Windows Vista launches late 2006.

The next version of Windows is finally (nearly) here.

Obviously people will flame it but you know and I know they will end up using it.

longhorn was their beta version. i already have my official copy of windows Xp professional x64. naturally though it only works with a 64bit system. so far it runs great on my dual amd opteron 64 system.

Longhorn was the codename for Windows Vista.

Windows Vista is still in the beta stage. Windows XP 64bit is something totally different, its basically Windows XP with limited driver support for 64bit apps.

ahhh i see. umm. ive just read thorugh all that microsoft has to say about it and it doesnt say if its 64bit or 32bit. if its 32 then whats its point. next year everyone will be running a 64bit machine more or less.

Its 32bit and 64bit.

I think more realistically it will take upto 5 years to get everyone on 64bit.

Not everyone can afford 64bit systems.  :)

I'm very glad they didn't use that name because it sounded like some kind of viking.

Just like Windows 95 was originally named Chicago ;)

To Microsoft,

Seriously, what the hell? Stop releasing software please.

I just hope that the dos support doesn't get any worse (although I can't see how it could possibly get worse after xp).

I'm still trying to figure out why they really wanted to push forward on a technology that was affectionately referred to as "Nice Try." Maybe it's a grudge against the consumer?

I'm pretty sure Vista has NO support for 16bit applications and below which means NO DOS SUPPORT!!

There may be some kind of emulation or compatabilty mode but I'd doubt it, best keep Win98/XP on a seperate partition.

Also Microsoft have announced that they will release Halo 2 on PC but Windows Vista is REQUIRED to play it...

As I understand it, the 64-bit versions of XP are like this, while the 32-bit versions still contain the 16-subsystem emulator. I imagine it'll be the same with Vista, ultimately ending with 16-bit being completely phased out by the time the version AFTER Vista is released (because I don't think they'll keep making 32-bit versions).

Of course, they might have ported the 16-bit emulator to 64-bit systems by then, but I kinda doubt it.

And that's why I'm never letting go of my old HP Pavilion with Windows 95...I just wish I hadn't given away my old 486. :(

I've been running Windows 98 with a 500 Mghz processor for about 6 years now. I doubt that I'll be switching to Vista unless my PC suddenly crashes.

That's so stupid. I hate Microsoft so much...If I wasn't so used to DOS and Windows and not liking the MAC interface, I'd be a MACer.

Right now I have 2 computers. A 2.5ghz with XP SP2 which I use most often for my music and newer games, and a 266 Celeron with Win98SE which I use for all my old games. When games are too fast on my 266 I use DosBox on my 2.5ghz. I also have an old 386 Toshiba Laptop with like a 40mb HD. I really want to get a hold of a 486 DX/4 100, though. I remember way back I used to have one. But I traded it for a little 486 DX/2 66 with PCI slots and then traded that for the 266 Celeron I had now. I was desperate to play newer action games at the time, though, and my computer was too slow :(. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find one sometime down the road. I still have the disks for Win 3.1 and Dos 6 for whenever I do.

Dos box should work under xp64bit editon since its backwards compatible with 32bit applications.  Vista Might have a compatablity wizard will have xp as an option.
