This game - even its v2 - runs on an outdated AGS engine version.
One way to bypass it is to:
- Download the latest portable version from https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk
- Take acwin.exe from it and put it in the game's folder
- Always use this file to start the game
For the record, this approach didn't support cheats
until AGS v3.5.1.
But now there's even a better way:
Just run the game in ScummVM (
see ScummVM's news announcement), and
it includes the game's cheats!
As of this writing, ScummVM's support for AGS engine games is only in beta, but ScummVM will certainly appreciate your input and any bugs you might encounter in your adventure.

I'd love to play this game with a larger resolution than the ones in the Settings menu. So want to try with Scummvm.
But how?
I install Scummvm. Open it. Then Add Game. Navigate to "C:\Program Files (x86)\AGD Interactive\Quest for Glory II"
But there is nothing to add there (as in, yes there are loads of GFQ2VGA files in that directory but but Scummvm won't show any thus won't let me add the game to Scummvm).
Help please

The SCUMMVM dialog box is looking for a directory, not any particular file. Just click Choose while you're looking in the QfG2 remake directory.

Just a warning playing this with the Wizard. I just tried playing it, and the game keeps crashing at the end of the Wizard Game with Keapon Laffin. This occurs no matter what graphics or sound settings I use. Darned shame. I was really enjoying the replay.
Playing using the latest version of acwin.exe works great though. Just one note that the "Launcher" won't give you all of the possible configuration options. If you want the full menu of options, you'll need to go into the command prompt and then execute "acwin --setup." Then you'll have two options to start the game, "acwin.exe" with the new executable, and "Qfg2vga.exe," which is the older executable.

Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread, but can anybody walk me through adding this game to Scummvm on a mac? I've tried following all of the official steps, but keep getting stuck.

The aforementioned mini-game bug was since reportedly fixed.
Regarding playing on Mac, did you follow
ScummVM's AGS' Mac and Linux releases?
If so, it's probably a general issue since it should be the same for all AGS games and thus better off on ScummVM's own forums.

The trick is to download the Windows version of the game, extract the files from the EXE, then run it on ScummVM on your Mac. This works great for me.
It's a bit fiddly to extract the files from the Windows EXE, since it cant be done natively by the Mac. The good news is that you can use a tool called InnoExtract to extract the files.
If you follow Step 1,2 and 3 of this guide, you'll have a folder that you can point ScummVM to so you can run the game. (Yes, the guide talks about GOG downloads and iPad/iPhone, but the concepts are identical)

Let me know if you get stuck.

I too have problems with playing the game. I have resisted switching to Windows 10 for long, because I'm a "technological conservative"... I was forced to because otherwise my new printer couldn't even be detected. And now I discover that I can't play the game anymore...
The AGS method doesn't work. I downloaded AGS, moved the acwin.exe file to the game folder, but when I click it, it says: "Executing code cannot be continued, because SDL2.dll object was not found. Reinstalling the program could solve this issue" - I don't even know how to reinstall the program! I have nothing but game files!
The Scumm VM method doesn't work either. I know that Scumm VM "reacts" to folders, not single files. But when I "show" it the QfG2VGA folder, it says: "Scumm VM found no game in this folder!". My version is 2.8.1, so the game should be supported...
Please, help me. I don't want to be sentenced to eternal lack of access to this game...
P.S. Just in case: I'm a computer-only player. I couldn't even play the game on a smartphone, if it's now possible, because I don't have one - another sign of my technological conservatism, or maybe rather autistic stiff habits...

I downloaded and installed the Windows copy of the game on Windows 11 today; it seemed to run okay. I installed ScummVM 2.9.0 also and added the folder the game was installed to and it added fine. It works better under ScummVM as it scales the game without having to change the screen resolution and stuff, and also allows full-screen toggle, windowed mode, mouse capture/release, etc. And it imported saved games from QFG1VGA without any additional configuration or needing to copy the saved game.
When adding the folder to ScummVM, be sure to add the folder that QFG2 was installed to (i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\AGD Interactive\Quest for Glory II), not the folder you downloaded the installer to. I also used the ScummVM installer. If you are upgrading from a very old version of ScummVM, you might want to delete the config ini file in the %APPPATH%\ScummVM folder to return all settings to the newest defaults. The only change I've done is to (1) clear existing keymaps for fullscreen mode (2) then, add alt-enter keymap for fullscreen mode. I did that in the global options area of ScummVM.
