Help Learning VGA sprite making

#1 Post by HJRodrigo » Wed Jan 19, 2005 8:28 pm

I was thinking of trying to make sprites for SQ2, but I have no experience with this kind of sprite. Please give me any pointers/suggestions/comments. Here is my first attempt of remaking a sierra sprite.

P.S. My end goal is to be able to make original sprites with no use of a template.

Very nice job!

There was a thread similar to this a few months back; here is the link.

In case some are too lazy to click said link and go back, here's a picture I made explaining how you can work on sprites.

Basically, take a SIERRA VGA sprite, look at it closely, then use MSPaint and try to copy the style, pixel by pixel.

Your sprite looks very nice.  The tricky part is not MAKING a sprite, but animating it.  Animation is more difficult, as you have to make a FEW pixels imply quite a bit.  AGD2 is really good at this kind of work.

Anyway, good luck!

Well, I must say that Paint PixelbyPixel technique is too complicated, and the results are not really Sierraish; check out KQ3VGA screens for example and compare half-ripped Alexander sprite and original Paint brigands sprites to see.
Photoshop can save a lot of pixel work; you'll have to do a pixel edit, but overall it will be much faster nad nicer.

:lol  For a second there you had me confused. I was like "When had Sierra made a KQ3 VGA version!!", but then I realized you were refering to a fan project. By Photoshop, I imagine you mean create a large version and then resize it and give it a limited palette.

P.S. I forgot to fix the bottom of her skirt so I uploaded a newer version

I suggest combining photoshop and image ready to animate/edit your sprites. If you use image ready to set up the animations, you can jump back and forth from photoshop and make any minor changes with ease.

Well since every one keeps mentioning animations. Here is a real quick one I made just for fun.

Here is another attempt at a character (Guess who). She is a rough state, but you get the idea of where I am headed. Suggestions/advice/edits?

P.S. BT if you have e-mailed me I didn't get it (My junk filters are really sensitive)
