The Off-topic AGDI FAQ for newbies

#1 Post by Broomie » Thu Jan 06, 2005 5:28 pm

Okay, I think it's about time someone made a thread like this which pretty much has most of the answers to the most frequently asked questions. Feel free to add your own that you know alot of newbies ask, but here is what I feel are the most asked ones I've seen.

I've searched the AGDI forums for some questions you hear alot. Also adding a few obvious ones that are asked alot.

Most of these are stated quite clearly in the Rules and Reg, but I just toned them down abit.

1. When is {Insert Game here} coming out? There isn't a release date on the site.
Well most of the games that are in development don't bother with a release date, as certain things can happen and you just can't promise that the game will be released on 5th March 2005. So the common answer would be It'll be done when it is done.

2. Can you remake QFG4, KQ5 and 6, SQ4?!1111
The answer is one big fat NO! The whole point of what AGDI and other remakes is to remake them into Sierra's VGA standards. What is the point of remake an already VGA game just for the bugs? Now that's a FAQ for you lot!

3. I am now playing some sierra classics, like QFG 1 and KQ 4, and i am having some problems with sound. I can't hear nothing, no music at all!

Use VDMSound or DOSBox

4. How do you use dosbox???

It's not too hard.  You ought to give it a try.

First, download it and install DOSbox, just like you would with any other Windows program.  Then, start the program through your start menu.  At this point you will be looking at a DOS prompt.

Next, you will need to "mount" a drive, which means to tell DOSbox that it can access a directory on your hard drive as if it had it's own.

I enter the command:

mount c c:\games

"mount" is the system command, the "c" means "this is DOSbox's new C drive," and where I have "c:\games" you would put the directory where you keep your Sierra games.

Next, you will want to go to the folder you have QFG1 in, which will look something like this:

cd QFG1

"cd" means "change directory"

Then you type the name of the executable file, I think "hero.bat" or just "hero" and you're in!!!

If you want a list of all of the files in that directory, type:

dir

And that's it!  There's more to DOSbox if you want to play around, but that's all you need to do to just get QFG to run in DOSbox.  Give it a try, it's worth it.  And I'm sure somebody here would be willing to walk you through any problems with DOSbox, as there are so many people here who use it.[/b]

5. I can't complete QFG4, there's a horrid error at the swamp!!!??  >:  >:

Well bud, don't go crazy because I can solve your problem, there's a downloadable patch which should help you with your problems. Here is the address.

http://geocities.com/belzorash/

6. Look at my wbsyt!!!!111 plz it gets no vizeters!?! here is the link.

Image

7. I own King's Quest 5. I installed it on my computer. (Has windows XP on it) And when i try to run it, it says "Insufficient local memory:36818" Please help!

I assume you're playing the Windows version? If so, you'll need to use the compatability settings to make it play in 640x480 using 256 colors. KQ5's Win interpreter was made for Windows 3.0, which doesn't support other resolutions.

8.  Anyone know where I can download King's Quest and the other Sierra classics?

That my cheap friend is illegal, and will not be discussed. If you really want it goto your local computer shop just incase or my friend eBay can sort you out.

9. Anyone played Quest for Glory 4 1/2, great game!

Although I very much agree ;) AGDI have a thing with the makers of QFG 1/2 so discussion about that won't be tolerated.

10.  Let's have a discussion about religion...

Let's not. Religious debates are something that shouldn't be discussed here. Don't ask me.

Feel free to add more, afterall it's nice to have abit of common sense in these forums, maybe if Erpy sticked this (if he wants I don't really mind)
that'd be good for the newbies. If they read it first that is.

11. I'm tired of being a peasent! How do I change?

Ranks are based on your post count. Here is the break-down:
Peasant Status 0 - 50
Royal Servant Status 51 - 150
Knight Status 151 - 500
Defense Minister Status 501 - 1000
Royal Vizier Status 1001+

12. What about people with custome titles?? How do I get one of those?

We give out custom titles on a case by case basis. You have to be a long time member of the forums who contributes regularly. Remember that quality posts count more than sheer quantity of posts when it comes to custom titles.

