In swedish?
Hi everyone.
I just found this amasing project of yours. I haven´t tried the game yet but I will when I have the time and I can get hold of a copy.
I´d love to translate it into swedish. We have some crazy letters though: Å, Ä and Ö
Haven´t read the hole post so I´m not sure if you have any solutions to this yet but I´m willing to give it a go. It will take some time though since I have much to do in april.
//mason

Re: In swedish?
There is no Swedish volunteer yet, so it would be great if you'd take the time (believe me, it costs one hell of a lot of time) to translate the game into your native language.

Unfortunately, AGS doesn't support special characters at this time. We're hoping Chris Jones will find some way to implement custom fonts in a future version of AGS.

But don't let this stop you. Feel free to read this thread, browse the forums and play through the game itself.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashh ...

Swedish translation
I think I´ll try, it would be a fun challenge. If you can email the tranlation file I´ll have a look at it and keep you posted with the progress.
dixon_mason@hotmail.com

//mason

Re: Swedish translation
It seems as none of the AGD's noticed your post yet, but since I too have the template-file (and the info) you need, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't send you what you need.

I just sent it to you, so just check your mail and don't forget to read the instructions.

And thanks for volunteering.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashw ...

Just wanted to say that I am not at home during the weekend, so I will not do any translations until then. But after that I will have *a lot* of time because my social services ended today.

Jan

Re: Translators: Please Read
I don't think we have deadlines here, not for the team, not for the translators. Take your time. (heck the process cost me about 4 to 5 weeks and I expect the beta testing to take 1 or 2 extra weeks as well)

Remember, quality goes first and if that means you need to spend more time on it because you need to think up some nice-sounding lines instead of litteral translated messages, so be it.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

Re: Translators: Please Read
Yep, I did send Mason a file for the swedish translation.

As for the deadlines, just do it when you have time. Version3.0 of KQ1 on't be released for a while yet, so there's plenty of time.

To Latvian
<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> ) I suppose I COULD do a translation to Latvian, but there isn't, exactly, a very large audience to be aimed at, unless the version would be put up somewhere locally for download. . .and we have 'special' fonts too, so that problem would have to be fixed first

Special Characters
OK, I'm back. It's good to hear that 3.0 will not be released for a while. Will it be possible once 3.0 is released to add further translations to it without releasing a 3.1?

But more important: I received an email from LucasFan, a guy who created a German fangame based on Zak McKracken (<a href="http://www25.brinkster.com/lucasfangame ... ) with AGS that became very popular over the last 2 weeks (was even on TV). He found the discussion about special characters in this forum.

LucasFan said that he replaced not used characters in the AGS font with German special characters using the SCI Graphic Studio. Then he replaced the special characters from the script (ä, Ä, ö, Ö, ü, Ü, ß) with the replaced characters (e.g. *, #...). I don't know how many not used characters there are in the AGS font (7 would be needed for the German translation, even more for the French I think) but this could be a solution for some translations, although it can't be applied on greek, russian (and so on) translations.

Latin
I think I could try to do a translation into Latin... although my knowledge of good Latin style is very limited and it would probably interest even less people than the Latvian one.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/umrfx2211.show ... rfx2211 at: 4/1/02 9:13:11 pm

Re: Latin
I'm going to hold off for a little while longer before sending any more translation files out. Version3.0 still has a few bugs, so I'm going to wait till those are all fixed before compiling a slightly newer version of the translation file.

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone that I've sent a translation file to, who hasn't started editing it yet? If you haven't it may be better for you to simply wait until I can send you a new one (should be fairly soon).

As for the additional language characters which they made in the German Zak McKraken 2 game. Yes, this is possible in AGS, but there are not many "unused" characters in the SCI font (the same type that AGS uses) to cover all of the special characters required for each languages. The only real solution that would work (without us having to release seperate 22MB versions of each language version of the game), will be for AGS to support true-type fonts. TTF supports the full range of special symbols for all translated languages.

Re: Latin
@mrfx2211:
I think it would be funny to see a latin version, but nobody in this world speaks latin. Therefore nobody will seriously play this translation. And translating the game is really *a lot* of work. This would only be a waste of time, but thanks for the offer <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> .

@AGCs:
I just started to translate 20-30 lines, so I will wait until you sent the new translation file. Until then I will spend some time with the manual. Erpy was so kind to send me some templates, though I will be able to translate this one too. I already did the introduction last week.

And yes, after a few more mails with LucasFan (The Zak 2 guy) I found it out, too. The AGS font isn't big enough to hold all the characters. Is there a statement of Chris Jones according to TTF-fonts? Does he plan to implement them? Perhaps a easier method to reach the goal is to enlarge the AGS font to 256 (minus 32) characters like the ASCII code. Then there would be plenty of room for special characters although the TTF solution is still the best.

Jan

Re: Latin
Eventually, I think Chris Jones is going to allow the importing of TTF characters which, once imported, will undergo a conversion into a format that's compatible with the one AGS uses.

