Perhaps it is indeed better to either upload it yourself or (if it's not too large) ask someone else to host it. Like Adventurer said, not everyone uses it and it's possible to download infected copies from someone's computer if he has a virus.

I appreciate your suggestions! I will pass them along to the team.

Regarding your concerns, Kazaa Media Desktop has recently been found 100% Legal by U.S. and E.U. courts. BTW, here's a Christmas Bonus for you guys, in light of Erpy's post:

1. Run Antivirus software and keep it updated (even if you don't use P2P software).

2. Backup your computer often. Backup every single file once a year. Maybe during the holidays. Unless you are watching movies on your PC.

3. Never open an attachment from someone you don't know.

4. Get Ad-aware at www.lavasoft.de and please please clean the Spyware of your computer (Intellimail, Hotbar, eChronology)

5. Make a contribution to AGDI's PayPal link. It's here on the main forums page. They have deserved it! If they don't earn a dime - they are the best - what hope do the rest of us have? Searching for your DEMO right now. Maybe I'll upload it to my own webspace, for people who have/like Kazaa.

Being so dependant on other people to distribute your project for you is actually a weakness rather than a strong point from where I'm standing. People usually just take a program out of the shared folder as they install it instead of wasting space by leaving it in. People can screw up things by placing duds (files with the same name but different content) in their shared folder. People will be less likely to try something if they have to install a P2P util first. You don't have any control whatsoever over the distribution. If Sierra were to disagree with the existence of your project after its release and they realize there is no download link for you to take down, they'll skip the cease&desist and go straight to the lawsuit instead when they realize there's nothing you can do to stop the distribution in any way. Those are my arguments in favor of a plain link & uploaded file.

Quote:
BTW, here's a Christmas Bonus for you guys, in light of Erpy's post:

1. Wolfgang is right. It'd be foolish to distribute your entire project over the net, because everyone will be able to modify it as they see fit and you'll lose complete control over the project. The files in the "compiled" folder are all you need to distribute among people. Just zip those files (the exe, the setup, and the 00x-files) into one file and distribute it. But heck, that was what you did with your first demo's, right, so there's no real need for us to tell you all this.

Quote:
I can't comment directly because I represent a team of people.

Yes, but so does every AGDI-member who posts here. I too represent a team of people, but I'll try to comment directly whenever possible and only leave answering to others if the question is out of my area of expertise. Every team has a representative and since you're posting on these boards, I'd say you're in a position to talk on behalf of your team. Especially since you're the project director.

Quote:
The legality of Kazaa is an issue for some people. So I think the difference made was minimal.

Also, you didn't comment on my arguments about P2P making you give up the control over the distribution and the fact that people can hamper your distribution directly by placing bogus-files in their own shared folder.

we understand the usefullness of kazaa and peer2peer.
But in my house i have only 56K so kazaa is almost useless for me, so i have not installed it.Useless from the scope which i cannot share my files, because people
won't download from my slow line.
Kazaa is only useful when i use university's E1 line and i am able to download and let other people upload multiple files at dramatic speads.Imagine an mp3.I get it in 3-4 seconds if i find an E1 line who has the mp3....eeeeeer file .

You want to promote your game and not Kazaa. So the game should be visible to a wide variety of users :
even to the ones who does not use kazaa.

Kazaa, and generally peer 2 peer applications are very famous, and usefull not only for file sharing, but for
video broadcasting (even real time as some designers have envisioned). They do not need CBR game in order
to increase their popularity.I sound like a cynic man
but it is the plain truth.

Of course peer 2 peer potential is fully harnessed in the case where people have lines better
than simple old modulation techniques used in POTS.We are talking about cable, ADSL,and E1/T1 lines. These should be the people who could share files with ease and should use kazaa.

Jodo,

Again, he proves himself (and his "team") to be a joke. Do you enjoying toying with us? I just don't know how to take you seriously. You are not all there, are you? Upstairs, I mean. In the brain..... urgh. You're frustrating, Mr. Jodo Kast. I seriously hope you aren't just messing with us here - that wouldn't be a very kind thing to do, and would almost be like "flaming" on a higher level. Whatever. I couldn't locate your demo on Kazaa.... at all.

Steve

This is AGDI's forum. You are a guest here. You don't make the rules. You don't enforce the rules. You really have no authority whatsoever here, even if you created the thread. Don't try to pretend you do.

Joke: Use MSN and ICQ! Because they have the best file-transfer protocols ever!

Serious: If you insist on distributing the game or demo in an odd way, I suggest IRC. Jodo, I tried to search for your demo using Kazaa Lite K++ as you said above, but I can't find it. Would it be under any other name or something?

As to your comments about the legality of Kazaa, while I agree that there are people who have ethical issues with using it, the simple fact is that it doesn't matter one damn about the US or EU court rulings. I think he already answered why blackthorne could not get the demo he said :
---------------------------------------------------
Quit spamming my threads. Final Warning. I bet than ALL the rest , will not be able to locate the file as well.
You think it is funny? I do not.All this process is boring.

PS : do you think it is normal to use other's team forum
in order to promote your game?it is not reasonable.MAke your own page for your jok...er game.

Like Relight, I'm seeing this one turning into yet another spectacle where people are exchanging low blows.

Jodo, here's my advice. Please take this well.

