I've been playing them since Wolfenstein along with Space Quest and King's Quest. Don't get me wrong, adventures are surely better. But there was always a place for FPS in my book as long as they were good. I didn't like Doom, but Duke3D was great fun. When Half Life came out I thought it had the best story of them all. Not a no-brainer shoot-em-up, but with an actual story with actual character in reasonably realistic situations and drama.
I would have given up on them since Unreal went the way of the multiplayer tournament crap, but Half-Life renewed my hope that they won't go completely down the tubes. I didn't like Halo very much, though. Interesting concept for a story, but too strategic and militaristic and shoot-the-baddies-esque and not enough free-exploring-like (or at least the illusion of exploring) for me.

MI & Erpy> Did you play it on hard? I always play my games on hard, gives a great challenge. I love the gravity gun you get in the game and when it obsorbs the energy from the somputer system then becomes blue and then you can kill people and pick up anything you want. Man this game truly rules.
I think the G-Man must have some sort of power because he was the one who took over the planet Zen in HL1, because he seems to be able to stop time. HL3 will truly be amazing.
Dont you just love the engine?
