King's quest 5 Remix, "Drunken Bandit."

#1 Post by Defiant1 » Sun Jun 04, 2006 12:24 am

Hey guys, I wrote a remix to the Bandit Camp song in King's Quest Five.

Just thought I'd drop a link in case anyone would like it.  I like it, but I don't know if that is considered bias, or what. :P  :)

Thanks,

Nice rendition! What program(s) did you use to create this?

Thanks!  I used FL-Studio.  The drums were mousedone, because 1.  I wanted this song to have different drums throughout, and 2.  I'm not even that good with loops anyway.   Slicing I've only done very little of and it would have been heinous with this song.  I also found a really cool freeware VST synth called "Claw," that allows you a very tweakable sound by using only velocity settings.

I started out using Modplug tracker in 2004, then moved to Renoise for a bit, and I just got FL last Christmas, and that's where I've been since.  FL would *work* with a total beginner, but I recommend someone starting out with Modplug, simply because FL has a lot of gadgets and plugins that can become addicting, and miss out on the whole sample experience altogether.

Sounds like my musical history. I started off with MODs as well. First started writing music with Impulse Tracker. Then moved to MODPlug Tracker. I still have some MODs on www.modarchive.com. I moved to FLStudio after that but not so much. I kinda only used it for certain things and skipped right over to Magix Audio Studio 5. Since then I've gotten Sonar 5 Producer and newer versions of FL Studio. I've been moving into the MIDI realm lately. Haven't done MODs in a long time. But they were easy to get into.

I've just finished recompressing and redoing the drums, and  I'm going to submit this song to a judging panel, which will remain anonymous unless I make it. :P

So, I'd appreciate any objective opinions on the sound quality and anything else you'd like to say before I submit it tomorrow, if possible. Thanks everyone.

You probably don't want my opinion, but- why would you take a russian folk dance style track and turn it into a synth-lead trance track (sorry if i've confused my genres, that's the best I can describe it as)?

Haven't heard this second version, admittedly, but it doesn't sound like you changed *that* much.

Well in which case, I'll throw it on the pile with the trance version of "Erana's Peace", the rock remix of "Isle of Wonder", and Troels Pleimert's various weird SQ remixes (to name but a few), then.

Brandon, people don't JUST remix something because they 'want to'. Wanting to implies (to me at least) they want to take it in a new but similar direction, improve it somehow. This may fill requirement a) but certainly doesn't b), in my opinion at least. Taking a piece from one genre to something that it's completely not (i.e. russian folk->trance) is a terrible idea for game remixes (in my opinion, once more). If you like nightclub music, go to a club. But, that's just my opinion, and if that's what folks want, then it has its' place, I guess.
