The thing I didn't like about QFG4 was that everything was context-sensitive. You had 2 buttons which controlled basically all physical combat and movement, and when & where you clicked changed what those buttons did. If it had all been keybindable like your combat system, it would have been much better. You have only one of your 15 keys context-sensitive (move back, jump back, or duck/jump) but that's forgivable, especially as all the actions are closely related).Erpy wrote:Really? I personally never saw combat in the series as a necessary evil. To me, it was as much part of the games as dialogue trees, repeating an action 50 times in order to raise a stat and corny puns were. I welcomed the change when QFG1VGA added made battle not be just about stats, but also about timing and a bit of planning a strategy. (to a limited degree) After getting used to the controls (which took some time), I also enjoyed the QFG4 battles a lot more than its early predecessors

I think the combat system is fantastic. Remember when we started in Spielburg and we couldn't even kill a saurus let alone a Brigand? Remember how hard Cheetaurs used to be? The original combat system just wasn't much of a challenge second and third time through. This combat system is going to give the game longevity as there is a lot more depth too it.
I do agree though that it is a lot more challenging than the original. Be patient, practice, run away if you can't take that monster down and eventually you'll be tearing through those Brigands.
Good luck!

To those of you interested in reading it and who missed out on it... the main site now contains a feature about the battle systems where some of the decisions in design and some of the goingons behind the scenes are explained.
