My personal most annoying dead-end occured in KQ5.
I neglected to break of a piece of crystal in the caves after defeating the yeti, and so could not get past the serpent statues guarding Mordack's castle.
I also had to restart the catacomb sequence in KQ6 several times, due to always lacking some item or other needed to progress. I think one needed something like three or four items from all over the Green Isles to get anywhere in that death trap!
Us gamers can certainly put up with a lot of abuse from game designers! :lol

In all fairness, when you get to the Winged Ones leaders, if you don't have all the necessary items, they allow you to leave. If you do have all the items, you go straight to the catacombs.
I'd always save just before going and talking to them. If they let me leave, I knew I was missing something, so I'd restore from that point and go find what ever it was and then go talk to them again.
Of course, this only works if you've played before. :p

I haven't played it in ages, so my memories are pretty hazy, but that does seem make it a little more fair. I guess my strongest memories are indeed those of playing the game for the first time.navynuke04 wrote:In all fairness, when you get to the Winged Ones leaders, if you don't have all the necessary items, they allow you to leave. While I'd be the first to say that KQ6 is the best Sierra game ever, it is not quite fair regarding dead ends. For instance if you enter the castle at the end while carrying the wrong item from the pawn shoppe, you can't get through, nor can you leave. And if you leave the Realm of the Dead without obtaining certain spell components, you can't get in the castle. Ah well, guess there are no perfect games
Except for MI2, of course
did any monkey island games have dead ends? and now that I think about it I never ran into any ever. Although I didn't play KQ5 as much as I'd like to and I can't find my CD anymore. I geuss in all fairness though I haven't played to mnay of those games. let see the only dead end I can think of is in Max Payne if you quicksave right before getting shot in the face. You are then forced to watch max get murdered for eternity. But that's not even a puzzle game!
Meerbat -> not really. You can throw just about everything in the ship's cauldron, except those few items you're going to need later (e.g. the pamphlet). And if you destroy the mugs at the end of chapter 1, more mugs will appear. It's pretty well thought-out, actually.
The only 'dead end' is by killing Guybrush (yes, it's possible).

I was just going to check if I remembered correctly, but I had deleted my old saved games :x
However, I didn't mean to put it in the cauldron, but in the fire below it. Could be mistaken though, I don't have enough time to check it now.
And yes, it was really well thought of, with so many potential loose ends being taken care of. Not to mention it was one of the few LucasArts games with an alternative ending (well, other than Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis). It does ruin much of Escape from Monkey Island though, where they had to assume one of the endings was the "true" one and disregarded the alternative.
