Those memories

#27 Post by BzWarm » Fri Nov 08, 2002 4:18 am

I don't know why, but Kq7 have allways played an important part in my gaming life. It was the first game i bought myself, and my first adventure game (i didn't play much PC before). Now i've played them all and finnished them all... so here's my ranking

1. KQ7 (my first "selfbought" game. Does have a few downers... but still i love it over all other games. The beautifull world... ah, those memories... Now where has the cd gone?)

2. KQ6 (really a masterpiece of an adventure game this is. Awesome story and great gameplay! Graphics are well made for the time also)

3. KQ5 (Much like KQ6 really)

4. KQ1 (the graphics of the original allmost scared me away, but i decided to play through it, finding it to be a really cool game. And the remake by Tierra is awesome!!)

5. KQ2 (i played this one with a friend in my earlier years, so it means allot to me still. But it's not the best in the series. Still, i really can't wait for Tierras remake)

6. KQ3 (great and moody game. Found it to be quite a worthy experience)

7. KQ4 (hmm... not a bad game to be this old... but there's just something missing... ah well)

8. KQ8 (Blah! i really hate this game! This isn't Kings quest at all, just a cheap Diablo clone... And the foggy, blocky and totally outdated graphics doesn't actually help. Bad mistake. Wasn't worth playing through!)

My favorite must be KQ5. Yes it may be buggy or full of dead holes. Who cares? Well everybody does now.

I didn't back then because of this:

1. It was the first 256 color Sierra and I just bought a Soundblaster. So it was my first 'multimedia' experience.

I just played for days enjoying the music and graphics without solving many puzzles.

2. It always has been the only Kq5 I really got into. I must admit I didn't like parts 1 2 or 3 at all at that time because of the in my eyes crappy graphics (also because when I started playing them vga was already used so playing those oldies was a bit frustrating) In KQ5 I loved the fact I could just wander around not knowing what to do, but in the oldies I hated that because of the simple graphics

3. I didn't use any help to solve most of the game
And yes indeed getting too much help spoils it, because I just 'worked' myself through the older ones with a solve. Again because I didn't really like the graphics I only thought well, I should have played all Sierras. I am happy that by using solves, you don't remember anything at all , because you didn't really THINK while playing so after 15 or so years I can finally enjoy the remakes without the plot being spoiled

When typing this I am wondering while the other series EGA graphics didn't turn me down so much. I guess I need more jokes to keep me interested and Roger, Larry and the like got me more of those than brave Graham and offspring.

'If you want to shoot, shoot! Don't talk.'
Tuco against random thug

Kings Quest IV

Yes...

Without a doubt my favourite is Kings Quest IV. It was the Kings Quest I allowed myself to get most involved in.

I first played it on its release to New Zealand after having played the previous three - having just started to compose music at that age I immediately transcribed the compositions of Kings Quest IV because I thought they sounded really moody in a beautiful way on the piano - fully fleshed out.

The whole night time section of the game also drew me into it... but I would definately say the music and my own musical development played a big part in my favouritism.

=Aurynnz=

My favorite King's Quest game was King's Quest VII because of the cute characters and the great storyline. I think the girl that did the voice of Rosella did a great job.

I would say that my favorite is King's Quest 6...for the simple reason that it was romantic, with a wonderful story. I loved it so much.

As for the other games:

King's Quest 1: I vaguely remember the first time I played that game...my dad had it on his ancient PC...It's a lovely game, but I could finish it in a day. It was a bit too easy in parts, but I loved it. The giant scared the heck out of me. And that dwarf...Ick.

King's Quest 2: The original was one of the most boring KQ games, as well as stupid. The remake is my favorite along with KQ 6. Original made no sense, the story was just disjointed.

King's Quest 3: Scared the heck out of me. It was HARD to do, but I have done it, repeatedly. It takes a lot of patience and my heart often raced, looking at the time, trying to calculate what I could do before Mannanan came back. And the ending...YAY!

