It's not Rumplestilskin, but Rumplestiltskin. (and that's close but not the correct answer) Look in the gingerbread house for a clue on how to get the gnome's real name.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/nashg ...

AGI = Adventure Game Interpreter

That's Sierra's first adventure game engine, later replaced by many different versions of SCI (Sierra Creative Interpreter). If you're playing Tierra's version of the game, it was made with AGS (Adventure Game Studio...so many abbreviations today! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> ), so you don't need to worry about the difference between AGI or SCI and the like. The reason that Arjak mentioned AGI was that the original version of KQ1 that Sierra made had a really tough and bizarre way of trying to guess the Gnome's name. You not only had to think backwards, you also had to think inverted! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

For example, the name for the Gnome in Tierra's version (as well as Sierra's SCI remake of KQ1) is nikstlitselpmur...simply "Rumplestiltskin" backwards. The AGI version was ifnkovhgroghprm. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> A wee bit more difficult to figure out, no? Basically, once you spelled the name backwards, you also had to change the letters of the alphabet... "a" would change to "z", "b" would change to "y", and so forth. I guess even Sierra thought that that puzzle was a wee bit too evil so they toned it down for the remake.

...When you look at it that way, I guess the bookcase puzzle that AGD2 put in KQ2VGA isn't all that insane! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

~Wolfgang

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... s>Wolfgang Abenteuer at: 1/22/03 7:23:19 am

Thank you for the explanation! I agree about the bookcase puzzle. I did not think it was all that difficult, but then again I was familiar with all the stories.

Your explanation of the gnome's name in the AGI version isn't quite right. You only use a backwards alphabet, you don't also write it right to left.

The SCI remake just spelled it right to left.

Proof:
N is changed to M. The last letter of the AGI answer is M = N = the last letter of Rumplestiltskin.
Pidgeot
-----
Every error you find is the last one.

When I was playing the KQ1VGA I tried "rumpelstiltskin", but it was "rumplestiltskin". Other people also had that problem.
The Knight

I remember those, KQ1 Orginal was a pain when it can to guessing the gnome's name, remake was much easier. Who would htink to reverse rumpelstiltskin, and reverse the letters too?
The Knight

The gnome's gname...

#10 Post by Wolfgang Abenteuer » Thu Feb 20, 2003 6:48 am

My dad would. And did. I still remember him writing down the letters on a sheet of paper and crossing them over, eventually going from "rumplestiltskin" to "ivnkovhgroghprm". He surprised me with stuff like that sometimes... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

~Wolfgang
