QFG5 crash problem with minos scene. (Spoilers involved)
hey i was wondering if someone could help me, i was playin qfg5 and i got to the part where you have to give the lockpick set to Elsa and fight the minotaur and things were fine and after i killed them you walk up and Minos does his little speech and falls and then the screen shakes once and elsa says something and then the screen shakes again and the screen just blinks on me the bar at the bottom of the screen dissapears, and turns black down there and then the status bars just reappear and it just hangs there, so i thought maybe i needed to get a patch for it and i found the 1.02 patch and upgraded it. Same thing. So i copied the saved games out of the folder and then uninstalled the game, rebooted, then reinstalled the game. and then copyed the saved games back into the folder and tried again and got the same thing. so i thought well maybe my cd's are messed up and i used Roxio to copy the cds into 2 image files and then used the Roxio Image loader to make it as another drive and then did the whole uninstall reinstall that way and still it kept crashing at that point. So i don't know if my cd's are messed up or if some system issue that causeing the problem, i used the compatibility of the shortcut and tried it once with Windows 95, then windows 98, then windows 2000, tried it with 640x480, tried it with 256 colors. i mean you name that i've tried it. So if anyone has any thoughts on this that would be great.

It sounds like you're not getting the QuickTime video of the Dragon of Doom rising. You may want to check your QuickTime settings and possibly downgrade to the version included on the Dragon Fire CD.
If that fails, you may just have to try a new game; QfG5 is known to gain systemic glitches that build up over time (much like QfG4) that can render the game unplayable.

Yeah i used the quicktime 3.0 that came with it so i guess all thats left is the other option of restarting it lol. That suxs i'm on day like 49 in that with all of my skills maxed out. The only problems other than that, was that as a random occurance as i would be walkin around the island and a random fight would pick up it would crash. and as long as i just saved it i could reload the save and pick right back up and it wouldn't happen for a while again.
edit: so i went back and found the actual .mov files and watched them and the quicktime itself had no problem loading them up and i double checked the version of the quicktime player that defaulted to open when i double clicked the mov files and it was quicktime 3.0 so thats all setup good. And so i went back to the game and i got the thought i don't remember seeing the intro video this time while i was playing either so i clicked introcuction and it told me to put back in the Install Disc, so i did that and then it took me right back to the menu, so i clicked introduction again and it froze for a second and then flash and was back at the menu so i definatly think its something to do with between the game and quicktime.

Ok so i just went back and reinstalled Quicktime 7, i didn't use the Quicktime 7+iTunes since i already have itunes installed on here which would make me think i still have quicktime 7 as well and i was right, because it only gave me the option of Repair and Remove, so i hit repair, it closed out all my open windows and did its thing, i hit finish, i restarted my computer and then loaded the game again and still the same thing.
edit: i am thinking about tryin to uninstall any form of quicktime on here 3, 7 what ever else lol. But i don't want it to mess up my iTunes library stuff for my ipod, and then going ahead and trying 3 alone and if that doesn't work then uninstalling that, and then tryin 7. i'm gonna try 3 first because thats really what the game wants.
Edit 2: ok so i got all the quicktime software removed from my computer. i then reinstall the quicktime 3.0.2 from the install disc back onto my computer, i didn't check the see sample movie i just restarted it after it was done, i loaded it up and got and error message, so i uninstalled it and then tried the copy off of the Game Disc, whole thing over reboot try it error message.
QuickTime Unavailable
Quicktime Failed to Initialize Error # -2095.
Please Make Sure Quicktime is Properly Installed On This Computer.
so i deleted that
so then i decided to look around more on the net trying all kinds of searches when i came across this site
http://home.planet.nl/~harms646/questforglory5.html
Its a page that has 2 patches, (the 1.2 patch and someones unsupported win2k/xp patch) and instructions for getting the game to work. Which also says don't install 3.0 you have to use the newest version, and then install the 2 patches and its good to go with no change in compatability in the shortcut. so i tried all this out hit the intro video it worked loaded my saved game and beat the goons and minotaur and then the dragon awaking video poped up and worked so i guess then i got my answer. thank you.

