Video doesn't work

The rest of the game runs just fine, but whenever there's a video sequence (the Tierra logo for example), I can hear music but I can't see anything! I'm running Windows XP with the latest DirectX drivers. Does anybody know what could be going wrong? Oh...If it matters, the video worked just fine in KQ1VGA (still does...I just checked).

Are you using DirectX 8.1, or DX9 beta? I had a report of this problem from someone else with DX9, so that's a possible cause.

Nope, I'm using 8.1. I didn't even know there was a new beta. Thanks anyway. Any other ideas?

It must be caused by some sort of incompatible codec which you have installed on the system which is trying to play the movie files. I can tell you how to view the videos in windows media player (if the AGD's agree), but it obviously won't be the same experience as actually seeing them in the right places in the intro.

Hmmm....I was afraid of that. I don't suppose there's any way to find what video codecs I have on my system. Or, for that matter, what codec KQ2VGA is trying to use to play the videos?

Now this is odd...

I just figured out how to play the video files in Windows Media Player...and they worked just fine. So it seems my computer can play them, it just doesn't want to. Does anybody know a way to possibly fix this?

How did you make them work by the way? The problem I think this is caused by, is having a video codec installed which has registered the ".seq" extension for its own use, and so it tries to play the files instead of the default windows codec. Did you have to rename the files to get them to work in media player?

Yep, I renamed the files and they worked fine. I guess that would make a difference...Any idea how to find out what codec is playing the .seq files?

Thanks for all the help by the way.

The way to make sure, is to leave them as .seq files, open media player, and drag the "2.seq" file into media player. It should give a blank (or purple) image, like you get in the game.

The problem here is that Tierra chose an unfortunate file extension for the video files, which works fine for most people, but for the few people who have this "seq" codec installed, it is trying to play the files and failing.

A fix for you: I'm not sure what codec it is - sorry, I can't really help.

A fix for Tierra if there is a KQ2VGA v2.0 at some stage - rename the files to "1.kqvid", "2.kqvid" and so on or any extension that is quite unlikely to be used by anything else <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Well, thanks anyway. The game's incredible with or without the video...so it's really a minor issue. But it would be nice if somebody looked into fixing this in the future.

If the problem is as dosuser describes I'm sure the AGDs will take his suggestion for the next release. After all, the video bits aren't half as exciting without Tom's music!
