Problem with Colors on KQ1VGA
Posted: Tue Jun 18, 2002 7:21 pm

Hi,
I've searched around for this problem in the FAQs and in these forums but I couldn't find anything on it. I wonder if I'm the only one having this problem?
When I run KQ1VGA the colors come out completely wrong. It almost looks as though they are reversed from what they should be or something. I've installed everything and am running the latest version of DirectX
Does anyone have any ideas as to why the colors would be so badly off and what I should do to fix it?
Thanks,
Chris

Hmmmm...never heard of it before. Have you tried fiddling with the color modes? (right-click on desktop, properties, settings) I'm not sure what color mode you're using, try 16-bit color mode.

<img src="

I have actually had one other report of this problem, and would like to get to the bottom of it. If you wouldn't mind a bit of testing, please mail me at
dosuser@bigfoot.com. Thanks.

My brother is much more computer literate then I so I will have him help me this weekend. If I can find what I have wrong on my computer I will email you.

I installed the game on my computer at work and my brother's home computer and it worked fine on both. They were both installed from the same version I downloaded so it's obviously something wrong with my home computer. If I can figure it out I'll let you know so anyone wlse with the problem can get it fixed.

I think the problem is that 99% of graphics cards do hi-color in RGB order, but 1% of cards do it BGR... since AGS just assumes RGB, it's causing inversion of the colours. What graphics card do you have?

When you have time, could you download the SQ2VGA demo that was posted in the Tierra General forum, which uses the updated engine, and see if that looks ok for you?

Cheers,
Chris

Hi,
Thanks for all the comments. The problem is something to do with my computer. I'm not too worried about it because I'm buying a new one next month. I played through KQ1 on another computer and it works great. I never could get it to run on my computer... that's what I get for buying the cheapest piece of crap I could find.

I'll download the SQ2 demo tonight and let you know how it looks on my machine.

I just tried the SQ2 demo. Sure enough the colors are reversed of what they should be. Damn my computer drives me nuts... as I said before I never should have bought the cheapest thing I could find. I'm having this problem with other games too so it's not just you guys.

I've found someone else with the problem and we've traced the problem to some graphics cards which say that they support 16-bit, when in fact they don't and treat it as 15-bit... this loss of 1 bit of colour skews everything and makes it look wrong.

I'm afraid it's not viable to fix, but newer versions of AGS will warn you about the problem.

i tried to look at the advanced settings, in color management. there are a lot of color profiles you can choose between, and i think that it is probably connected to this problem. as i don't know anything about this stuff i prefer not to touch it without some advice.

If you select a new color setting, the OS will change to that color mode for 15 seconds. If no key is pressed, the settings will be reset. So if you get a black screen, just wait until things fix themselves.

<img src="

I'm the other guy with the same problem.

Make a batchfile that has "kq1vga.exe --15bit" in it. That's probably a very unsupported thing to do, but it worked for me with kq1vga and kq2vga.

Oh yeah...
