A Silly Question Reguarding Graham's Dialog Picture

#1 Post by Nadine » Tue Apr 02, 2002 1:15 pm

I'm sorry. This really is a silly question, but I want to ask the developers at Tierra this.

Why did you make a dialog picture for Graham from scratch when you could have just used the one from King's Quest 5? The same picture is also in Sierra's Hoyle 3 Board game for Graham. I forget whether Graham made an appearance at the end of King's Quest 6, and if his picture was different there - so I can't recommend that one because I don't remember it.

I'm just curious, because you did use the same little walking Graham that was in King's Quest 5.

Well, I think Tierra just wanted to use only those graphics they truly needed. I don't think they had much choice with the character sprite. They could have made him completely different, but the only result would be that players would say "that's not the real Graham". (I could almost swear that Graham's hair in KQ1VGA was black while it was gray in KQ5)

Dialogue pictures allow for more variety, since the player can never completely determine what Graham's face looks like by just looking at his character sprite.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nasha ...

Also, Graham is at least 20 years younger in KQ1 than he was in King's Quest 5. It wouldn't have matched to have an older man's dialog picture, when he's supposed to be a young Knight. The Dialog picture for KQ1VGA is based off the picture of Graham that is displayed in KQ1 EGA when you quit the game.

You'll also notice that we changed his sprite hair color to black, rather than grey to make him look younger.

Furthermore...

Furthermore, Graham's picture from KQ5 was a lot smaller than what KQ1VGA called for, and was of a lot less quality.

great job!

Oh, yes I get it. Ofcourse he is younger. I don't think I noticed him having black hair though.

And you say it was based on a picture of him in KQ1 EGA. Okay, see I never played KQ 1 - 4, or 8. I've played and won # 5 - 7, so I didn't know about that picture. So yes, this game is completely a new experience to me, and I can't believe I can play it for free! You guys have done a fantastic job, though a lot of it is really Sierra's work, huh? Never the less - GREAT job! I can't help it, I'd hate to play the game with uglier graphics and typing text if I can avoid it. So thank you so much for this opportunity to not only play the game for free, but to play the best version of it available.

It's really a shame neither you guys nor Sierra make any profit off of it, but in any case, myself and probably many Sierra/adventure fans out there really appreciate your remakes of these games, and your original project: Royal Quest, I am also really looking forward to. Great job you guys!

Thank you for your kind words, Nadine. Doing these remakes is our way of keeping the classic games we all enjoyed in the past alive. As for Royal Quest I, that project has been put on hold indefinitetly. We may start work on it again in the future, but it probably won't be anytime soon. However, don't despair! This has enabled us to focus our attentions not only on KQ2VGA, but QFG2VGA and our secret project.

:-)

Neocron
Online Community Director
Tierra Entertainment

remakes

#7 Post by Nadine » Wed Apr 03, 2002 2:47 pm

Ugh. It's annoying that I always have to put a subject when I just want to respond. Does this have anything to do with me being a guest?

I just read your FAQ. That's really too bad that Royal Quest has been canned. First you were planning on making it, and because of the use of similar art or something you decided to remake KQ1 too, but you decided to really think about what Tierra is all about, and Royal Quest didn't represent your name well and you canned it, is that it? Well, in the future, once it is well known what you are about it should be okay to make atleast one game with "immature adult humour" or whatever Royal Quest was going to be like, right?

I don't understand how come you guys have made that remake so professionally since you have no other game-making experience. Is making games really that easy? You just need a lot of time, a couple of multi-talented people, and the right software? I feel kind of bad for you then, because you are so busy with doing this and it takes so long, but you still keep up the website, respond to forum posts, and are stressed with all these requests for more and more games to remake or original games to create!

If other fans could also make games as well as you guys do, than we could try to make games for ourselves rather than stressing you out! But, I am worried about how much time it takes, where I will find a programmer, a musician, a background artist, a sound FX person, etc. The only talent I have is drawing cartoon animal characters (never learned to animate yet), and I'm no good at drawing people, and I don't have any other talents and don't have Photoshop or know how to use it. I wanted to make new monsters and a new playable character for Duke Nukem 3D, but even that sprite-based 3D game seems very hard to be creative for.

