Ok, the game is back up now on the downloads page. The music pack and speech pack aren't up yet, but should follow shortly.

FTP Server

I've got the speech pack and the game. Feel free to grab them. I'm on a cable connection, so 40K will be the max for all connected users combined.

If someone would be so kind as to upload the music pack, that would be great.

ip: 24.103.232.135
port: 21
login: upload
password: thankyou

I'm on cable, so my IP is relatively static. If it decides to change, you can always get it from here:
<a href="http://www.holophrasticenterprises.com/ ...

It's there

#6 Post by Holophrastic » Thu Mar 28, 2002 10:26 pm

It's there. I can see it.
There are currently two files:
kq1vga.exe
kqvgaspeech.exe

And I'm hoping someone will upload the music pack for me.

By the way, I will have to change the port number tonight. If 21 doesn't work for you, then it will be port 1979 -- my birthyear and bank card PIN.

#8 Post by Holophrastic » Fri Mar 29, 2002 1:48 am

Yes that's correct. But there is also a kq1vga directory.
It contains the two files, I just logged on to check, and all is well.

I just tried to download the music pack from the Upload Directory. I couldn't see the music pack, but I tried to D/l it anyway (get kgmusicpack). It gave me "Access denied.

Maybe you have permissions wrong...

#14 Post by Gwydion » Fri Mar 29, 2002 7:31 pm

At least with the upload account.. I tried using the NT based FTP client, the integrated IE FTP client, and BPFTP as well.. all show the same thing, /bin, /pub, /usr, and /upload.. All are either empty or access denied..

Hold on a minute

#15 Post by Holophrastic » Fri Mar 29, 2002 9:21 pm

Ok, I'm here to announce two things. First of all, the port is now 1979.

Secondly, the music pack is now available (in the kq1vga) directory.

Now, on to technical difficulties.
First off, the upload directory does not let you list its contents. That I have set intentionally. It is the upload directory and not the download directory. I intend to check files (for viruses and corruption) before serving them.

Secondly, I redid the kq1vga permissions. I've had no problem logging in and downloading the files myself, so I don't know why you can't. I'm using the dos ftp and ws-ftp le.

Hmmm...

#18 Post by Erpy » Fri Mar 29, 2002 10:14 pm

I'm using WS_FTP LE and I still can't see the KQ1VGA-directory. (it's not like I need it, anyway, but some others might have trouble too)

Anyways, you might want to post the info about this FTP at the top of the general forum in the "mirror-topic" there. More people visit the general forum and Tierra's desperately looking for available mirrors right now. (it's been hella crowded ever since they appeard on slashdot.com)

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashn ...

Thx lots - downloaded game from official site (worked, for a wonder), then speech pack from the ftp server. Currently downing the music pack - but it's kinda slow, strangely, 14 kb/sec. was faster before

Kinda slow?

#21 Post by Holophrastic » Sat Mar 30, 2002 3:29 am

The reason it's kinda slow is because the max upload for cable is 40K/sec and I've set the max connections for you guys at 5. So 40/5 you do the math.

Good to hear you guys appreciate the service.

Actually I e-mailed Tierra after my first post here. They have all the information, and are adding the link to the download page for as long as I can keep the server running.

Actually, I need to reboot my machine now, but Someone is amidst a music pack download. They are 25/34 megs. I feel terrible. I guess I'll have to cut my work short and go play pool until the transfer is complete.

Surely the FTP server supports resuming, so that's no problem?

Well...

#23 Post by Holophrastic » Sat Mar 30, 2002 11:33 am

Well I hope everyone is happy, it certainly seems that way. Today alone, the server has served 23 files and 600 megs.

Oh, by the way, I dug up my original king's quest three -- the best sierra quest game of all time (in my opinion of course).

And I just turned Manannan into a cat.

A few weird problems though. It seems that sometimes, even when the floppy drive works from windows and from dos, it doesn't think the original disk is in the drive -- unless I run the game straight off the disk (ah the good ol' days) in which case changing screens is very slow. No biggy, I just keep trying. Here's the big problem. Whenever there is 'music' as far as it can be called music, through the pc speaker, my display goes all funny. Random ansi characters everywhere, screen resolution changes back and forth, can't type. When the sound stops, the display resumes -- with the crud until it is redrawn by walking over it, the screen changing, or me hitting the inventory screen. If I turn off the sound, everything is fine.

Also, fast is as slow as it always was, but fastest is beyond visible leave alone controlable. But when sweeping the kitchen, it's an effect right out of the matrix. He's everywhere all at once -- and sweeping!

But hey, I'm just amazed that it's playable, and I love it to death. Here's the cool part. Remember the manual? The spell book I mean. Well, it looks old, it even smells old! The pages have begun to curl and crumple, the text has begun to fade, it's starting to turn yellow, there are some stains and the occasional food particular embedded in the page. It feels so creepy!

So, if anyone has been dying to play, I've got it. And I'm loving it!

:) nostalgic memories

#24 Post by Duarh » Sat Mar 30, 2002 5:26 pm

This does bring up some nostalgic memories. . .KQ3 was the second Sierra adventure game I played, after Larry 1. Must've been something like 9 at the time. It was SOOO fun. . .reading this, I'm thinking perhaps I should find it again and play some more

e-mailing

#25 Post by Duarh » Sat Mar 30, 2002 6:00 pm

Ah, yes, by the way-is it possible to send something as large as the archived game, speech & music by e-mail (separately)? Simply, I don't have net @ home & would have to download KQ1 somewhere where I can burn it into a disc to BRING it home - but foreign traffic costs aplenty in Latvia in those places where I have access to a cd burner. . .