King's Quest 4: Oooh...that one has to be my second favorite along with KQ3. I'm almost feeling like replaying it again. It's scary and exciting. And who could forget Lolotte? And Edgar?

King's Quest 5: Decent, but I liked KQ6 better. And the dead ends were part of that. Shame, because it is a wonderful game.
"Scary thought: 50% of the world's population is below average intelligence."

http://snowelf.livejournal.com

KQ5

#33 Post by Tamarlynn » Wed Dec 11, 2002 3:43 am

I have to say that I like KQ5 the best, the only reason why though is because it was the first KQ game I had ever played. I got it for Christmas in *yeesh...* I belive 94. KQ6 + KQ7 were okay (but like someone said before, KQ 7 was a little annoying with the wand). I have been wanting to get the original KQ games for my computer, but unfortunately with my Windows XP Professional, it's impossible to play those games, since it doesn't support DOS games. (I am desperate to play my KQ 6 & 7 again!).

KQ1VGA rocks!!! I only started it the other day, and with work, I only get a chance to play on the weekends. But I'm loving it so far!

Favorite-to-least-favorite:

6: Better-written than the other KQ games - possibly because of Jane Jensen's help - and with fewer dead ends than any of the ones before it, [1] save KQ1, KQ6 has the best graphics, the most clever puzzles, and the most carefully developed gameworld of all of the series. The branching gameplay offers a lot of replayability, and the multiple solutions to the puzzles help prevent bottlenecks. Fun.

1: Well, it is the most innovative of the series, definitely, as it was the first "3D animated adventure game." Besides, it's still pretty playable, and, as a special bonus, it doesn't insist that the player get that ridiculous Rumplestiltskin riddle correct.

3: Too many bottlenecks, but the spellcasting and automap are great features. The plot is somewhat less simplistic than those of KQ1, KQ2, and KQ5, but it's still quite nice.

7: Cutesy - even more so than most of the series - but fun. More player-friendly than the earlier KQ games, especially in terms of bottlenecks.

2+: Better than many of the commerical KQ games. See my review.

4: Whale tongue. Staircase. Searching ground on island. Illogical swimming sequences ("so, I think I'll just swim off to the west and dodge sharks and whales. Then, when I come back, I'll be sure to get swallowed by a whale! But I'd better remember my trusty peacock feather!"). Not exactly the best puzzle design. Furthermore, the manipulative opening sequence was mawkish and hackneyed. On the other hand, the ending wasn't bad, and the music was nice.

5: Whether or not it deserves its reputation as the graphic adventure with the most bottlenecks ever, it's still pretty infuriating at times. The desert-mapping is long and pointless - even the original Zork had some reasonably clever twists to solving its twisty passage maze - and the cat puzzle was truly lousy. On the other hand, the graphics and music were excellent.

2: The most forgettable KQ. Near-zero plot, weak puzzles, an awful briar maze (unless you worked out that what every snake wants in life is a bridle), and a really mean bridge.

8: Not as bad a game as KQ2, but definitely not a KQ game. Endless, poorly-designed battles (whatever happened to dodging to the side?), a weak artifact hunting plotline, a few truly atrocious puzzles, a flat cast of characters, monotonous jumping puzzles, and long load times earn KQ8 a place of special dishonor in the KQ series.
__
[1] But oh, when the dead ends came, they were KILLERS. Like not bringing the right stuff into the labyrinth...

Kq6 is my absolute favorite - it simply has the best plot: it's the longest and with two completely different ways of beating the game it is really awesome. Moreover it's really got the best graphics of the whole lot! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

It's closely followed by Kq4. It was the first adventure game ever that I played - even if it was the last Kq that I ever finished (I got stuck in the whale and only years later when I bought the collection and had already finished Kq1-3 and 5-7 I tried it again. I simply like Rosella and the plot and graphics are quite good, too! I really do hate the whale, the stairs to the organ and the cliffs to Lolotte's castle!

