Don't you just love LightScribe. I think I'm addicted to it.
Re: Random rants go here.
Lightscribe as in the automated disc image labeler that etches a label via the drive itself? I've think I've used that about twice, the process can take so long.
Unless of course you mean some new game or drug. But I'm betting it's the deep former.

If it is the burning, then yeah. Pretty cool. If you make an effort you can get a fantastic effect with it... now just to find a good enough reason to use it.

And you never will. Get an older computer with Windows 98 or lower. Or download Wine. Or something.

We had mixed up Mother goose on our computers at school when I was in grade 2. Also, Incredible Machines.

In my case, it was Apple IIe's with Mother Goose and, of course, The Oregon Trail. Fifth and sixth grade were the good computers at the advanced program, one having The Fool's Errand. Now THAT is a headgame.Lady Pyro wrote:We had mixed up Mother goose on our computers at school when I was in grade 2. Also, Incredible Machines.

Oh man, I'd completely forgotten about Oregon Trail. I'm almost convinced that was standard on any computer that was to be placed in a school. I failed at it. I don't think I got through it even once.Brainiac wrote: In my case, it was Apple IIe's with Mother Goose and, of course, The Oregon Trail. In sixth grade I got sent to a fancy new school that looked way to sterile, and one of the teacher's put Monkey island on the computer that projected on to the white board. I remember me and a group of nerds finishing it in front of the whole class one day. I'm not entirely sure where the teacher was at the time...
I've never heard of Fool's errand though, impossible was it?

Impossible, no; quite hard, yes. To sample, check out the designer's website for the game here (and consider ordering the sequel if you like the downloadable original - it's due out on April Fool's, of course).Lady Pyro wrote:I've never heard of Fool's errand though, impossible was it?

A note to all animators: Never work in Nova Scotia.
Holy hell do I hate my job right now.

Re: Random rants go here.
Here, here. Don't cry. I've heard that most studios are awful, because the direction is always more concerned with making money than with having a good product, and they all treat horribly their animators. Here in Spain there's one studio called D'Ocon that only produces crappy toons no one wants to watch, and I know of a friend that had to make his drawings worse because the other animators couldn't catch him.Lady Pyro wrote:A note to all animators: Never work in Nova Scotia.

Also, they are known for selling entire seasons of their series that feature nothing save reused artwork, to save costs.

This sucks. No wonder all the good spanish animators are working for Disney America. ._.

Re: Random rants go here.
It's terrible to hear how bad some of these studios can get!
I was spoiled. The first studio I worked for was Golden! My Boss treated us great, we had 'beer and pizza' nights twice a month and the bonuses were fantastic!
Unfortunately between the writers strike (No scripts meant no work) and the bad American economy (in other words, all our investors) the studio shut down.
Now I work for a company that pays half as much as you should get and is withholding my pay until the shadows (something THEY were supposed to put in) get put into all 60 of my previous scenes (they're doing this to everyone but since I'm faster then the others in my studio, I have the most scenes).
This sh*thole is too cheap to hire any supervisors, so all our work goes unchecked for months, then he comes back with a month (sometimes two) worth of revisions that all have to be done at once, knocking out another week of work (I only get paid by the scene, not the hour, so that's a week of no paying work). When normally it would take about 15 minutes and the beginning of a week to fix up all these little things, if they'd been handed out right away!
And the Bastard treats me like a child I don't know why, but the guys think it's because I'm the only female animator. So I get lectures on the basics of animation, despite the fact that all my scenes have the things he's talking about in them! (The main problem is he sees the same mistake in 30 scenes because no one told me I was doing it wrong after the first set of five. We didn't get any direction on this show either! No timing, no style notes! So everyone's just winging it).
Today was terrible though. I got called in (I work from home half the week) for a 'Private meeting' at 2:30 (Pretty much so he could lecture and belittle me again).
3:00 rolls around and he still hasn't shown up.
I tell a co-worker to pass on the message that I did in fact show up on time, but was starting home (an hour long walk) so that I could actually finish this work I wasn't getting paid for. Well he shows up just as I'm about out the door. Refusing to reschedule for another day he leaves me waiting until 3:30. Then he goes to rush out again but notices me. He takes me into the kitchen and proceeds to talk about how he can 'seem some glimmer of good' in my work and starts talking to me like I'm three. Then suggests me reschedule our sit down meeting for next week.
The worst is, I'm done in this Studio. There's no work for the Flash animators right now. I'm supposed to be job hunting but he wont give me this last cheque until all these extra things get added (the revisions I understand but the effects and shadows were the 3D boys jobs. They bailed. Now it's ours).
So long story short: I'm getting blackmailed into working two weeks free for a guy that degrades and humiliates me. And if I bail or don't meet demands, he WILL call up anyone who tries to hire me and tell them not too. He's done it before to others.
On the bright side, I can't work tomorrow! I have to go Bridesmaid dress shopping for my sisters wedding. So instead of being told I should switch careers and go back to school, I'll get comments about how I've put on weight and can't get a boyfriend!
Aw crap, and I told Brainiac I wasn't going to rant tonight. Uuuuugh...Gotta get back to my happy place. Where'd I put Lego Batman?

Re: Random rants go here.
Your boss sounds like a bit of an asshat, LP. I really don't comprehend businesses with that kind of mindset! They fail to comprehend that their workers will be far more productive and give much better results if they're contented in their job. He seems to be counter-productively shooting himself in the foot by turning workers against him, and is only making his job harder for himself in the long run!
Can't you blackmail him back? Destroy all remaining copies of your work so that you hold the only one on a CD, and if he wants it, he'll have to jump through a few hoops?

Re: Random rants go here.
I don't know about how it works in the USA, but here in Spain the problem is that animators are considered artists working as freelancers, and as such, they haven't regulated payments (the client pays if satisfied with the job). Probably they just fired the shadows guy and asked everyone to do his work if they expect to see money. Of course, in Spain she could refuse and keep her drawings, but then she wasted her time and won't get a recommendation (basically, she won't be able to say she had experience working for that slave owner), while her pals will have to redo all her work for free.Anonymous Game Creator 2 wrote:Your boss sounds like a bit of an asshat, LP. Re: Random rants go here.
Dr. Jones is right in how this all works.
Sadly enough (And I knew this going into this studio, I had been warned but there were no other jobs at the time) these guys are notorious as a revolving door for animators.
In fact only three of us have stuck this project out to the end, and the project started out with 15. Over that time the others have been replaced several times by everyone from professionals to students, none of them staying longer then two or three weeks.
But with the animation schools so close by, and the other studios being picky, it seems that this rat hole always manages to find new people, so they don't care about keeping anyone happy.
If I were to take my scenes and leave, I wouldn't get my pay and there's a good chance he'd try to have me blacklisted in the province. The industry is so small here, all the studio directors talk to each other and swap people constantly.
And yeah, even I'm guilty of finishing someone else's scenes after they've left. Unfortunately I have a backbone and refused to do it for free, which I think is why, to make an example of me, my pay that week was missing 150 dollars. The official excuse was that they were never approved, but funny how after snooping around the files, my copies were the ones handed into the client.
But they do that. I know ten people who have gotten ripped off worse then I have working for these guys. But if I go to the labour board, well I can forget about getting hired again in this town.
As much as it goes against everything I stand for, I think my best bet is just to do what they want for now. It means I'm working for free, stressed out of my mind and out of a a paying job for probably another week or two but if I want to work in my industry without having to move away, I think it's my only choice.
Man, I should have just joined the army lol.
