spoiler question that has probably been asked before

#1 Post by Samoht Halfman » Sun Jan 19, 2003 7:01 pm

I have played through this version of the game at some point before, but I can't remember, did you use the gnome's original name from KQ1 or his name from the Sierra remake?
"Could I be less alive?"

SPOILER:

In the original, you had to lay an alphabet against a reverse alphabet to get his name. In other words, A would become Z, B would become Y, and so on.

What about Rumpelstilitskin backwards? I haven't been able to get it to work.
The Knight

Just spelling Rumplestiltskin backwards would not work in the original. In Tierra's remake it would. I'm not sure whether it would work in the SCI0 remake or not.

This was the one puzzle that I never solved on my own. It wasn't until many years later that I actually found out the solution. One of my friends had one of those hint books with the invisible ink and you had to highlight one clue at a time. But by then, my copy of KQ1 no longer functioned. It was on a bootable 5 1/4" floppy disk. So I was never able to use that knowledge, but I remember it.

I could never get it to work with the Tierra remake. I remember that it worked with the orginal and SCIO remake.
The Knight

I can't remember which way it went at the moment, but if "Rumpelstiltskin" doesn't work, try "Rumplestiltskin" instead. A lot of people miss it by simply transposing the "e" and "l" one way or the other. But trust me, one of the two works in KQ1VGA.

~Wolfgang

I'll try both of them, and get back to you on that.
The Knight

According to bananagirl of gamefaqs.com:

Quote:
The name "Rumplestiltskin" is the one you've gotta start with. From there, you have to reverse the name, not by making it "Nikstlitselpmur," although that name works in the remake, but by reversing the alphabet.

Maybe we're both remembering wrong. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that you do still have to reverse them. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> I'm sure you already knew that, though. IIRC if you try the right one without reversing it, you'll get a "Very close" message of sorts from the gnome, indicating that you've gotten the correct spelling, you just need to reverse it.

~Wolfgang

'Sometimes its best to think backwards.' Comes to mind.
The Knight
