KQ2 VGA v3.0 ERROR with Hq2x and Hq3x filters
This following error occurs when i try to run the game using Hq2x and Hq3x filters, is there something wrong with my system or does the game not run with the said filters?

Re: KQ2 VGA v3.0 ERROR with Hq2x and Hq3x filters
Since this is an engine-related issue, you'd have to post this on the AGS technical forum at:
http://www.bigbluecup.com/yabb/index.php?board=2.0
...so that CJ can look into it.
Remember, it's important to upload the referenced CrashInfo.dmp file. If you have no server space, you could attach it here using the forum's "Upload attachment" feature, and then direct CJ to this post.
Finally, keep in mind that using those filters will actually make the game look worse. It was designed for 320x200 resolution and the highest filter you should really use is the '2x Nearest-Neighbour' one.

..unless of course your card somehow doesn't support it. But yes, I always use the 2x filter, as that's what works on linux with WINE, but any bigger wouldn't look good, I am sure.Anonymous Game Creator 2 wrote: Finally, keep in mind that using those filters will actually make the game look worse. Re: KQ2 VGA v3.0 ERROR with Hq2x and Hq3x filters
320x200 looks kinda blurry when its being scaled to full screen resolution (1920x1200) on my 24 inch monitor. The 2x nearest neighbor would have been great, but somehow it doesn't take up the whole screen and creates a letterbox effect (even when the letterbox option is not selected), which makes the image appear stretched horizontally and ruins the aspect ratio. That is why im forced to use the 4x anti-aliasing which produces the best picture on my screen atm.

Re: KQ2 VGA v3.0 ERROR with Hq2x and Hq3x filters
You poor soul. Anti-aliasing is ew on 320x200 adventure games. If it's stretched horizontally, though, you probably just have to alter your monitor settings.
EDIT: I just realized you said you had a 24-inch 1920x1200 monitor which is widescreen, correct? No wonder the aspect ratio is wrong.

Yeah, but you can still adjust your widescreen monitor to play it normally.
Most widescreens have an 'auto-adjust', and will use that setting only when it encounters that specific resolution.

Re: KQ2 VGA v3.0 ERROR with Hq2x and Hq3x filters
I was finally able to play the game at 2x nearest neighbor and it looks great now. In order to achieve that, i had to open the nvidia control panel, go to flat-panel scaling and change the setting to nvidia scaling with fixed aspect ratio.
The normal 320x200 looks blurry no matter what i do, but i guess you cannot avoid that on a large widescreen monitor.

I think so, but I think on big monitors (I have a 22 inch) 2x is best.papste wrote:I was finally able to play the game at 2x nearest neighbor and it looks great now. Re: KQ2 VGA v3.0 ERROR with Hq2x and Hq3x filters
I have an Acer X193W+ monitor and an NVIDIA graphics cards. In my case, when I used my graphics card's scaling, it would always blur it, and the option to maintain the aspect ratio wouldn't work. So I set that option to use the monitor's scaling, and that leaves the image crisp. Unfortunately, in AGS games, it seems to always stretch it fill the screen, and it pads the image on top and bottom to get a 4:3 resolution before doing so. That means that, on my widescreen monitor, I actually end up with black bars on top and bottom, rather than left and right, so it's double-squished. I don't know of a way to correct this.

That's why I still prefer a CRT monitor to an LCD because unless you're running in its native resolution, an LCD will blur everything and look like crap. Horrible for any game.papste wrote:The normal 320x200 looks blurry no matter what i do, but i guess you cannot avoid that on a large widescreen monitor.

Re: KQ2 VGA v3.0 ERROR with Hq2x and Hq3x filters
Ok. Guess my post was posted with too little knowledge. My DELL widescreen quickly auto-adjust when I play the games. Two other screens I've worked on worked somewhat similar, but I guess it isn't the same for all makes.adeyke wrote:I have an Acer X193W+ monitor and an NVIDIA graphics cards. Re: KQ2 VGA v3.0 ERROR with Hq2x and Hq3x filters
I think the only way you can correct that, is IF your monitor has an aspect ratio setting like the 24" Samsung T240 that i use. In my case all i have to do is access the monitors menu and change the image size from WIDE to AUTO. This setting creates black bars to the left and right and thus fixes the aspect ratio so it doesn't look like its been double-squished. I'm not sure whether your Acer X193W has a similar setting, but it doesn't hurt to check it out. This setting works well with all the NVIDIA scaling options but its best to use your displays build-in scaling option like you mention in your post.adeyke wrote:I have an Acer X193W+ monitor and an NVIDIA graphics cards. Unfortunately, it seems my monitor doesn't have such a setting.

It turns out that the crash when trying to use the Hq2x and Hq3x filters in King's Quest II v3.0 is indeed an engine bug. CJ has confirmed it.

I got it to work. No idea how. Maybe it has something to do with that I am using wine on ubuntu hardy.Anonymous Game Creator 2 wrote:It turns out that the crash when trying to use the Hq2x and Hq3x filters in King's Quest II v3.0 is indeed an engine bug. CJ has confirmed it.