Next is probably Kq1. It's nice and with the remake it's even playable (yes, I don't care for EGA-games <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> )

Then comes Kq8. When I first bought and installed it, I was really disappointed because it's simply no proper Kq. But after I played it a while, I started to like it. I replayed it at least once since then and I still like it - it's kind of a bridge between Kq and Diablo. Once I got used to it, I liked it for itself.

I didn't care particularly for Kq2 and 3 - I mean they were nice but not that outstanding - although Kq2+ absolutely is awesome. It's definitely up with Kq4 and 6! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

The one I really hated was Kq7! How could Roberta Williams do THAT Disney-looks to Kq? The music is definitely great but the graphics are awful! Moreover half of the plot should be rewritten: Valanice keeps running around and crying for her (oh so helpless) daughter Rosella and some parts like the dog-republic are simply ridiculous.

<td nowrap style=filter:glow(color="mintcream", strength=#+15)> Lira Lindriel - - - - - - - Magic is real - unless defined integer!

Backyard Discussions ~x~ Lira's Duchy ~x~ My poems, stories and tags

Favorite KQ

#36 Post by Aeon » Sat Dec 14, 2002 6:23 pm

King's Quest 6, like everyone else, is my favorite. Mostly because KQ1 had nothing worth calling a plot, KQ2 didn't either, I hadn't played KQ3, KQ4, or KQ5, and KQ7 got rid of those wonderful VGA graphics and replaced them with *gasp* SVGA graphics!

There was also a certain advantage that KQ6 had over others of the King's Quest series, which is that you got to rescue, not one, but THREE maidens in distress. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> (Call me what you will, but I like the cheesy rescue-the-girl plots.)

The only thing that really ticks me off is that you can go through the entire long-ending-game, but if you "didn't play your bones" right, you were screwed with no way to ever go back and do it again. Drives me nuts, having just encountered that problem not two hours ago. Grrr...

Yes, that's the only thing I really hate about KQ6: there are quite a few places where you can get stuck by not having picked up something way earlier. The bones is simply the worst of those.
But I also died countless times in the catacombs because I didn't have the brick when I went in! And if you have the brick but not the tinderbox or the hole in the wall, you're stuck as well.

I loved KQ6, it's my absolute fav but there are so many places where you need something you should have picked up eons ago!

<td nowrap style=filter:glow(color="mintcream", strength=#+15)> Lira Lindriel - - - - - - - Magic is real - unless defined integer!

Backyard Discussions ~x~ Lira's Duchy ~x~ My poems, stories and tags

That's really what the pawn shop items are all about <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> . I really don't see how those dead ends do anything to improve the game.

Dead Ends

#39 Post by Aeon » Sun Dec 15, 2002 12:30 am

I don't know if anyone shares my opinion, but I think the general rule to follow in adventure games is that there should ALWAYS be a way for the player to solve the current situation. Unless they happen to have saved during a death scene, which is just too bad for them. It's much more satisfying when you encounter a stage of the game where you think you're in big trouble, only to stumble over a perfect solution to your problem that was right in front of you the whole time.

You might get less points than you would for the "ideal" solution, but hey, whatever works, right? As long as SOMETHING works!

That is a good idea. There are places in KQ2VGA where you can't get the best solution always, but there is (almost) always at least some way to solve the current puzzle.

True!

Or if you can't solve the problem anymore because you lack something, at least it should be pretty obvious what it is you are missing. If you find yourself in the dark suddenly and know that you could have taken a tinderbox instead of the nightingale, at least it is obvious.

But at the end of the long way if you lack the skeleton key, how could you have known to play the bones?

<td nowrap style=filter:glow(color="mintcream", strength=#+15)> Lira Lindriel - - - - - - - Magic is real - unless defined integer!

Backyard Discussions ~x~ Lira's Duchy ~x~ My poems, stories and tags

A dead end where you know what you should have done is still not much better than a dead end where you don't know this <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> .

I'd note that QfG2 is very good in terms of dead ends. When I was playing it as thief, I went to Rasier several times because I had forgotten oil and the pin and had given away all my money. I did eventually have all three items when I went to Rasier, but none of them is actually needed. It's good that it doesn't actually hurt you when you forget things <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> .

