damn.
23 megabytes for a demo ??????!!!!!!!!

what have you put there ? Quake 1 ? WHY IS IT SO BIG ?
20-30 megabytes was kqvga FULL!

Show mercy :p

Seriously, consider compressing the audio files.(IF audio is the cause)
=============================================
EDIT

OR create an additional 'lite' version : file length is normal because
audio is removed

I couldn't get home! I clicked the hand on "Larry's Home" and just wound up in the jungle.

I wanna see the lesbians, Fribbi, dammit! What are you doing to me tempting me like this?!??!?!?!? :p

I had to do this because that area was not ready. In this demo you can only see and explore some new area ,but there is no neat actions or things you can take. This was my last trashdemo. I just hope I will not get more unhappy fans after this. :o :cry

23 megabytes and you can only see ? Jesus!!!
No thanks. I prefer to download Duke Nukem shareware instead, which is half the length and you can shoot, kill, walk, run, arm, make 'em feel pain, pay women, see naked women and watch them dancing!

Hahahaha! :rollin

I know I am a big sucker now because I have found that out I am not the only guy who has a homepage called "GAMEMAKER" because I found this page.

http://www.gamemaker.nl/index.html

I have not tried this out but the games I have seen from it is in very old style just like the AGS games.

Yeah I know it sucks when everything I do goes in wrong way!

Why can't I use jpg or gif picture on this AGS? Jpg takes lesser bytes than BMP pictures as you all know. It will help me to shrink the size of the game as you know.

Well maybe I will use the midi sounds instead of mp3 music from now on in the future to cut more of the size down.

That demo was the last demo of the Lsl3vga. Strange that weird little spanish goon is gone now and I am not going to guess why that happened suddenly.

JPG is not allowed by AGS.
GIF can be used, i had no problem importing backgrounds of various bit colors in GIF format (which were BMPs before conversion).
Which bmp2gif converter are u using ? What exactly is the problem you have when you import a gif ?

Music can be in a separate file, so that people with 56k can avoid download music and focus on the graphics/puzzles

What is the size of your average BMP ? What color depth are you using ?

Bare in mind that color depth plays important role in the file length.
A BMP which is 105 KB in 16 bit color, reaches 157KB in 24 bit color
and 210KB in 32 bit color!!!! Use 16 bit color, and personally i would suggest using GIF with 8 bit color. The same file of the previous example
in GIF-256 colors, weights only 40KB!!! (1/7th !!)
This is the best for demo versions and let people have a good taste without spending much time in downloading.
Later on when you complete the game, you can add the 16 bit color depth pictures ;)

It wouldn't matter if you were allowed to use other kinds of graphics in AGS because:

- AGS stores backgrounds in its own format, whether you import them as BMP's or PCX. Therefore, the backgrounds in rooms are already more or less compressed.

- Sprites are not compressed in AGS for performance reasons. Since they're simple bitmaps, you'll find that that part compresses quite well.

I fear that this is not 100% true
example :

Created a single room with

a)24 bit color BMP house.bmp PICTURE LENGTH =157 KB
===> EXE length =797 KB

b)The BMP was converted to TGA with RLE compression and color depth was decreased to 16 bit color PICTURE LENGTH = 87 KB (70 KB less then initial)
===> EXE length =709 KB (87 KB less then initial
70 KB + 17 KB)

I concluded that nomatter how AGS compresses the picture (gain=17 KB comparing to the first case), the original format plays the most important role in the final executable size (gain=70 KB with TGA format).

What suprised me is that AGS had no choice of importing GIF files.
I am not sure why i remembered that it could :(

So Fribbi forget about GIF, and if you want to squeeze the EXE as much as possible do them TGAs with RLE compression and in 16 bit color.

(well if you have MANY screens. If you have only 4-5 screens, there is no need to do this process...we are talking for 350KB gain only)

#141 Post by Fribbi » Sat Oct 23, 2004 6:53 pm

Just a little announcement for everybody.

But I have finally fond up the name on my little lonly company. I just couldn't dare to use the old Sierra logo because t will be so risky then.

The name is "RASIER"

And please don't ask me why. I think it is so obvious now. :p :)

Well if you didn't know Rog, Roger Wilco is the big guest star in my Leisure Suit Larry 3 game. He will appear in the piano bar where Patti are playing on the piano. And the famous singer Elvis Presley was there too but I want to exchange that part. I'm going to change the story just like AGDI did with KQ2 but just a little bit. I'm going to put more special Sierra guest star in that game because Leisure suit Larry 3 will be my only remake I will work on.

The oppressive city of Raseir in QFG2 was a reference to the harsh policies at Sierra at that time. The main villains even got their names derived from some co-workers of the Coles at that time.
