Well then, looky what I found!
I dug up my original king's quest three -- the best sierra quest game of all time (in my opinion of course). love the typing interface and the manual walking.

And I just turned Manannan into a cat.

A few weird problems though. It seems that sometimes, even when the floppy drive works from windows and from dos, it doesn't think the original disk is in the drive -- unless I run the game straight off the disk (ah the good ol' days) in which case changing screens is very slow. No biggy, I just keep trying. Here's the big problem. Whenever there is 'music' as far as it can be called music, through the pc speaker, my display goes all funny. Random ansi characters everywhere, screen resolution changes back and forth, can't type. When the sound stops, the display resumes -- with the crud until it is redrawn by walking over it, the screen changing, or me hitting the inventory screen. If I turn off the sound, everything is fine.

Also, fast is as slow as it always was, but fastest is beyond visible leave alone controlable. But when sweeping the kitchen, it's an effect right out of the matrix. He's everywhere all at once -- and sweeping!

But hey, I'm just amazed that it's playable, and I love it to death. Here's the cool part. Remember the manual? The spell book I mean. Well, it looks old, it even smells old! The pages have begun to curl and crumple, the text has begun to fade, it's starting to turn yellow, there are some stains and the occasional food particular embedded in the page. It feels so creepy!

So, if anyone has been dying to play, I've got it. And I'm loving it!

Re: Well then, looky what I found!
That's the typical thing of those AGI (and perhaps SCI too) games. Slow is slow, normal is normal and fast is fast. Fastest is basically what it says, as fast as your computer can go. Feel lucky. In the original KQ1 you only had 3 different speed settings; slow, normal and fast. (fast was in fact fastest)

Normal was too slow to travel large distances through Daventry, but fastest got you killed in a few seconds since you always ended up in a lake and died. (since you had to push the = button to make Graham remember he could swim)

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/nashg ...

Hey Hey Hey!! Troller420: Don't dis on QFG5 please.

I think that Qfg5 was probably the last good adventure game done by Sierra. My opinion don't bite me for it. It did have a lot of fighting I agree. But it had a beautiful storyline, with great music. ANYways. . . . The best ones of the the series were... QFG2 and qfg4! Hard to argue I think. Kq3 and Kq6 were the best of the Kings quest. Sq3 and Sq4 were very good too.

MOE had a lot of problems. I don't know WHAT Sierra was thinking. I didn't hear ANYBODY say that Kq8 should be a hack and slash kindof not really adventure game. I can't call it a sequel at all. (WHO IS CONNER?)

*deep breath* Thank you <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Space Quest...
Eh, I'm going to have to say that The Next Mutation was the greatest of the Space Quest series, with Time Rippers coming in a close second. Pestulon wasn't good at all, IMO. It was obvious that the two guys had temporarily run out of ideas for a Space Quest game, so they put themselves in the spotlight in place of a real plot.

Re: From games from the past to future
The only reason kq3 walkthrough was 4pgs long is because pf the spells which they already gave you in a manual while the actual game was very short. I wish there was a way to figure out spells for yourself instead. Even though I really enjoyed the flying there wasn't much plot like there was in 1 and 2.

Old Sierra Games
It has been a VERY long time since I played these games. I never did actually manage to finish KQ3 (I could never figure out how to turn Manahan into a cat!!) I found my old 5 1/4 inch floppies (LOL) and installed it again (can't find my manual, been using walkthroughs for the spells). Crazy, this is taking me as long this time as it did the first time years ago. I love it though. It still as fun today as it was back then. I have had it up to my eyeballs with shooters (MOE included - I didn't like it all that much).
These two series (King's Quest and Space Quest) are probably the best games in the history of games - the design, the gameplay, and having to use your head to figure it all out - you don't get this kind of quality game play today. If a new KQ or SQ comes out, I'll be first in line to buy.
Just my two cents . . <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

kq3 spellbook
I agree, KQ3 was and always has been my favorite of the series! (Although I really like KQ6 as well.) I wish that I could get my paws on KQ7!! I couldn't care less about KQ8, but I was unlucky enough to buy the collection *before* KQ7 came out, and I was never able to get a copy of KQ7. I've never even played it!

Anyway,
One nice thing about the older episodes (KQ1-4) is that they're small and fit in a nice little corner on my hard drive, making for a nice diversion when I'm bored. I made a txt file from my *original* manual (the collection manual that I have has errors in it) with the KQ3 spells, so that I don't have to carry my manual around all the time if I want to play the game.

I put it online so that you can grab it if you want. It's a great game! Took me forever to get past the theives and learn how to buy things in the store!

