Save game bug (not that one, a different one!)

#1 Post by Jochen Deyke » Thu Dec 05, 2002 1:50 am

I was just playing along, minding my own business and saving a bunch (a healthy habit, IMO!) when I noticed the savegames no longer being saved as what I typed in. I'd put in my score as the name and come up with strings af gibberish (including non-character symbols such as the sierra logo) extending past the edge of the window. Since the games still loaded fine, I didn't think too much of it, until I ran out of slots - when I went to replace one of these, I got the following fatal error:

Error: Cannot display message with extended characters in SCI font

P.S. Is the background supposed to become discolored when reading the note in the mailbox? None of the other messages do that...
P.P.S. ...and how come the horse still has a breakfast message in the afternoon?

Had you used any extended characters in your save game names at all (eg. accented e, umlauted u, or anything)? If not, this could be related to the same issue as the other bug.

No.

He was using only numerical digits, 0 to 9.

There's another problem he encountered that I remember now. He had just gotten the pumpkin (and was still on the screen) when he tried to save. While the save dialog thing was still up, messages appeared in the background indicating the merchant's actions (like what happens normally when you stay too long). Then the save/cancel buttons were greyed out (IIRC) and he had to force-quit. Because he couldn't actually save the game because of this, it's unlikely to be related.

Ah ok, the reason I asked was because "I'd put in my score as the name" could mean using the French equivalent of "1 of 300 points" or whatever, where the word "points" might have a special character in it <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

The second issue you describe is a scripting issue which is probably better addressed by the AGD's.

Ok, the merchant and pumpkin timer/blanked out buttons bug has been fixed.

I have the same problem...

I had that same gibberish bug, when I try to save over my game (savegame name was 'paul' if that matters). Usually it worked just fine, but sometimes it creates a new savegame, with garbage characters.

Here's a screenshot:

<img src="http://www.sit.wisc.edu/~pmvictorey/sge ...

A history of my saves:

* I saved a once on "paul", saved once on "paul By Swamp", saved again on "paul". Saved again on "paul" but this caused the longer of those garbage entries (and the actual 'paul' save wasn't updated). Saved yet again w/ name "paul", again 'paul' was not updated, and this time the shorter of the garbage entries was created. Now, when I save to "paul", it updates the shorter of the garbage saves.

I can zip and send the savegames if you want, if it would help.

More save bug stuff

#9 Post by Captain Ascii » Fri Dec 06, 2002 11:33 am

I've been having a problem a lot like this. Sometimes, saving a new game, or replacing a 'normal' (not yet f*cked up) save creates one of those f*cked up ones with the gibberish names.

I can *restore* from these gibberish saves just fine. I can save to them, too. But, for whatever reason, I can't *select* any of these garbage saves in the Save window (though I can in the Restore window). Mouse or arrow keys, it doesn't matter...highlighting any one of them produces this message

Global script line 604
Error: SetTextBoxText: text too long

and dumps me to Windows. Since I can't select a garbage save, I can only save over one if it's the last one I created (thus being pre-highlighted at the top of the list).

Since any save I make in this situation is a garbage save, and since I can't re-save over them without getting dumped, I eventually run out of saves. Thus, I have to delete some manually before I can make any more (which are also garbage).

I figured out this much: restoring a non-garbage save that was last saved BEFORE the garbage saves started appearing causes subsequent saves from that restored game to be normal ones...until the glitch is triggered again.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that the garbage saves seem to crop up by saving in certain screens/places. Once this starts, ANY save from that point on creates garbage saves, with the only way to stop being to restore to a pre-garbage point and going from there. Garbage saves started appearing when I saved in, among other places:

-Hagatha's Cave (getting the bird)
-Outside the Castle (after getting the 3rd gem)
-The Bridge/Dwarf scene

I hope this helps...let me know if I can provide any other info that might help to squelch this bug. KQ2+ deserves no less. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

I almost forgot...I'm playing in 640x400 res with the digital music pack. My monitor can't display in 320x200 properly (it's an old POS), so I had to go with 640x400.
