The manual contains info on how to play that's useful, but not mandatory. (except for QFG4, which has a copy protection)
The best sound is probably to use soundblaster for sound effects whenever possible. You can speed up the game by using CTRL-F12 to increase the cycles of Dosbox a few times.

QFG1VGA has occasional palette problems. Saving, quitting and restoring should fix the issue.

Click on the link in Greensenshi's post and get the patches for the QFG-games. It'll make the games a tad more stable. Just put the files in those zip-files in the appropriate folders.

installed patch for the first game
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Arcade/7435/
what about those patches?
And the first one, it doesn't work on cd version of the game?
The colors are fine when i play in a window, but when i alt-enter it for full screen, the colors often get messed up.

If you're talking about official patches, Sierra did release some. What the patches in my post do is fix problems with QFG1VGA, QFG3, and the CD version of QFG4. Those, along with running the games in a program called DosBox, will make them much easier to play.

The collection CD comes with all the latest patches already installed. All you need to do is install New Rising Sun's patches, which fix various speed issues and some poor scripting, and you're all set to go.

Remove the "A:" at the start of the name and simply type in the name you want to save under. It'll be saved in the game folder instead.

When i try to give commands with space bar, is there any way to have it not showing the last command i wrote?
Are there any patches necessary?

No, the EGA games are by far the most stable games in the series. What commands were you trying to give with the spacebar? Because the spacebar and F3 repeat the last typed command and you perform new commands by typing what you want to do.
As for the VGA version, it's coming along pretty well. We're approaching beta stage. The applications will probably close soon.

Have you tried lowering the game speed? It also has an effect on the speed of combat.

How to solve the final room puzzle as a Fighter.
Type "run" to run away from the statue that comes to life. There is one candle that isn't lit; run into it to knock it over. After Ad Avis starts chanting, run around the star to knock over the brazier. It will knock Ad Avis out the window.
Is qfg3 "day triggered" like qfg2(some things happens on certain days), or is it like qfg1 where you can take it as slow as you please?

In QFG3, during the first couple of days, things happen on a schedule. After that, it's event-based. Same with QFG4.

For QFG4, just make sure you sleep in the inn for the first few weeks, otherwise you'll miss an event needed to complete the game. It's a large part of the reason why I have yet to finish game 4.
