Did this game in PSHE today, quite fun but bloody hard.

You have to work out what the letters mean in the following phrases, such as 24 H in a D would be 24 hours in a day. 52 W in a Y would be 52 weeks in a year. Got it?

Here is a list of 33 phrases which need to be solved. According to MENSA, if you get 23 of these (without cheating or having already seen this) you are a genius. Only 2 MENSA members recieved full marks, let's see how well you do.

btw, many of those are next to impossible for non-native speakers.

Oh, and Spikey's right; Meer should have gotten the chromosome one.  Forshame!  You have disappointed you fellow follower of genetics!  Seriously though, you'd be surprised how quickly you can forget obvious things when doing puzzles or tests like this...

Oh, and one more thing; I find it highly amusing that a post about mind games contains a spelling error (crypTic).  Do I get extra MENSA genius points for finding that?

I only read a short part of the list, so, yes, I overlooked the 23 C in the HB

But when there are examples like "13 S in the USF" or "39 B of the OT" or  "3 B M (SHTR)" or "15 P in a RT", it sounds more like a Trivial Pursuit test than a MENSA test to me...
Should we have another discussion on intelligence and intelligence tests, Spikey?

P.S. One I expected to see was 88 C in the S, but it wasn't there

BTW, an X by itself means I haven't a clue. For two of them, however, I either wasn't entirely sure that my answer was correct or my answer was incomplete.

I don't know that this test really measures intelligence that well. General knowledge maybe, but it seems like the test puts people from certain countries at an unfair advantage. I mean, why should someone from Japan have to know that there are 11 players on an American Football team, for example. Anyway, I have no idea if my guess of "Three Blind Mice" is even remotely close to the answer, and I'm also not entirely sure that there are 15 players in a Rugby team. It sounds about right, and I can't imagine what else those letters could stand for. I'm also not really sure why I knew there were 9 provinces in South Africa (if that's indeed the correct answer). I must have learned that somewhere, and I just now pulled it out of the dark recesses of my memory. I think the hardest one that I actually did get was the Chromosome one. It finally dawned on me only right before had decided to give up. And I didn't think I'd ever remember anything from high school biology!  :rolleyes

I would rather let the others try to guess it first, before I reveal what it is.
Should not be that hard, definitely easier than the 15 P in a RT

I just checked my answers with what you guys have filled in so far, and it looks like I got 26 right! Wow, WTF is up with me? I'm really not that smart at all, lol! I think a lot of it has to do with simple luck though; I just happened to know a bit about the topics that were covered in it. There are a lot of people who know zilch about the Bible, which by itself makes 3 of the puzzles in this test already impossible, but that hardly means they're any less knowledgeable about things in general. There are probably many different examples of this kind of test that I wouldn't do nearly so well on.

Anyway, here's what I didn't know:

12. 3 B M (SHTR) X -three Blind Mice (See How They Run!)
-I do now vaguely remember that "See How They Run!" chant, but there's no way I would have gotten that on my own.

16. 100 C in a R -one hundred Cents in a Rand
-Okay, I knew there were 9 provinces in South Africa, but I'm not too current on my foreign currencies. Sorry, bad pun! No way I could have got that.

19. 13=UFS -thirteen is Unlucky For Some
-This one is just way too obscure. I did think about the significance of thirteen as a lucky/unlucky number, but I'd never have figured out the stupid little phrase. Once again, wasn't a chance for me.

20. 8 T on a O -eight Tentacles on an Octapus
-I might have figured this one out eventually. I actually was thinking that the number 8 could be the amount of some appendage/organ a particular animal has, but I never thought of 'tentacle'. Not very many animals have tentacles, after all.

24. 13 L in B D -thirteen Loaves in a Baker's Dozen
-Doh! I should have known that one, dangit!

31. 6 B to an O in C -six Balls to an Over in Cricket
-Don't know anything about Cricket, so I was pretty much dead in the water on this one.

33. 15 M on a DMC -fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest
-Gar! I have heard that saying before of course, but I never would have guessed it. What the heck is it supposed to mean anyways?
