-Voices being drowned out by music-
I have downloaded Kings Quest VGA 2.0 and the speech pak and installed them into a new directory. There is a huge problem with the speech pak as the voices in the game are being drowned out by the music. For example, in the Intro scene there are times that the music gets into its high notes that I can barely hear the voices at all. As there is a slider bar for sound and music I wish that there was a slider bar for the voices as well. The voices need to be raised higher than they are now. This is especially important in the introduction scene where you can't control the volume of the sound and music and thus the voice needs to be louder. As you start in the intro scene you can hear some of what Graham is saying but it is not clear and loud enough. When you get to speak with the King and the music gets into its high notes, there you will see what I mean about the voices being drowned out by the music. I remember hearing some sample clips of Graham at the justadventure site for the features articles but it seems as if some of what I heard in the game needs to be cleaned up somewhat. Notice the difference between the guards voices and then Grahams. Grahams voice sounds like it is faraway and not as cleaned up as the guards at the gate. I hope this helps, but making the voices louder and clearer, cleaning up Grahams voice clips and adding a voice slider will really help this voice pak. Overall, I am impressed with the voice pak and hope this has helped.

What kind of sound card do you have? We're aware of this problem, but there's not much we can do about it. Each individual sound card uses different volume settings under Windows, which is a real pain. And AGS currently has no ability to individually alter speech volume. I tested the voice pack on 3 very different computers and had no problems with any of them. AGD1 tested the voice pack on 2 computers and had this problem one one of her systems.

You should be able to make the music quieter by double clicking the speaker icon in your windows system tray (at the very bottom-right of the screen on the taskbar), and then adjusting the individual settings of the WAV and MIDI Volume sliders, before running the game. You may need to experiment with the settings a bit, but it should help.

Hi Mandaren! I also had a similar problem on my picky computer, and as AGD2 has said, I solved most of the problem by playing with the sound settings in windows.

I found that the biggest change actually came when I played with the Wave-Table and Line-In settings, as well as the Volume Control and Wave settings. Eventually, it got to a point where the voices were just about perfect, but it took me a bit to perfect it.

What I recommend, is you start the intro of the game up, and then click Alt+Tab to take you back to windows. Change some settings, then go back into the game and see if it helped. Keep toying around with the settings like this until they have a good music/voice ratio in the intro, and then you can rest assured that the voices will sound good in the rest of the game as well.

Hope this helps!

Anonymous Game Developer #1

Or instead of ALT + TABBING, you could just run the game temporarily in windowed mode while you adjust the volume controls. It might be easier that way.

Thank you all. I will try all of the above tips to see if it works. Have a nice day!

I adjusted the volume levels and now I can hear the voices very clearly. I had thought of this myself actually but did not think that it would help as I have experienced this problem in other games where this method did not work. This method worked and now I am hearing the beautiful voices in the game. Very impressive work that Josh Mandel and the other voice actors did in this game, as the voices exude much emotion and feeling in them.

Have a wonderful week!
