What's your favorite king's quest and why?
Hi guys. I was curious as to what was your favorite game in the King's Quest series, and why? When was the first time you played it? What was your life like back at that time? Can you remember any good memories? What kind of memories do you have about the game, and things that happened inside the gaming world? Or, just talk about your experience in general...

I'm interested in hearing what you guys have to say!

Re: What's your favorite king's quest and why?
Ummm...lessee. King's Quest 3 was the first KQ-game I played. I hardly knew any english at that time and hardly knew what to do. It was a slightly *cough* unofficial copy. (without manual, so I never finished it without cheating)
Yet I was fascinated by the KQ-series and I later laid my hands on KQ4, which remained my favourite for a long time because of the cool (at that time) backgrounds and story. I don't know which KQ had the best story, 3 or 4, but since KQ4 was technically more advanced it brought the story better. (having a good story is one thing, but the thing that really matters is how that story is brought to the public)

When the KQ collector's edition came out, I bought it. Later I bought KQ7 and KQ:MOE as well. Now I have them all, I'd say KQ6 is my favourite because its story, lots of dialogues and well-developed characters.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashh ...

Re: What's your favorite king's quest and why?
I'd have to say KQ2 is my favorite KQ in the entire series. I remember playing it back in the early 80's on my dad's Tandy 1000. It was an awesome game. I think I played through it at least 50 times over the course of the computer's life. And KQ2 was my first King's Quest title, so maybe that's why it holds a special place in my heart.

P.S. Is there something wrong with your hotmail account, Milan? I can't send you anything anymore. :-( Drop me an email.

To Heir Is Human
While I think KQ6 was the most impressive, my heart will always go for KQ3. Not only was your own identity a mystery (since you knew yourself as Gwydion, and had never before seen prince alexander), but you got to do what we always wanted to do -- use the wizards magic against him and all!

And I adore the typing and keyboard interface.

Not knowing your own identity, the entire plot line was revealed smoothly, not even knowing we had a sister, not knowing that the magic mirror had faded or anything of the sort! There were time limits when it came to defeating Manannan, it was great!

Re: To Heir Is Human
My favorite is probably 6, and I liked 7 pretty well also (except for that pathetic Disney ripoff intro where Rosella sings), maybe because it was the first one I played. And I guess 8's alright too, since because it's 3D there's a bit more freedom to exploration (although I've only played the game for about 30 minutes total :P)

I think one of the worst games was KQ5; all of the horrible voices (and no option to turn them off!) and the millions of dead ends were very annoying. Really too bad, because it's got very nice art and a pretty good storyline.

But I'm sure that KQ2 will easily be the best when it's finished <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Favorite game...
Gotta be KQ6. Fantastic voice acting, fantastic room art, fantastic plot, well-developed characters (totally unlike the flat personalities of characters in KQ5), and great puzzles. Not to mention two endings for added replayability, and some actual humor -- something I'd never seen before in a Kings Quest game. Alexander playing the xylophone with skeleton bones, dressing in women's clothing to infiltrate the Castle of the Crown... great stuff <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Re: Favorite game...
Hey Reese...maybe my hotmail is full. I'm going to go and try to erase any junk mail, and hopefully when you retry, it will go through!

As for my favorite King's Quest, I have a lot really, for many different reasons. But, if I had to choose ONE, it would definitely be King's Quest 3. I remember walking into my parents room one christmas morning, and my dad and sister were playing it. I was really young at the time, and was just in awe with it...I couldn't believe that that silly contraption that my dad was always working on could actually make pretty graphics and tell a story! Yet, at the same time, I had no reason to believe that it wouldn't be able to....so, I quickly began to associate computers with really cool Sierra games!

I remember Manannan scared the crap out of me, when he'd show up in that puff of smoke. I loved making the magic spells..and the fact that they were hard to read even made it more fun, because you got nervous that you'd die when typing them in! I still remember the creepy music that played when performing a spell! I hated that stupid black cat ,and found it really frightening to make my way down the winding path to the base of the mountain! I was always afraid Manannan would come back early from his journey, and find me trying to make a run for it.

