Hi,
I don't want to ask too broad of a question as I know the best way to proceed to setting up a bulletin board is to experiment, read, and learn it myself, but:
I'm new to phpBB outside of downloading the software and then I also downloaded XAMPP. I finally got the phpBB software to run through Xampp but then it complained that it couldn't find a database to connect to.
I'm not looking to get support for Xampp on this board, but wanted to ask, how does AGD run the phpBB board? If I wanted to set up a board to run just like this (on a local machine for now), what software would you recommend I get (or is there a tutorial I can look up)?
Appreciated,
Oriel

Most sites that are PHP based run some distribution of linux, where those that are ASP based run Microsoft. I am using XAMPP to run my own private server and its works very well. When you installed XAMPP it should have also installed MySQL and Apache by default. Both needs need to be set up and running before you can start to install anything that requires a database back end such as phpbb. XAMPP comes with a management tool that tells you if both services are running. I suggest you see if they are, if not you should start them before trying to install phpbb. if they do not start, uninsatall XAMPP and reinstall it. if it still does not work then you need to ask over at the XAMPP site for support.
EDIT: Full documentation on how to install phpbb can be found at

When I first set these boards up, I had a test running on my local computer (Windows XP).
I used Apache web server, PHP, mySQL, phpMyAdmin, and phpBB.
This is the tutorial I used when setting up my test machine:

Navynuke:
I followed the link you sent. Why do I need so many files and programs? ASP.NET only requires IIS. Now I have to install Apache, Pearl, PHP, CGI...don't understand what all these have to do with it.
*Update: LOL The ricochet's tutorial is driving me NUTS! Like, he wants you to change the default settings on everything and talks about his Linux while on the front page it says you need Windows XP Pro sp2.

Apache, PHP, mySQL, etc are typical of most web hosts out there. Plus, they are all free programs. I don't think you really have to install CGI, as phpBB doesn't use it.
The tutorial is a bit confusing at first, but if you look closely, you can find everything it says to change. I've set up several web servers using this tutorial, and haven't had any problems.
I'm sure there are other ways to go about setting things up. I've never used XAMPP. But you asked what I did when I set these boards up. There you go.

Search with Google for EasyPHP. It creates a simple 'server' on your computer with php and mysql included. You can experiment on that if you want... (without having to install a bunch of stuff).
