NP, the Japanese launch of the PSP is on the 12th December so lets just see the difference between launches!!
For the DS launch shop assistants had signs up saying that they had enough stock for people who had not preordered the DS, I doubt anyone who hasnt preordered the PSP will be getting one at launch.
Anyway Brooms, shouldnt you be getting your Smackdown Vs Raw ass online first before we try to settle this score??

You can say what you want, but I still think 500.000 sold in one week in the USA and 230.000 sold in one DAY in Japan bodes well for the DS.
There's a reason why Nintendo has had a virtual monopoly on the handheld market for so many years.
And by the way, I suggest you re-read that IGN article, Angelus. Specifically this part:

I rest my case. Wait for the weekly sales to be tallied. So is the quiet launch an indication that Japanese game fans just not interested in this latest Nintendo hardware? That may not necessarily be the case. (...) Combine the cold with the fact that it's a standard business day, and it isn't too hard to understand why only the hardcore game nuts would line up for the system, especially if they'd pre-ordered via Nintendo's well organized pre-order program.

Oh no, not by a longshot. It's just, on 2D is doesn't come out that well, I mean, screenshots and such. But the 3D effects are amazing I think. And, it caught me by surprise, like Zelda games do. Also, this game has some impressive scenes which shows the quality cellshading can give, like the Tower of Gods rising up from the sea, or Ganon and the big bird in the Forsaken Fortress.

I just found proof that you can't judge popularity in Japan by the attendance reported by IGN for Dragon Quest VIII and DS.
As you can see here, Dragon Quest VIII sold 167,072 copies in the first week of sales.
On the other hand, Nintendo DS (as mentioned above) sold 230,000 in the first DAY of sales.

They werent going by number of sales, they were just reporting what they had seen, 100s of people lining up for DQVIII and hardly any (about 20 they said) for DS.
Also the PSP has already SOLD OUT so we'll have to see how many sales that it, but I think Nintendo just annouced they have reached 500,000 DS sales!!

"Consumers have voted the Nintendo DS as the hot item this holiday, so if you see one, you'd better buy it," says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "Nintendo owns the hand-held market, and once again we're the hit of the holiday season."
Not to mention they sold 800,000 GBA SPs through thanksgivingperiod, which is another ultimate record.

Sony will only have 200,000 units available for the Japan launch, though the propaganda-like marketingcampaign will be HUGE, and shipping figures suggest that there will be only 100,000 available at launch. This is Sony's typical marketing ploy. They did this for every system. They make around 10% of the systems they plan to sell at launch to create hysteria.
It will be a must-have-thing, and especially in Japan that's a fad.
Well I understand they want mass-hysteria to sell more, but 200,000 or 100,000 is really rediculously low. It should be somewhere around 500,000. So, when Sony sells a console out at launch, it isn't really surprising, cause that's how they market it.

What shipping figures do you have?Spikey wrote:I'm sorry, Angelus, the demand is much higher than 200,000 in Japan. It's really really really low. Shipping figures suggest only 100,000 available in Japan at launch. That's even lower. This is done on purpose, they could have handled higher shippingrates easily.
What do you mean the demand is higher than 200,000? Of course it is its sold out already!
According to IGN they're shipping 200,000 on the first day and plan to ship 100,000 a week reaching 500,000 by New Years.
Whereas DS had 500,000 at launch we'll have to see what the sales are like when the reports come in.
Obviously with supplies like that the DS may sell more initially but what I said (and I said quote me on it) is that I think the PSP will stomp over the DS, and to find that out we'll need to wait until sales figures come in for both systems.
Plus the PSP isnt even out in the US yet :hat

Just got Prince of Persia 2 and Killzone!! Both have amazing graphics and stunning presentation!! Killzone looks like a movie!!
I've only played 5 mins of each but I'm hooked!
In other PS2 news, I bought a 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax9 for my PS2, fitted it and have been installing some of my games like Silent Hill 4, San Andreas and also Killzone and PoP2. Its really cool not having to search around for game discs and the mega reduced load times (as a result of loading from the HD instead of the disc) is uber-sweet!!!
I recommend it!!!

I was talking solely about Japan. The demand is much higher than 200,000 there, and insiders who try to stock up for the PSP in Japan (some large companies look into the possibilities of stocking) tell they are worried about the shippingrates, and seem to be convinced that's it's going to be only a lousy 100,000. It doesn't really matter, Sony says it's going to be 200,000 which is FAR too little for the demand in Japan.
What handheld consoles concerned, like I said earlier, don't forget the 800,000 GBA's sold through thanksgiving. DS is not going to replace the GBA.
I got Warrior Within for my Cube. It's so very different!!!! I like it.

That is true Spikey, although I mainly dont mind old adventure games as there arent any new ones.Spikey wrote:I'd rather not play such a crappy game at all.
PLUS: it's not all about graphics at all. Else you wouldn't play 2D adventuregames nor own a Playstation II.
And I would hardly call the PS2 graphics bad, I wouldnt really call the DS graphics bad but looking at those screenshots after playing PSP Ridge Racers I dont think I could be bothered to play Ridge Racer DS.
But the DS does have some cool looking games on the way and that Pico chat thing looks awesome!!
And, you won't be able to play old Sierra AGI games on a PSP (probably not at least.)

I don't see why this wouldn't run on the DS.
Also, I remember on a forum Brian Provinciano being asked if he would release an SCI interpreter for the GBA. He said no, but only because the screen resolution was too low.
Who knows? We may someday be able to run VGA Sierra games on a DS, using the little touchscreen for a mouse.

Nah, you're right, I was kidding about the PS2 ;) . Though it's supposed to be the weakest of the three, I never noticed any real difference. And because of the different development modes developers don't look enough into on the Gamecube, many multiplatform games actually look much better on PS2 (like X-men Legends, I think).Angelus3K wrote:That is true Spikey, although I mainly dont mind old adventure games as there arent any new ones.Spikey wrote:I'd rather not play such a crappy game at all.

Bromios.
Brainiac.
Other people.
I just got into the most annoying and pointless n00bie discussion ever. So maybe you can help me out. I was talking to some people, who claimed that the Metroid Primes are no FPS. That, because of the Morphball Mode and lock-on.
Well, I think it's FPS, because most of the time you're in firstperson, shooting enemies, trying to stay alive by avoiding getting hit by enemy attacks and solving the "puzzles" to get further. You collect power-ups, new weapons and new visors. Also, the morphball mode and (like three noticeble sequences of) platformaction elements are just not enough to pull the game out of the genre. Plus, Nintendo calls these games "first person shooter".
I don't think that lock-on has anything to do with a game being categorised as non-FPS. It's just the "technology of Samus her suit", a feature of the game. Plus, the Halflife 1 series have auto-aim.
And not like I really care, just want to know what y'all think.