The oracle was always really mysterious to me, and I loved the watching the wild birds frollicking in the water. I was scared of Medusa, and I was intrigued by the thieve's hideout in the tree. The tavern was cool, and I loved stowing away on the pirates ship! I loved the general store where you could pet the dog...but I hated the sharks...

What a great game that was!

I also like King's Quest 1 VGA for obvious reasons, hehe. I also loved the AGI version of that game, because it was one of the earliest games I played. I used to hang out with a girl in 1st grade, and I thought she was super cool because she had a copy of it.

I liked King's Quest 2 a lot. It had a feeling that was very unique...that I didn't get when playing the other games. I can't quite put my hand down on it.

King's Quest 4 was great, too. Loved the mansion,...it was so spooky... and how you could check the time on the old grandfather clock. I liked the dwarves (and the tune that played in there...it was catchy!), and the unicorn...but I hated the whale. I could never find the correct spot to get out!

I loved King's Quest 5 because it was the first time that I really saw a Sierra game as a work of Art, and not just a form of entertainment. I had always loved Disney, so, seeing all the concept sketches reminded me of those "making of" films that I really get into.

King's Quest 6 was excellent on all counts. But I think by that time, I was more into the Quest for Glory series...so, it didn't really stand out as being my all time favorite game.

King's Quest 7...I got annoyed with it pretty quickly. I don't know what it was...but it just didn't click with me.

King's Quest 8: I bought it not too long ago, and tried playing. It was ok...nothing too great so far. But, I didn't get too far into it because there was a bug that made all the colors go wild...so I had to quit!

I'm looking forward to KQ2VGA though! It reminds me of a KQ meets QFG for some reason...and it has tons of those "goosebumps" moments! Not scary wise...but, just, "it's that good" wise... Just, some of the music that Tom has been writing...with the storyline...it's just incredible to me...I can't wait to play it from start to finish.

Anonymous Game Developer #1

Hmmm...
Rather than choose a favourite (which would be difficult), I'll do what AGD1 did and list what I liked and didn't like.

KQ1 - First KQ I played...only the second Sierra game I played next to Leisure Suit Larry (my dad bought the games back then..hee hee). I liked it much better than Larry because at that time I was young so I didn't understand the humour of LSL. KQ1 was fun, and it helped to know some fairy tales to be able to solve the puzzle. The EGA remake was sub-par IMO and I never finished it, and...well...if you don't already know my opinion of KQ1VGA let me just say... WOW!!! Loved the art and music and the point-and-click interface made it an instant classic. (I am such a suck-up, aren't I?! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> )

KQ2 & KQ3 - I didn't play KQ2 or KQ3 until I got the King's Quest Collection, so by that time I was spoiled by point-and-click and VGA graphics. They were still excellent games, however, and like you, AGD1, I was constantly creeped out while seeking spell components because I expected Manannan to come back at any second and zap me! I liked the creepy feel of Dracula's Castle in KQ2 (can't WAIT to see how you guys remake that part!!!) and the overall theme of the game was good. The lack of music and background noise (birds chirping, raging rivers, etc.) was disappointing, but then again, none of the AGI games had those elements. Again, excellent games despite the fact that I played them after all of the later ones.

KQ4 - Wow. Fantastic game. The only one in EGA (except the shoddy KQ1EGA remake), and an outstanding game. I liked being able to swim across the sea, barring any Jaws attacks, to find a beautiful, fairytale-like castle. Then on the mainland, you had the chilling haunted house, complete with the secret wall and winding staircase. Right outside there was the graveyard where you had to find things to please all of the ghosts in the house...brilliant! And who could forget *shiver* Lolotte!!! KQIV was a perfect game, were it point-and-click (here I go again!), and I loved the amount of espionage involved in sneaking into the Ogre's house, hiding in the closet, sneaking out while he escaped. Just a marvelous game all-around.

KQ5 - This game was fun as well. I don't really understand why many people didn't like this game. It had many of the elements that made its predecessors fun coupled with (yay! Finally!) point-and-click interface and VGA graphics. My favourite part of this game was the witch's forest. How you trapped her in the Genie's bottle, you used the honeycomb and gems to capture the elf, the little door carved in the side of the tree. A creepy atmosphere with cheerful elements. Masterfully done. The dead-ends, however were rather irksome, I'll agree. I mean, okay, a cat chases a mouse. A cat catches a mouse. Interesting. *Save game*. WHAT?!?! You were supposed to STOP the cat?! WHY!?! *Restart game*. Other than that, it was a very enjoyable experience and I'd love to play it again, but alas my computer doesn't like that idea as much as me.

