and Future

We'd like to start by taking a trip down memory lane, and remember where it all started. King's Quest 1: Quest for the Crown, is a revolutionary game designed by Roberta Williams and released in 1983, and epitomizes the adventure gaming experience. This game was the first of its kind that allowed the player to interact in an entirely original 2.5D world, and can be credited as the game that started computer gaming on the PC altogether. King's Quest 1 was not only ground breaking, but also history in the making, and was followed by eight more games.

Now in the year 2001, The Anonymous Game Developers at Tierra decided to make a contribution to the realm of adventure gaming by remaking this classic and bringing it back into the spotlight. The game that started it all, created nearly two decades ago by Sierra, should be in every true adventure gamer's library. Unfortunately, many people will not give the game a fair chance due to its outdated graphics, and many computers do not even play the sound. The games are not available anymore, and soon, they may not run on computers at all. We are archiving the game for future generations. We have kept our game faithful to the old design, but have included a point-and-click interface, voice acting with original Sierra talent, VGA graphics, enhanced MIDI music/optional MP3 pack, hand drawn and animated dialogue pictures, extra easter eggs, extra animations, sound effects, and more! The game will first be available in English, but we plan on releasing a Spanish version in the near future. Other languages that the game may be translated into include Icelandic, Danish, and German.

See What the Fans are Saying about the Remake

The King's Quest 1 VGA remake has been tested by a handful of people. This is what the test audience is saying:

Information on Downloading the Game

Starting Wednesday, the game can be downloaded from the official website. On the main page of the site, in the bottom left hand corner, you will see a link under the Top News section. This link will take you to a page that will give you further instructions on downloading the game. If you find any bugs while playing the game, please report them to the new category on the forums designated "KQBugs" or email us. If you would like to write to us about your gaming experience, please email us your comments or stories.

Boxes, DVDs, and Manuals

We have included a 40 page manual in html format with the download of the game. After you download and install the game on your computer, you will have the option of viewing this manual on the launcher for the game. Due to expenses dealing with shipping prices and printing costs, not to mention the sheer size of boxes, we have decided to only make DVD cases for future competitions. This DVD will include original artwork on the cover, and the King's Quest VGA game, and its translated versions on the CD. A separate CD will be made for the Royal Quest game, as both games suit different tastes. We will most likely also include a printed manual for the game. The competition will begin as we come closer to completion of the Royal Quest game. Additional prizes will be awarded as well. Please visit the website frequently in the future to learn more about this future competition.

Future Article on the Anonymous Game Developers and their Game

If you'd like to find out more about us Anonymous Game Developers and our games, Just Adventure Ezines is releasing an article in the near future covering these topics. We will notify everybody on the release of this article on the updates page.

The Progress of Royal Quest

As for the Royal Quest game, we will continue scripting it once the King's Quest 1 VGA remake has been released. All backgrounds, except for one, are completed for the game, and most animations are done as well. The dialogues have been finished, and Anonymous Game Developer #3 is in the process of adding more humor in various places of the game. Some scripting has already been completed. A good estimate of a release date would be late November, as long as we do not run into any major problem with bugs in the game engine again. Beta testing will need to be more extensive for the Royal Quest game as well, since there are several ways to solve the game. We will keep you updated on the progress of Royal Quest as we resume scripting later this week.

The Mysterious Future Project

We have also begun working on a third project as well. Several people have been asking which project this is, and we did not want to mention anything, as we first wanted to get our KQVGA project completed and out to the fans. Once we release the KQVGA remake, we will surprise everyone by making a website for the third Tierra project. Please be patient until we get this website up. It may take several weeks before the website is online.

Fan Participation in Future Projects

As for future projects, if all goes well with the King's Quest VGA remake, we have considered selecting handpicked, motivated members to help us make more remakes. We would use our past experience in managing projects and making games, and help others run their own projects. We would choose artists, musicians, writers, and musicians to contribute to making projects, and we would help out, give advice, and make sure everything is running smoothly. This would allow others to get involved, and for us to release more games in a shorter amount of time. This idea has not been finalized yet, so we will notify you of our final decision.

Closing

From all the Anonymous Game Developers at Tierra, we would like to thank you for your support, and wish you happy gaming with your newest edition to the King's Quest series!
