After all the work, will KQ IV return?

Hi there :)

I would like to know, after all your hard (and FABULOUS) work with, KQ I, KQ II, and (maybe) KQ III, will it be anywhere possible to see KQ IV in all Tierra's 256 color splendor? I know it might take a few years, but KQ IV was my ALL time favourite!! :) :)

Anyway,
Thanks,
Ze Ozer Wone

We have no plans for remaking KQ4 right now. It may or may not be a possibility in the future, but right now we really can't promise anything.

(did that sound horribly Sierra customer support-like, or what?)

I think it is a possibility, but it will take a while. There's still other things that have to be done before doing anything towards a KQ4VGA:

1. King's Quest II VGA (in progress)
2. King's Quest I VGA Ver. 3.0 (in progress)
3. Quest for Glory II VGA (in progress)
4. King's Quest III VGA

And that's just with Tierra finishing what they've already started and then heading straight to getting all of the KQ series VGA'd. Other stuff that could happen are newer releases of KQ2/QG2, a voice pack, and the remake of another Sierra game.

Either way, it's going to take a while the way I see it.

"Will it be anywhere possible to see KQ IV in all Tierra's 256 color splendor" - they use 16 million hi-colour, not 256 colours.

So one question! I cant sit down and read through that long "Future Remake" fourm so, did you guys decide on making KQ3 instead of SQ2? Or is that just the rumour?

SQ2 is indeed dropped and we're still not 100% sure what game will take its place. That's something to worry about once KQ2+ is finished and released.

Kings Quest 4 would take forever to remake, that game was huge.

Is KQ3 then a future project? I'd LOVE to see a remake, that was my favorite KQ game apart from 6. I love the whole premise of the game, where you must hide most of your actions from Manannan...

Offhand, 16-bit colour is 65 536 colours, not millions. That's 32-bit colour. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

(rather, 16 million is 24-bit colour. 32-bit appears to be billions *swoon*)

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... kunaito at: 2/15/03 4:22:33 pm

Hmmm...

There are only the 16,777,216 colours (i.e. 24 bits) possible, though. I think the extra 8 bits of 32 are used for alpha or something. *shrugs*.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... >adeyke at: 2/15/03 4:38:09 pm

According to whatis.com:
Quote:
True color is the specification of the color of a pixel on a display screen using a 24-bit value, which allows the possibility of up to 16,777,216 possible colors...

The number of bits used to define a pixel's color shade is its bit-depth. True color is sometimes known as 24-bit color. Some new color display systems offer a 32-bit color mode. The extra byte, called the alpha channel, is used for control and special effects information.

And from webopedia.com:
Quote:

In graphics, a portion of each pixel's data that is reserved for transparency information. 32-bit graphics systems contain four channels -- three 8-bit channels for red, green, and blue (RGB) and one 8-bit alpha channel. The alpha channel is really a mask -- it specifies how the pixel's colors should be merged with another pixel when the two are overlaid, one on top of the other.

Typically, you wouldn't define the alpha channel on a pixel-by-pixel basis, but rather per object. Different parts of the object would have different levels of transparency depending on how much you wanted the background to show through. This allows you to create rectangular objects that appear as if they are irregular in shape -- you define the rectangular edges as transparent so that the background shows through. This is especially important for animation, where the background changes from one frame to the next.

Rendering overlapping objects that include an alpha value is called alpha blending.

So, there you have it.

Don't go out the same way you did the last time
You'll break when you fall
Don't make the same mistakes you did all over
You've got to believe in yourself this time

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... athoth8 at: 2/15/03 5:00:32 pm

KQ4 is planned to be remade by the SpongeFactory. One of the member on these forums(MuzlakOofmay) is apart of the team.
The Knight

Of course it would be free.. you can't sell something that isn't your property to sell.. seems to me MuzlakOofmay has kept pretty hush hush on this project, so I'm not sure if he plans to post it for download when it's finished or not. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

Muzlak, MusicallyInspired, and I were working on a KQ3 remake. You are right... it got cancelled. However, Muzlak still plans on *cough cough* KQ4 sometime in the future. He has much to do before he even thinks about starting it, so that's why he's keeping so hush hush. He just doesn't want to get everyone excited about something that is probably years away from being released...

"Without the fleet, the contest would be on our home grounds, and war is one contest in which it is best to be on the visiting team." -ADM Nimitz

Sponge Factory

The project that was terminated was (I think) Arean's Wish, which is an RPG that Sponge Factory (Muzlak) was making. I know he said that a bunch of his project team members went MIA so either the project is on hold until he either finds replacements or gets the time to do it all himself or it was cancelled altogether.

~Wolfgang

Actually, Arean's Wish isn't cancelled. It's just on hold until he finds an author to help him with the plot. As you said, most of his team went MIA. Too bad... it was looking like a good game! Hope he finds someone soon!

"Without the fleet, the contest would be on our home grounds, and war is one contest in which it is best to be on the visiting team." -ADM Nimitz

It was looking to be a good game. But has said, when your team goes MIA. It dosen't help with the production at all. Imagine if AGD1 went MIA?!
The Knight

Hahah. That would really stink. Fortunately, AGD2 is a talented artist as well. They both worked on KQ2 artwork, and hey, that turned out darn awesome, to say the least.

----------
Sponge Factory
