Questions about Quest for Glory 4

#1 Post by Vildern » Sat Jan 29, 2005 10:31 pm

I'm about to be the jubilant owner of an original QFG4 CD-version copy. I was told, though, that it's a problematic game to run.

I've Pentium 4 (1.44 gigaherz), Windows XP, Service Pack 2 – Does it work properly on such a computer? Fairly advanced than the computers it was designed for.

I heard about that ‘Error 52' thingamajig,  is there a patch for it? Or a way to go around it? Are there programs to deal with it?

Finally, did you have a good and happy experience with this game? I really hope I could play it... so far, I'm enjoying QFG1 quite a bit.

Thanks, I'll check those patches out, when I've the game.

And QFG1 is loads of fun! When you start the game it seems there are many dialogues, but as you make progress, they don't bother you. In fact, you become increasingly interested.

It's fairly easy to master (unlike QFG5).

The CD version of QFG4 has always run natively under Windows XP for me, albeit with sound problems. I've been told that running it with DOSBox or installing a compatibility package like VDMSound produces better results, though I've never tried it.

Are you kidding?? Of course it's worth playing! It wasn't voted "Adventure Game of the Year" in 1989 for nothing, you know. :p

1989? Was that the original or remake?

I think I'd have to play the remake lol.

Original; the remake was made in 1992. I found the combat much easier in the remake.

That's good news, Charles! So far, owners of XP told me it's a pain to run it under XP! So, maybe there's hope after all.

Perhaps your friends didn't enable the compatibility mode? The binary won't run unless you've enabled Windows 95 compatibility. It might run with another setting, but since QFG4 was released in late 1993 I figured the oldest OS compatibility was appropriate. I never tried anything else.

Just read the reviews at MobyGamse ;) This is the main thing they complain about. Fiddling with the compability might help, it sometimes do, but for some reason, in some games it has no effect.

Aww man,

Deb and I are actually trying to play QFG1 VGA but before we've even started we get the unable to initialise audio problem. I'm using VDMSound so that hasnt helped. Is Dosbox the only solution? Isnt it really slow or something?

Disregard that message, it means nothing. I get it with VDMS, but have music playing just fine during the game. I've no idea why it shows it.

Before you play it, patch the game with the proper patch from the link you posted here ;)

Oh, and never steal from the healer! It leads to a dead end.

I got no trouble running it with Dosbox. Sounds work fine and just increase the speed a few times and it works like a dream.

The Audio Initilise problem means that digital effects (speech, sound FX) wont play because it cant load the driver for it. Music plays fine as that is a different driver.

I'm using Dosbox now with the D-Fend front end which is really good and the game runs fine and I dont get the audio message!!

Soul, how many CPU cycles would you recommend as 3000 seems a bit slow?

I'm using NewRisingSun's patches so technically it shouldnt matter if for example I cranked it up to max would it?

Also how many cycles should be used for all Sierra games in general?

What do you mean speech? There are no voices in the game?

Oh, and in Dos-Box it only works in a window-mode, how can you resize it?

Press ALT-ENTER to maximise Dosbox.

Thanks!

And how would you increase the cycles?

I used D-Fend which allows you to change settings via Windows for Dosbox.

True there are no voices in QFG1 but what I meant was that Digital Audio = Speech and Sound FX.

So if the Audio doesnt initialise in QFG1 then you will hear no speech nor sound effects so just in this case you'll hear no sound effects as there isnt any speech.

Yup thats the digital audio!

I keep it around 10000 cycles and it works mighty fine.

Actually, the optimal setting differs on each individual computer. Just fiddle around until you find it.