So, while I'm taking college courses, I just play a lot of games and practice drawing. One day, I will make games or atleast design and animate characters for them. Until then, I really appreciate you guys trying to keep the adventure genre from dying!

Your on the right path, Nadine. Playing lots of games and taking college courses is a step in the right direction. However, making games definitely is not easy. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and a lot of time. Add to the fact that the people who work for Tierra do not work face to face means that the internet is our only means of communicating with one another.

I'm really glad you enjoyed KQ1VGA. I think you'll really enjoy KQ2VGA. :-)

Neocron
Online Community Director
Tierra Entertainment

Do you happen to be a Virgo or a gemini, Nadine? I sense a critical streak in you that is so very common to Virgos (and often geminis)...I would know, I'm a Virgo, with my moon sign in Virgo as well...It really takes effort to curb my criticalness...so instead of taking it out on others, I just take it out on myself. Works wonders...keeps me always on the path to improving myself, as well as keeping others from thinking I'm somewhat of a ,well, you know what...

Anyhow, as for always having to type in a subject when you want to respond, have you tried to submit a post without the subject? Does it allow you to? If not, I'd just recommend registering...and that should most likely take care of that problem... I'm not positive about this though, as I haven't had the problem myself recently...

As for RoyalQuest, I'm all for immature adult humor...that's one thing. And RoyalQuest started out on that path. But, overtime, it started bordering on offensive, rather than immature. If we'd made royalquest, it would have required an entire rewrite, and the game just wasn't worth it when we have so many other, more interesting projects that many more fans would enjoy. As for the KQ1VGA project, AGD2 and I had always been interested in that, and wanted to do that along with RQ. We hadn't assumed that KQ1VGA would have been the game that surived and would have received the most interest from the fans...we hadn't realized that so many people really wanted adventure games back! And once we starting noticing this, we realized, it WAS an obtainable goal...of showing the big wigs at the adventure game companies that there was still a HUGE market for these games that we grew up loving.

As for making games...I don't know if I'd say it's easy or not. That's almost a philisophical question. Is sending a man to the moon easy? Is making an operating system easy? Is graduating with a double major easy? All these things take TONS of effort...but, the final goal is accomplished with a myriad of smaller, simpler, steps. If you can figure out how to chart out these steps, motivate people (even without money),mangage these people, all have a common vision, put in months of man hours, believe in what you do, have talents in art, programming, scripting, music, storywriting, gameplay and design...and keep your butt moving at an efficient pace over the course of a year or so, then making a game is easy. But, of all things I've ever done, and of all things I've ever seen anyone else do...making a game is one of the most taxing, difficult things ever done...just because of all the elements needed to finish one. STARTING a game is another question...FINISHING one, beta tested an all, is in a totally different ballpark.

As for other fans making games, there are tons of groups of fans already attempting this. A handful of smaller fangames have already been completed. As for worrying about finding all the right people to be on your team, that's just a part of the game making process...one of the biggest, in fact...which is organizing and managing the team. If you can do that, you're halfway to a completed game.

As for Photoshop and 3D, drawing, etc...you need to take it at your own pace and set realistic goals. before I made KQ1, I had some experience with Photoshop, had drawn for my whole life...even skipped a grade in art...practiced in 3D. If I hadn't had this experience, it would have been unrealistic to jump in and create KQ1VGA. But, since then, I've drastically improved with these programs. So, it's always great to challenge yourself...but, don't get so ahead of yourself that you miss valuable lessons along the way... You don't just create a math theorem by learning to add. You don't create great game with no practice..and then try to create a final masterpiece. Practice, practice, practice...that's all I can emphasize...

Good job with taking courses, drawing, and playing games. You'll keep improving with time...and start results. Just stay strongwilled...push your way forward, be optimistic, and never take no for an answer. You can put anything you put your mind to...although, it's always good to take the smartest route, as if you plan where you want to be, you have a much better chance of getting there within the least amount of time<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Anonymous Game Developer #1
