Trouble initializing
Sorry to add another question to the long list.. :]

I ran the installation program, and it worked fine. When I tried to actually play the game, I received the 'unable to initialize your audio hardware' error, even though I do have the latest version of Direct X. The documentation recommends opening the option menu and changing 'default DirectSound device' to 'default WaveOut device', so I went to the option menu, but the 'digital sound' drop-down box apparently has an error, because it's empty! Basically, I click it and nothing happens, except a list box only 1 pixel high drops down. So, I have no way of changing the sound option. I tried rebooting. Didn't help. I reinstalled DirectX. I tried reinstalling the game several times. I even downloaded the entire thing again and installed it, but neither the initialization or the drop-down menu cooperates. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Re: Trouble initializing
you have to click on the drop down boxes, then use the arrow keys to select different options. This is an AGS bug. Good luck!

re: trouble initializing
Oh! And here I thought it was going to be complicated. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> Thanks very much!

Now, can someone tell me why the game freezes constantly, and CTRL-ALT-END does nothing? I've rebooted a lot. I had to turn the sound effects off just to see the introduction. I've started to run the game in a window, so I won't have to reboot when it freezes. I'm assuming it's got something to do with the Windows version of AGS. Death [or at least improvement] to Windows, it won't let me play KQ6 without crashing, either. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

Re: trouble initializing
What kind of computer do you have? I have no problems with my games created in AGS in Windows, or KQVGA either. But KQ6 does crash when I try to trade lamps with the lamp seller.

Re: trouble initializing
Try posting a description of your problem in the AGS technical forum so that the creator of the engine (Chris Jones) can look into the problem.

<a href="http://pub6.ezboard.com/fdosuserforumsa ...

It's possible that you may have found a bug in the engine, since we've never had any reports like this before. Then again, as Frogman says, it may also be some kind of hardware conflict in your system that's causing the game to crash.

Re: trouble initializing
I'd like to add to this by making the following suggestion: Before you start the game, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Close Program window (or Task Manager if your using Win2000) and close down ALL programs/tasks with the exception of the following:

Explorer
Systray

It may be that something may be running in the background that is causing a conflict with AGS.

You may also want to download the latest version of DirectX (which is 8.0a) as well as downloading updated drivers for your video card and sound card.

Neocron
Online Community Director
Tierra Entertainment

Re: Trouble Initializing
Okay, I found the problem. Seems AGS doesn't like the Yamaha S-YXG50 wavetable MIDI software. Apparently AGS can only handle one wave sound at a time, and since the Yamaha uses the wave port, AGS freaks out and freezes just before playing a sound effect. It worked great when I disabled the Yamaha.
Will Chris Jones want to know this?
Anyway, thanks for your help! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Re: Trouble Initializing
Yes, I'm sure Chris will want to hear of that. That'll definitely be something to work on. =)

Neocron
Online Community Director
Tierra Entertainment

Re: Trouble Initializing
Wow, Angie...this is great! Imagine, just like in the Sierra games of old, the AGD's have managed to produce that infamous Sierra message, "Unable to initialize your audio hardware!" In case you didn't know, this is probably the most common problem involving Sierra games and MIDI soundtracks. Congratulations!

I would imagine any software synthesizer (Roland, Yamaha, etc.) is going to produce problems with games containing other digital output -- since they must share like resources.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... dowski>Tom Lewandowski at: 11/8/01 12:09:46 pm