- People couldn't find it on Kazaa. The reason to me is simple. Assuming that you're the only person who has the file in his shared folder at this moment, people will only be able to obtain your demo when you're online and have Kazaa enabled. Unless you'll find people who're willing to keep it in their shared folder and keep their computer turned on and online all the time, your file will be very hard to get. So please, follow people's advice and just upload it like you did with the other demo's. It'll be for the better. As you can see, P2P isn't nearly as efficient as a distribution method as you assumed.

- Right now we're talking about distribution of a demo. It can't be that big. There's no need to discuss the distribution of the final version yet until the final alpha or beta version is finished. This thread should be about your demo, not about P2P.

- Please don't start with the "my files are only accessible to people who are intelligent"-kind of comments. They're highly inflamatory, will just cause people to take offense and on the whole, you'll be wanting to distribute your work to an audience as broad as possible, not just those you deem worthy. (I mean, there may be plenty of people who don't react to this thread, but are interested in trying out your work) If you stand behind your work, you'll know that it has the potential to change the mind of people who criticise. You're posting about your demo on a public message board. That means EVERYONE should be able to comment on your demo and thus should have access to it. If you just want a limited number of people to comment on it, have this thread closed, contact a select number of people through mail/IM and send them the game while exchanging feedback through mail/IM.

For short: upload the demo to some server while ignoring your own opinions about distribution for a while now. It's for the best. And just wait until people try out and comment on your demo.

Blackthorne and Deltamatrix...you posted that you couldn't locate the file. Fair enough. But that point can be made without launching a direct assault at the thread's creator. I personally find it a bit annoying when I'm taking the time to choose my words carefully, only to see someone else set the place on fire with a few blunt comments. If you want to point things out...go ahead. But do so in a civil manner, if you please.

Edited by: Erpy at: 12/25/03 12:00 pm

Jodo,

I had originally posted some kind of retort/insult here, but I'm not going to do that now. I am not a spammer, nor ever have been. I have only been interested in this game since you announced it, and it has since become a spectacle. I don't know what else to say; you insult me, then whine when I(or others) defend myself against your baseless insults, pointless logic, and questionable methods. I can only infer that you must be somewhat deranged. Perhaps too much time in cyberspace has hurt your logic and reasoning capabilities. Anyways, I will continue to search Kazaa to try and find your demo, as the Colonel's Bequest was one of my personal favorites. I hope it's worth it. I hope I do find it, but it doesn't seem like ANYONE here has found it yet. I do hope we fit the intelligence profile.

Steve

PS.
>> ERPY:- Please don't start with the "my files are only accessible to people who are intelligent"-kind of comments. They're highly inflamatory, will just cause people to take offense and on the whole, you'll be wanting to distribute your work to an audience as broad as possible, not just those you deem worthy.

>> ERPY: Blackthorne and Deltamatrix...you posted that you couldn't locate the file.

Uh, yes - a direct attack on me personally, delivered by Jodo.... only feeling the need to defend myself somewhat. Maintaining civility with Mr. Jodo Kast seems to be an imposibility, as his insipid manor inspires me to a verbal platitude of a somewhat hostile nature. Sorry. I don't want any kind of flame war with him, nor on your boards. I have only ever wanted to be a productive member, who enjoys adventure gaming as much as he enjoys creating them.

S.

Edited by: Blackthorne519 at: 12/25/03 9:24 pm

Jodo, how can you do this to everybody? Especially on Christmas day.

"Requires MCGA, CGA, VGA, PGA, or TA-RA-RA-BOOMGA!!" -Gary Owens, SQ4
Edited by: MusicallyInspired at: 12/26/03 4:30 am

Sorry if you can't find it on Kazaa just yet.

We are looking into alternative distribution methods.

Thank you for your continuing support!

P.S. Someone could setup a free account somewhere and ICQ me the information so I could upload it and you could get it there. Unfortunately there are usually bandwidth limitations. The file is 5MB so free services would allow about 20 people that's about it.

P.S.S. ERPY, when I hinted non-intelligent people can't play my game I mean people who cannot share cannot play my game. If you don't share in the distribution of the file (via BitTorrent or eDonkey or Kazaa), then you have NO RIGHT to ask me to share my files with you. Don't want to let others download the game, then you can't download it (cauze you don't want to install the Client).

This is Christmas and I'm asking you to SHARE your time/resources/ in this case your Connection so that others can play the game. The response I'm getting is you expect me to pay for it or ask people to host it who have better things to do with their time than to respond to my stupid bandwidth request. I don't want to bug people when the systems are already in place to share files.

The power to share files is in your hands with eDonkey Bittorrent and Kazaa but if you don't want to share, guess what, you can't download! No.

It's a lesson you should have learned in kindergarten. Blackthorne... Erpy now has control of this thread (and will soon close it if necessary).

When the demo is released, it will be a large 400 MB almost-CD-Size file so that's what we are concerned about. Your concerns are 'in the present' but we want a smooth release when the game is ready. Unless someone pays for the bandwidth, HERE are the calculations:

10 people download the game? 10 special peeps? times 400MB is 4Gigabytes! The game is high quality so I'll tell you this now; get used to sharing your files otherwise you're absolutely correct, the people with files will LOCK YOUR UNGRATEFULNESS OUT.

In the 'Adult World' I would post it on a Website and force you to pay $49.95 paypal to download the game and play it. But we'll give it away free... assuming it is 100% free.

You have to share your bandwidth for this transaction to proceed. Our game will not be trifled with. There is no alternative to the clients I mention for 1. Unlimited Bandwidth 2. Free.

If you can provide a free unlimited host for our project post here.

Jodo Kast
LBCBR Crew