13. How do I get a picture under my name? (Avatar)

Pick a picture you want either from a website or on your computer (but the picture has to be hosted on a website) Then goto your profile on here and at the very bottom there is a place to type the URL of the picture you want.

Alternately, you can select an image from one of the two avatar gallerys we have hosted on the forums. You can choose to be virtually any character from either KQ1VGA or KQ2VGA.

16. Hey, how do I get into the chatroom and why is nobody ever in there?

http://www.agdiforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8973

See this thread for more information.

17. How do i host my pictures?????

You need to find a good host which will allow hot linking (Geocities doesn't allow) and upload it to there, if you can't ask someone politely and they may just host it for you. ;)

18. Why won't my picture display?

Because the picture is on your hard drive, not uploaded to a website. You'll need to do that before other people can see it.

If you did indeed upload it to the Web, make sure the address is typed correctly (remember, upper case is not the same as lower case). If you've typed it correctly, it's likely because the website you've linked to doesn't allow hotlinking. You'll need to find a different server, or change/override the configuration.

Your other option would be to install Apache or IIS, but that's beyond the scope of this forum. ;)

19. Who are moderators here?
Navynuke is the forum founder and administrator.
Adeyke and Wolfgang are forum moderators.
Erpy is a forum administrator and an official AGDI communicating-with-fans guy.
AGD1 (aka Milan Easton) and AGD2 are developers themselves.
Broomios moderates our beloved chatroom.
(sorry guys, I got 'em mixed up) :P

20. I want to be a pirate!
You need to go to the SCUMM Bar. Oh, that was just a rant? Then welcome to the Random Rants thread.

Navy and Erpy are administrators, and Adeyke and Wolfgang are the moderators. RIGHT?

Though, Erpy and Navy also do a lot of moderating. Oh, and, not to forget, Broomie moderates the chatroom. So did Vildern and I once, but we kicked all the other moderators out so it was shortlived.  :rolleyes

By the release of QFG2VGA there is a slight possibility my moderation of the chatroom may move onto the moderation of the forums also. ;) Hopefully anyway.

that's so true though. That should be the first thing in this thread. Speaking of which one should be added even though I am the worst offender of this.

21. OMG WH3N W1LL HAX0RS G3T T0 L3T3-LY PWN J00 GUYS!!!

please if you're going to post please at least attempt to make sense. Even though I never do I atleast try and sometimes Angelus will make a post written completly in said jiberish which is funny. Other then these 2 people everyone else should be writing in a legible context all the time

22. HTSDTGDTSGYJUGSDFFHJ ASDFGDE ?

If you are going to post please do it while sober. You may THINK you are making sense but really you aren't so please stay away from our forums if not your computer when under the influence of alcohol (or other things)

23. HOLY F*** YOU BI*** HAVE YOU SEEN THAT F**** NEW S*** THAT CAME OUT? IT'S F***ING WHACK

Although some very small amount of swearing will be let go please try and keep the forum as G rated as possible. usually about 1 minor cuss every hundred post is a bit over the edge. Not only is it a good idea here but everywhere because people tend to think less of you if you talk like a sailor (No offense Navy)[/b]

24.  oh my god like you wouldnt believe it because he said hi and then he said bye so i was watching a movie and ....

in other words, please take the time to try and use something of understandble punctuation and grammar.  I understand if you first language is not English - those mistakes are forgiveable.  However, for the sake of those who are not native English speakers, or even those of us with very little patience for attempting to deciper gibberish, please take the time to use punctuation and avoid run-on sentences.  Thank you.

Alternatively, you can keep a shortcut to DOSBox somewhere you can easily access it and simply drag the executable on top of the shortcut. DOSBox will load, mount the specified directory as C:\, and launch the program (You can also drag a folder, but you'll have to launch the actual executable yourself).

To make things even easier, you can create a shortcut to DOSBox in your computer's SendTo folder (usually C:\WINDOWS\SendTo or C:\Documents and Settings\{profile name}\SendTo - you may need to configure Windows to show hidden files to find this folder). Once that is done, you can launch any program in DOSBox by right-clicking the executable and choosing Send to -> DOSBox. This has the same effect as dragging the executable onto a DOSBox shortcut.

Nope, Open With... is not available for .EXE, .COM, and .BAT.

Nice idea, though. ;)