I also think that there will be some kind of ASCII table coded into AGS, which will automatically replace any ASCII characters found with the appropriate TTF character.

Ok, I'll send you an updated translation file a little later on.

Re: Translators: Please Read
Hi
Please send it to me as well. I´ve started the translation (about 1/20 done <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> ) but I guess that it wont be a problem to cut and paste the translations I´ve already done into the new file.
About the Swedish translation:
Without the special characters å,ä,ö:
I must say that the translation wont be great. I see three options:
1) å,ä,ö will be replaced with a,a,o (This makes a huge difference, and I´m not sure if the game will be a lot enjoyable)
2) å,ä,ö will be replaced with aa,ae,oe (This might be a better solution?)
3) I translate the file but wait with the release until special characters can be implemented.

Please say what you think is best.

Is there´s someone from Sweden (or perhaps Denmark/Norway/Finland) that could comment this as well?

//mason

Re: Translators: Please Read
Ok, I'll send you guys an updated translation file once I have a new one compiled and ready to send out.

Unfortunatley, my computer has totally gone mental tonight, and it keeps powering down every couple of minutes after I switch it on, for no reason whatsoever. And even after re-installing Windows, changing my PCI cards around etc etc, it still continues to do this for no obvious reason. I'm not sure if it's a hardware or OS problem, so it looks like I'll be out of action for a while, until I'm able to buy a new computer to make the games or something.. unless anyone here knows of a magic fix for the problem?

Trust Micro$oft.. it seems they actually charge you money now, even if you simply email them for technical support for one of their products! Unbelievable..

Re: Translators: Please Read
If you re-installed Windows it seems to be a hardware problem.

As you described it i'd say it's a heat problem, although I can't explain why it occured from one day to another. Did you try to leave your computer case open or to renew the paste you place between processor and cooler (don't know the English word, heat-conducting)?

Try to switch the second level cache off in the bios, I once had a problem there and it was *really* hard to find. If you have the opportunity lend a processor from a friend. If it still doesn't work it's not (only) the processor. I hope for you it isn't the mainboard. Mine was broken four weeks ago and it was a lot of work. Good luck!

Jan

Re: Translators: Please Read
Hi I'm not really an expert but I've also had some problems with my computer and it can be hard to figure out what the problem is. First of all have you changed anything in the bios?
I think its a hardware problem (since thats what I always have problem with and it can give you al sorts of problems)

I can be a memorychip problem. Some really strange thing can happen with those...
Check if some of them are loose, if not test one at a time (if you have several).
If that doesnt change anything borrow a friends memorychip.
If nothing works its probably not a memory issue.

Then I suggest:
Try another powerunit (borrow from a friend again <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> ) if that doesn't work:
pull everything out and try everything on at a time and see if you can figure if wich card causes the problem. Could be the graphic card or possibly the modem. Clean away dust that might becouse problems also...
Cant think of anything more right now.
Good luck

/mason

Re: Translators: Please Read
Thanks for the tips guys. in the end I just ended up buying a new $1700 system, because I couldn't be bothered trying to find the source of the problem. It was most likely the power supply, but I didn't want to risk it shutting down while I was in the middle of making the game! Now I'm just copying all my old files across.

By the way, Mason.. sure, just use the special characters when you do your tranlsation. I'm sure AGS will eventually support them.

Re: Translators: Please Read
Oh, well. Yes, I didn't think of *that* solution. But it should work <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> !

Jan

Re: I need just a little HELP with this.
Hi, I am now almost done with this Icelandic translation (again) but there is one quest in the game that is really bugging me now. It is this gnome name guessing . I beleave there are not many people who had heard or read the story about the Rumplestiltskin yet. And this message "Something is good to think backward" is the most stubbiest clue to help people out with this. People doesn´t think backward about something ,you know. I remember myself getting stuck with this name guessing ,until I read the walkthrough in some old magazine in my old days.I was wondering if it will be ok to put the right name of the gnome on the note ,from witch house, instead for this message "All your base belong to us". Will it be to much trouble if I do that ? I think it will be much easier for the people to find the name in the game then, so what do you think about that idea ?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/ufribbi.showPu ... >Fribbi at: 4/5/02 7:15:50 pm

Re: I need just a little HELP with this.
It's up to you. But keep in mind that the "all your base are belong to us" is an easter egg that has about 1:15 chance of appearing, so it's very easy to miss as well. (I doubt people will try to read the note even a second time, let alone about 10 times)

I guess if nobody out there knows about that fairy tale, you could either put the name on the note, or leave a message on the note that gives a cryptic hint.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/nashg ...

Re: I need just a little HELP with this.
Ok I´ll do it then. BTW, I will make a greater hint for the children. And instead for this message "It would be great to think backward" I will put some poem just to give some better clue to the ( young) people so they can find the name. I hated the original clue anyway and btw I hope it is ok I change the real name of the gnome to something else.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/ufribbi.showPu ... >Fribbi at: 4/6/02 6:37:40 pm