Really, Alexander? I never noticed those! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o"> But I didn't play the thief much - and when I played him, I had to look at a walkthrough anyway. I have never played KQ8, so I don't have an opinion there. I've only played through KQ2+ twice, so I'm going to withhold "ranking" on that one since I just don't have enough basis for judgement yet. As for the others, based mainly on how often I find myself replaying them...

KQ6 is definitely my all-time favourite. The graphics are lovely for the resolution and colour depth that they are. I liked the setting and storyline and the particular mythical elements woven into it.

KQ7's interface took a little getting used to - I still think it's too simple - and its visual style annoyed me. (Humour definitely has its place in the KQ series but I thought this was a bit over the top for silliness.) However, I was absolutely delighted with the feature that allowed you to instantly undo your last action if it resulted in your death. I am often somewhat tense when playing adventure games, because I don't know just how much I have actually accomplished (and thus would stand to lose if I didn't save often enough) - to counteract this I generally save too often, which gives me a feeling of being "fragile", or on the edge of death on every screen. KQ7's instant-undo thing made that feeling totally evaporate, and really freed me up to try whatever the heck I wanted to try without being afraid of the consequences. I was actually playing instead of constantly preparing for disaster.

KQ4 has a place of nostalgia in my heart as the first King's Quest game I ever played when I was just getting into this sort of computer games (that 486 was sooo hot in 1991! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> ). I also think its graphics are impressive for what they are, too.

KQ5 has its tedious and annoying bits (nnyurgh, that rotating maze! I'm so glad they didn't do that again in KQ6) and I dislike its fairly strict linearity - there seems to me to be pretty much one path through the game, you're funnelled from one place to the next without much freedom, and can't go backwards or just wander around much. I still play it from time to time though.

KQ1 is a lightweight in terms of storyline and has a sort of patchwork feel to it (I won't even go into the graphics - I don't think it's fair to comment on the graphics and sound in the original KQ1/2/3 anymore), but then, considering the disk space it had to originally fit in, I don't think we can fault Roberta much. I actually enjoy the fact that I can play through it quickly because there's not much to it.

KQ3 is first a game of too many repetitions of the same thing -- go down mountain, get ingredients, go back, perform spells exactly perfectly - and all of this under duress of a time limit (at least they had a clock to show you exactly what it was, rahter than leave you wondering) -- and then suddenly takes a fairly bizarre turn at the end. It makes sense ok in the overall story arc, but standalone, I just don't find it very enjoyable. Plus it has the "beanstalk factor" in several places, where you must take careful footsteps or die. (Possibly where I picked up my habit of saving way too many times, come to think of it)

KQ2 has all the worst features of the King's Quest games: illogical "best" solutions to problems (throwing a bridle on a snake??), tedious repeated manual-dexterity tasks (crossing the bridge), a storyline that seems even more piecemeal than KQ1, wandering monsters that can kill you without warning. It's definitely the weakest of the lot and I almost never replay it.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... Kijyata at: 1/7/03 9:13:04 am

KQ6 was the first one I played...LOVED IT.
KQ5 is a close second...sometimes I love the length of the game b/c that means more adventuring.
KQ3 & 4 tie...I love the spells in KQ3. My sister and I had a fit when our KQ3 stopped working (anytime we tried to install it-the mouse driver is what installed <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|"> )
KQ7-although it was cartoony and the women were scared of EVERYTHING, I kinda like the story line.
KQ1 & 2 because they're older and don't have much of a plot...although Tierra's KQ2 is definately up there in my top 3 favorites.
KQ 8--I HATE this game w/o the cheats! I hate any type of game where you have to kill to get past the level (at least killing to the degree KQ8 goes to). With the cheats, it's more fun b/c you can be attacked from all sides and be fine, you only have to remember to take it off the god mode before you get that last piece of armor or it will kick you out! (trust me, I know...then was stupid and started the game over instead of taking off the god mode)

Well, ya'll now have my list of my favs to my least favs.

Cat
