Quest for Glory V in Vista...

#1 Post by Groveborn1234 » Sat Feb 09, 2008 9:33 am

There is woefully inadequate information on a Google search, so I present my problem here, in hopes of a solution.

I can't seem to get QFG5 to run on Vista.  I've tried just the regular install, I've tried version 1.2, and I've tried the win2k patch.  I can get into the game, just not play it.  It simply dumps me to the desktop when I attempt to import or play the game.  I haven't tried to restore a game, as I have no saved games... but I'd imagine it'd have the same problems.

My computer...
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
3 gigs DDR 2 533
160 GB SATA
Geforce 7300 LT
Vista Ultimate 32 bit

Does DosBox work on Vista? Virtual PC/VMWare?

QFG5 is a windows95 game, so it doesn't run on DosBox.

I'm afraid I have no idea what causes the crash either. Are you playing on win98 compatibility mode?

Only thing would be to install a Vista version of Virtual PC or VMWare and then install Win95 in that virtual enviroment.

Worked wonders for me with Toon Struck which ran even better than it did in DosBox.

Isn't VMWare expensive?

I have VMware, I was just hoping to not install another OS... oh well.  VMware Server is free, and does most everything the average user could want...

I can load saved games, I can move around in said saved games.  I can't use the mouse, as it'll dump me out.  I can't use the standard number buttons, or it dumps me out.  I installed the QT3 to see if that helped anything, it didn't.  I do have the game in win95 compatibility.  Putting QT3 into compatibility mode didn't help.

I'm just hoping someone out there figures a methode other than Virtualizing it.  Maybe Vivendi will be nice and release a patch...

I wouldn't count on VU releasing a patch...they're not even selling the game right now

Have you tried playing WITH the unofficial win2k patch to avoid the crash at the start, but WITHOUT the game running in compatibility mode. The two might conflict.

I also have Vista and i was able to play it.
1st right click the install file and choose properties and windows compatibility to windows xp and check run in administrator. install the game.
2nd install both the patch and win2k patch.
3rd right click the icon on the desk top and choose properties and windows compatibilty to windows xp and check run in administrator.
Also make sure you have at least quicktime player 7.3.0.70 that is the one i have.

It should work now.

Hmmm. Didn't work.

I guess there's something with my setup.  Maybe a service, or a theme.  I turned off the vista theme, tried it that way.  I reduced the  resolution, nothing.  Perhaps it's only going to work with particular geetups.
