Who is Jabbar bin Ma'amar and why does he hate me so much?

Unless my escape is key broke, it doesn't appear to exit combat, it only seems to work as an any key.

I'm using a laptop as well, i cant seem to exit combat so i can adjust the controls, it seems to be just a vicious circle of me not being able to do anything. Is there a way to exit combat with restarting the whole game? i haven't saved yet .