Oh yeah, and btw...I even liked Cedric! *Gets ready to dodge anything thrown at me*

KQ6 - Another fantastic KQ game. The music to this game was phenominal and it had yet another engrossing theme. Loved the two separate endings idea as well. I always did the long ending because I loved the Land of the Dead (hee hee...'Dem bones, ya know!). I don't think I can say much about this game that hasn't already been said a ton of times, but I'll just say that this game was top-notch in every aspect. However, like AGD1, I was into QFG by this time and I simply ADORE the QFG series, so that was what primarily captured my interest at that time.

KQ7 - Hmm...not a bad game but it could have been better IMO. Didn't care much for the cartoony graphics and I really don't like the interface used in this one (the normal wand and sparkling wand). Personally, I much prefer the WALK, TALK, LOOK, USE ITEM, etc. interface. If this game had had the same graphics and interface of KQ6, it could have been outstanding. At least, that's what I think.

KQ8 - Never played. Probably never will. Don't really care for what I've heard about it and it doesn't seem like KQ to me.

So I don't really have a favourite, I just like all of them but for different reasons. Now that I think about it, that wasn't really the question you asked, was it, AGD1?! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> Oh well, everyone likes reading my nonsense, don't they?! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

~Wolfgang

Re: Hmmm...
KQ6 is my favorite. The music, plot and sound effects are superior to any of the others. KQ5 comes in a close second. It was my very first KQ game (my very first Sierra adventure game for that matter). Seven had great plot, music and sound effects, but I really wish they hadn't used the "immature Disney" graphics. KQ8 doesn't seem anything like KQ to me, but it's still a really awesome game. Four is really kewl, as is two. KQ1 is great (especially the VGA remake <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> ) but it does have several loose ends. KQ3 is fun but I was never able to finish it due to a bug in my copy <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":("> .
Then the bartender said "Wait-a-minute! Hello all....

My favorite has to be KQ1....
WAY back when, my best friends parents bought an IBM PC jr... if i remember right the game came with it.....we played for hours and hours...uh...even weeks i think... before we finished it.....then again when KQ2 came out.....after that we waited eagerly for III but alas...i moved away *sigh*

after many years i built my own computer, having forgotten about KQ i saw KQ7 at Wal-mart one day, picked it up....old memories started trickling back....downloaded KQ1-4 i think (illegally i know) not being able to find them in bargain bins....
and started playing them....hehe, i had more fun playing KQ1 again <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

finally found the box set so i have all of them....legally <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
even MOE, which though its a nice game, i will never call it a sequal, and am still waiting for KQ8

Love this remake....and i hope everyone likes it as well as i....
waiting "patiently" for the next one

nuff said

i liked kq5 because it was the 1st game with very good graphics and i liked the storyline.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/ufender178.sho ... nder178 at: 5/20/02 10:45:53 pm

Re: What's your favorite king's quest and why?
I have to agree with Neocron, Kings Quest 2 is a classic. I, personally, loved this game because of the vague storyline, and pretty weird happenings out of nowhere, all put together in a silly-little pixely game with the annoying bell above the church. Oh man, those were the days... I just don't like how Hagatha is related to Manannan and Mordack. She was fine as an insane, cannabal, and making her seem more sophisticated kind of ruined her.

My favorite KQ
Well, lets see...

KQ1 - That is no the first KQ game I played, but one time in my 7 years, in 89 I bought it from my friend on PC. I remember one quite funny thing, when I stuck on some puzzle, I go and read a fairytale, and then complete the puzzle. Fairytales were my walkthroughs. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

KQ2 - Now that is the first game I bought from KQ Series. I was only 6 years old, and when I entered the Draculas Castle, I had so scary feeling, that I asked for brother or one of the sisters to go through it.

KQ3 - I really liked this game, because of one bug, that was because vol files were not full (and my version of game was unlicinsed and translated). Manaan appeard, then he supposed to kill me, but there was no animation, and after some time, he disappeared. But I staid alive! But I liked it because of story too.

