How do I extract backgrounds from Sierra SCI and VGA games?
First of all, sorry if this thread is inappropriate in any way... I noticed on this page the thread from a few months ago asking the same thing only about sprites, but I didn't want to revive it. Anyhow with backgrounds it's obviously much simpler so I thought my case may be different.
I tried using many screen-capture programs but none of them can capture fullscreen MS-DOS properly, because of WinXp.
The one suggested in that other thread per payable donation is sadly not an option for me. Is there any other program that can extract the backgrounds out of game files? Or a screen-capture one that can manage MS-DOS in windows?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

for lucasarts games scumm revisited works for exporting backgrounds and music files from games, it even works with CMI.. i'll get you the link: http://www.aqqo39.dsl.pipex.com/downloads/scummrev2.zip
This information is for AGI games only, e.g. KQ1 (original), KQ2, KQ3, KQ4 (low-res), LSL1 (original), PQ1 (original), SQ1 (original), SQ2, Gold Rush, and a few others:
If you simply want a screen capture, run the game with NAGI, then do Alt+PrtScrn and past the image into Paint or some other paintbrush program.
If you want to extract the background only, without any objects or sprites on it, you can do that with AGI Studio.

Thanks to all for your advice. I think I'll find the lucasarts program as well as SCI studio useful. Though I wish there was a way to extract backgrounds specifically from Sierra's VGA games. I see NAGI isn't compatible with those. It's just that those MS-DOS screens absolutely can't be minimized to a window via alt-enter or any other way.

I think it would be easier if you say the name of the game. It's possible to extract backgrounds from some vga sci games.spacecadet wrote:Is there any other program that can extract the backgrounds out of game files? Or a screen-capture one that can manage MS-DOS in windows?
For screen-capture you can use dosbox.

Indeed, thats the best solution thats more pain free than other methods.orieac wrote:I think it would be easier if you say the name of the game. Getting a bit cocky over having the beta version arent ya? ;)Blackthorne519 wrote:The ONLY way to get SCI VGA resources is SCI STUDIO VGA, which hasn't been officially released yet. You said you can't PayPal donate, so I guess you're up shit creek without a paddle. Hopefully someday Brian will release it publicly.

Whats that? It cant be the Sci Decoder because it hardly works with any VGA game.Blackthorne519 wrote:Not really. I don't even use it much. I have another program which works much better.Reptile wrote: Getting a bit cocky over having the beta version arent ya? ;)

He must have the beta version of sci studio. That's why he ignores this topic.Reptile wrote:

Of course he does. He stated as much.orieac wrote:He must have the beta version of sci studio. That's why he ignores this topic.Reptile wrote:

What I don't understand is why he feels the need to protect this "other, better program" so much. Why all the secrecy, BT? If you're not going to share with everyone, the least you could do is stop baiting us.