I have exactly the same problem, and while the patches solve the quicktime issue, I still get the crashes when a random combat occurs. I guess that's not a problem for you since you are already at the end of the game, but I'm barely at the Rite of Conquest and I can not go into (random) combat, which is quite annoying since I'm playing with a fighter!
I might try to start from scratch to see if it helps, but if someone knows another way of bypassing these errors please let me know! :(
I'm going purely from memory with this one, but I THINK the random combat crash is caused if you use the mystic magnets on yourself while on the overworld map. From that moment on, the game gets corrupted in some way and a random battle may cause crashes. In order to avoid the crash, warp home from a battle scene or dragon pillar, but not straight from the overworld map.

The problem
According to A Hero's Quest for Glory, there's a systemic glitch (much like the statistic screen crashing QfG4) in Dragon Fire that's induced by using the Mystic Magnets on generic island interior panoramas (basically, random battle sites not on the coastline) which results in random battles crashing the game. Supposedly the overworld map is okay with the MM, but it's not a complete certainty. Basically, use the Magnets from underwater panoramas, coastal panoramas, any specific location (Dragon Pillars, Pegasus Nest, Keros, etc.) but not from any generic interior. It's a systemic glitch that, if you've already performed the trigger once, it will eventually hit you, just like the statistic screen consistently crashing QfG4, and all you can do is restart the game (any saved game after MM usage will carry the glitch).

Yeah, that happened to me too with my Wizard (with Thief skills). I was practicing all my spells and decided leaving a bunch of Boom skulls lying around town was a bad idea. So, I went out into the wilderness and cleared a random encounter, thinking that the skulls there would disappear after I left (note that encounter areas are re-used so they didn't disappear). Unfortunately, I had thrown all my MP worth of skulls right in front of the entrance, so I couldn't leave without using the magnets or killing myself with the skulls exploding in my face. I didn't know about this bug, so I used the magnets. Subsequent random encounters crashed my game, but I did manage to complete the game, avoiding walking in the wilderness as much as possible. Fortunately I had already done the walk to Pegasis Peaks, but unfortunately I had most of the rites to yet do. It was a long, sometimes frustrating, process, but I managed to get through. Getting through QfG4 with all the random crashes (even patched) must have helped me cope.
What really irritated me was planning the whole time to marry Katrina as a Wizard, but then her responding like I was playing a Thief because of a few (unpracticed in this game) extra skills. I should have known something was going to go wrong when the FA gave me a stealth charm instead of the (albeit useluess) Nuke spell.

Now you've got me worried.Brainiac wrote:According to It's a systemic glitch that, if you've already performed the trigger once, it will eventually hit you, just like the statistic screen consistently crashing QfG4, and all you can do is restart the game (any saved game after MM usage will carry the glitch).
You've tried changing the compatibility to different versions of Windows?
Also, judging from the point at which it crashes, another possibliity is that it's encountering an error when trying to check for the CD - Dragon Fire will start up without trying to detect the CD, but it will check for it once you try to start a game (maybe when you load as well, can't remember). But if this is the problem I'm not sure how to fix it. :/

I'm not sure the install will make much difference. All the bigger installs do is copy more data over to the HD, so that less needs to be read from the CD during the game, which can make things a bit jumpy. It shouldn't make any major difference.
To change compatibility mode, right-click on the shortcut you use to start the game, click "Properties," then switch to the Compatibility tab in the window that pops up. There you should see a box that says something like "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" Check the box, and try out the various versions of Windows that you can choose just underneath it. (QFG5 was originally developed for Win95, but that may not actually mean it runs best in the corresponding compatibility mode; if Win95 compatibility doesn't work well for you, try the others. I, for instance, found that Win95 compatibility actually made the sound buggy for me.)
Note that, since you're attaching these properties to the shortcut, it may not effect things if you use the "autorun" that pops up when you insert the DF CD. Make sure you run the game from the shortcut and not the CD in order for the compatibility settings to take effect.

That's unfortunate, there are some nasty bugs if you can't patch it to 1.2 update... I wouldn't recommend giving up on patching unless you can help it.
So you've tried applying the Win2k fan update in addition to the 1.2 patch?
If you have and that's what you're getting trouble under, have you tried it with just the 1.2 patch, no Win2k update?