KQ4 - My sister played this game alot of times, and I only one. That was the first game that we bought on my new Pentium I. And it was good, but I didn't understand it, don't know why, so I can't say about this game something.

KQ5 - I bought this game fully translated on Russian with voices, but I didn't complete it, I still liked it. I liked that easy point and click interface, and it was easy to use it.

KQ6 - I played this game with a dictionary "Dutch-Russian". Yes, I played it on Dutch, that was one of the best KQ games. And it is my favorite. I liked the story, I liked the two ways to complete the game - easy and hard (short and long). That is the best game.

KQ7 - Never played.

KQ8 - I boyght it, insttalled it and don't played it. It requirements were to high for us for that time. But still I played the Demo in 2001.

Well, here is how I like it:
1. KQ3 & KQ6
2. KQ1
3. KQ2 & KQ5
4. KQ4
5. KQ8
6. KQ7

Re: My favorite KQ
I don't recall a dutch version of KQ6 being in existence. I suppose you mean the german version.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nasha ...

I just don't remember
That was so long time ago, so I don't remember.

Re: I just don't remember
My first game played was KQ5, but I didn't get very far in it, and I was about as annoyed with Cedric as all the other Sierra programmers were. My favorite is King's quest 6, cause I like Alexander, and it was good to see him grown up and looking for love. He being way more subtle and charming than Graham.

well im not sure what my fav King's Quest is.....i was always a Space Quest guy <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> ...my favorite of that was SQIV.

but King's Quest...hmmm.........probably 5 or 6. ive never played King's Quest 2, 3, 6, 7, or MOE through to the end....and i have barely touched King's Quest IV.....and by barely i mean "played-it-once-and-visited-a-couple-screens-and-quit." but now ive heard a lot about it and i want to play it but i lost my manual so i cant get by the copy protection!!!! aarargrggggg

"Requires MCGA, CGA, VGA, PGA, or TA-RA-RA-BOOMGA!" - Gary Owens, SQ4

Fav KQ
Much like many people I liked KQ1 the best. I have the original in my house someware for my old XT computer. As I got older I bought KQ2, 3,4, and I remember begging my dad to install KQ5 on his 386 computer cause it wouldn't work on the XT. (he gave it to me cause he bought a new one, needless to say I needed his for all newer games) he finally cracked. SO I got to play KQ5 and I honestly didn't beat it till 5 years later.
Still never beat Kq6 since i lost the copy protection manual. and KQ 7 I beat with no effort which made me angry. and I played kq8 once and it is in a box in my closet now lol.

Re: What's your favorite king's quest and why?
I think the near unanimous vote is that KQ3 and KQ6 both seem to stand out most, for various reasons. I'm with Milan choosing 3 as the favorite, and I'm glad to hear how passionate you are about it since that might help inspire Tierra to do 3 as a future project to make the KQ VGA trilogy complete!

I think 6 is just a "better" 5, in terms of voice, cinematics, etc, and so I almost would choose 5 as better instead of 6. I think the story of 5 is more universal and in that way, more appealing as a myth in the King's Quest universe. Also, 5 was the last Graham story, and it was so warm and beautiful in 320x200 VGA before 6 went higher resolution. Unlike lots of other Sierra series, King's Quest only had #5 in 320x200 VGA!

I only bought KQ7-8, my dad bought all the others. At that time, I was getting into QFG and I bought the 1-4 collection that included the QFG5 demo/soundtrack disc. I wish I had bought other Sierra collection sets when they were available. I don't remember playing KQ a lot cause I was younger (what pieces here and there I do remember was fondness), but I vividly remember a wonderful summer filled with Quest For Glory when I played those games for the first time, and played them all the way through in sequence and without hints.

Re: Um?
Sorry, I forgot it's normal VGA, but it's also higher-res VGA as well... since KQ6 is playable for DOS and Windows. In Windows you get the higher resolution, including those beautiful character-talking sprite popups.

Re:Um?
you can play KQ5 in DOS and Windows too...i dont think it was a higher resolution....not much anyway...maybe somthn like from 320x200 to 320x240...but that would be all i think
