The most amazing thing ever................... Google Earth!

#1 Post by Angelus3K » Sat Jul 30, 2005 10:24 am

I'm sure some of you have already seen this but its incredible!

http://earth.google.com/

Its a program you download and install and it basically has a 3D earth which you can actually go anywhere on Earth and see everything! I mean you can zoom down to the Grand Canyon, swing round to London and see Nelson's Column.

The pictures must have been taken by satalite and planes etc but its so well put together!

I'm gonna checkout Erpy and Navy's addresses right now lol!

This is pretty similar to http://maps.google.com . This is a bit more featured, but functionally, it looks pretty much the same.

I noticed that you can zoom in quite a bit closer in America than in Europe... Wallsend is pretty blurry.

it's nifty, but, it's not too good with small towns.  i tried to look up where i lived in WV, and all i got were coloured lines of the roads - no buildings or anything.

I know what you mean Steffi, alot of smaller places dont have close up photos.

I expect that one day the whole of the earth will have a close up shot so Google Earth will be complete by then!!

Yeah, if I'm not mistaken it was Google Earth BETA? Google is the only company I don't mind taking over every aspect of the internet, they rule anyway.

Fantastic

#11 Post by Gronagor » Mon Aug 01, 2005 1:06 pm

This IS fantastic. :) Just think how great this will be if Google could get sattelite updates every hour or so!

Can already see Pres Bush misusing this... checking in to find weapons of mass destruction.  :p

edit1: I can make out my house, but it doesn't zoom in as far as in the US. Incredible!

edit2: For some reason they've placed another town's name precisely in the middle of our city. Weird.  :p

Where this technology is going: very scary!

Hey Gron,

I did a search for

26.1674431161, 29.1006439157

and

29.1006439157, 26.1674431161

but it just came up with blank parts of Africa.

This is where we live, do a search for "Hadrian Park, Wallsend, UK" and then you can see the Hadrian Park Chop Suey House, we live down the road from there!

I've just thought, I dont think its a case that the Wallsend area is blurry its just that its a map rather than a photograph. Thats what it looks like anyway  :)

Home @ lat=55.5064958789, lon=9.50307638134. It's quite blurry, though, so you may want to enable the road layer (which, as it happens, was the only way I was able to pinpoint the location).

I don't know where they got Bulfontein... it's a misplacement from them. About 150 km or something. But looking at their road placements I guess it's understandable.

Well... everything which is green around there would be houses. Don't know why it's so blurry.

Pidgeot... I'm checking your house out right now!  :p

hmm.. I like this very much.

How did you save the tour as a movie?  I'd like to do that for you guys..

anyways.. based on the fact the two towers aren't in newyork, i'd say the pictures taken there are newer than 4 years ago.. but according to the shot of my house.. judging by the cars in the driveway: (Firebird, mustang, impala, saturn, my chevy truck, and a gto - most of which were sold several years ago), and the fact the intersection between I-35 and 635 is the old one ( a new one has been under construction for the past 3 years..), not to mention the placement of grass lots over the department stores and retail shopping centers near my apartment..  i'd say the dallas picture has to be about 5 years old.

It's a really cool program!!  (i'm lucky because I live within the confines of Dallas, which has the satellite pictures) but it's still very cool.

Yeah.. in dallas the pictures appear to be summer pics, but zip over to Massachusettes!

See how brown everything looks?  Those have to be Autumn pictures because that state is normally one of the greenest..

shame they one have high res of the north of my island where there really isnt much of anything. plus they have one of our towns, oistings, being slightly inland. oistings is a coastal town primarily around oistings fish market where it gets its name from.

That is absolutely amazing!!!  You guys weren't kidding aobut how close you can zoom in.  It's unfortunate about what you say about the Dallas picture The Avatar, from what it seems the pictures of my area (I live right out near Boston) are of the fall season last year.  The only reason I know this is that the car I can see in our driveway is in the picture and we have only had it for about 1 year now.  Pretty amazing stuff.