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/linkr ...

Enjoy!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 8/3/02 12:49:01 pm

Re: kq3 spellbook
While I have no doubt you put that text-file there with good intentions, the forum rules ask users to refrain from posting copy protection information on these boards.

I know the game isn't supported by Sierra, but I believe that the moderators of Sierra's KQ-forums have the official authorization to hand out copy protection information. Partly because of that, partly because we don't want to attract any negative attention from Sierra by allowing links to copy protection codes or "abandoned" Sierra games, I took the liberty to replace your link with some copyright infringing material of my own. (In case Nintendo didn't get angry at us for using the Mario sound, they'll probably go after us now)

Hope you understand.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashn ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 8/3/02 1:04:08 pm

<sigh> You're right, of course. I apologize. I did that without really thinking. I will remove the txt file from my server.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Re: One word:
Can you not post requests like this here?

Reason: If these forums become known as a place where links to abandonware and pirated software can be found/traded, then it could jeopordize Tierra's existance. Sierra are nice enough at the moment to allow us to make these games without intervening like other comanies would(such as Lucasarts). So please respect these wishes and why we have them in place.

Re:Try this
Try www.ebay.com and you can buy them there.

Re: Well then, looky what I found!
In SCI games, speed is set on a more flexible scale. While Fastest in AGI is unplayable on my 486, the fastest speed setting in SCI games, is no problem, though I may turn it down a bit when I've got some tough navigation to do.
Pidgeot
-----
Every error you find is the last one.

RE: KQIII HELP
Finally found a good KQIII forum, Hi guys. I recently dug out my Kings Quest collection CD and started to play them again. I've installed KQIII and have made it to Mannan's laboratory after he has left on his trip.

Well when I got to the spell book and have mixed the ingredients properly for the Fly spell the game does not allow me to type out the full verse for the spell.

When I type the first line it gets to the word free, but will not allow me to continue typing I have to hit enter in order to get to the second line then when I get to the end of the second sentence of the verse it stops.

If I hit enter again it says I have failed. I've reinstalled it multiple times and still it will not allow me to get past this part and continue on. I do not get any error messages.

If anybody has some insight on how to fix this it would be very helpful.

"When you find yourself in the company of a halfling and an Ill-Tempered Dragon, remember you do not have to outrun the Dragon...you just have to outrun the halfling."

HOLY COW!!! FOUR ONES IN A ROW!!!
We don't hand out copy protection codes here, so we can't really help you on that.

It's very likely you either misspelled a word or missed a comma or period in that particular line.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nasht ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 9/25/02 7:27:45 am

Re: RE: KQIII HELP
Not to be rude or anything, but I will never ask for nor give out the copy protection codes for any game that I own to anybody.

I've mixed the ingredients properly for the spell and got the message window for the verse of the spell.

I have followed the spelling and the punctuation to the letter in the first line, but it will not let me continue typing until I hit enter then I start typing the second line again correct spelling and punctuation.

When it gets to the end of that line it stops completely and will not allow me to continue typing the rest of the verse.

I have run my anti-virus program in my computer none show up, have you Erpy or anybody you know ran into this problem and might have a solution other than a programming one?

This is driving me nuts, because all the rest of the series IV through VI work just fine with their codes, along with I and II.

"When you find yourself in the company of a halfling and an Ill-Tempered Dragon, remember you do not have to outrun the Dragon...you just have to outrun the halfling."

I think...
There might be a typo in your manual. I'm not sure of this, but I think the collection one had the mistake. *shrugs*.

Re: I think...
Yeah, it's possible that your version has a mistake. Without giving out too much, I can tell you that the line needs to start with a capital letter, there's a comma at a point and it has to end with a period.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nasha ...

Re: I think...
If that is the case I will try and see if the period at the end will work. If that doesn't work then I must have a bug in the game.

"When you find yourself in the company of a halfling and an Ill-Tempered Dragon, remember you do not have to outrun the Dragon...you just have to outrun the halfling."

Re: I think...
Typos suck now how many are ther in this blasted manual!!!!!!

"When you find yourself in the company of a halfling and an Ill-Tempered Dragon, remember you do not have to outrun the Dragon...you just have to outrun the halfling."
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/uphantomj.show ... hantomj at: 9/25/02 7:58:55 pm

Re: I think...
As far as I know, there is only 1 bug in the manual for the Roberta Williams Anthology, two words were swapped in one of the KQIII Spells ("hither" and "thither").
Pidgeot
-----
Every error you find is the last one.
