bad-sounding digital music + speech (both KQ1 & KQ2)
hey y'all
great games, but a few probs with the digital sound packs.
i can download them all and they all actually run fine, but the digital audio sounds really hissy and low quality, like a badly tuned in radio. i tried switching between "directx source" and "wave out source" (or whatever they are exactly). "wave out source" made it all really jumpy and glitchy and totally unlistenable. "direct x source" is the best, but still really hissy. i haven't tried the music pack for KQ2, because i haven't had time to download it, but the mp3s in the music pack for KQ1 played fine in winamp when i loaded them as separate files.

i'm playing it in 300x200 mode, through windows 98, with no other applications running. is there any other info you need?
cheers,
dan

"So many condiments, so little time!" - Susie

Do you have the latest directX version installed?

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashh ...

Re: bad-sounding digital music + speech (both KQ1 & KQ2)
how do i check this, and where do i download if it's not? what is the latest? (i'm very un-tech as you can no doubt tell!)
"So many condiments, so little time!" - Susie

Re: bad-sounding digital music + speech (both KQ1 & KQ2)
It's available from Microsoft's site. In order to check the version, search for a file called dxdiag.exe.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nasht ...

Re: bad-sounding digital music + speech (both KQ1 & KQ2)
apparently i've got directx9.0a. thats the version downloadable from the microsoft website. i'm going to try re-installing it and see what happens.

i also have downloaded another AGS game, "the uncertainty machine", and it has the same problem with the audio - all crunchy and hissy - so its not just the KQ games.

cheers,
dan

"So many condiments, so little time!" - Susie

Re: bad-sounding digital music + speech (both KQ1 & KQ2)
It might be worth seeing if there is an updated driver available for your sound card.

I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem, so it's rather odd.

Re: bad-sounding digital music + speech (both KQ1 & KQ2)
i updated my audio driver fine.
now when i play using "wave out device" everything in peachy (no more cutting and clipping).
but when i play using "directx device" it can't initialize my audio hardware, and so i get no sound at all.

i don't know if this is still a problem, but since it works using the "wave out" option, i'm happy.

thanks for all your help!
xoxo
dan

"So many condiments, so little time!" - Susie

btw--- about dxdiag.exe, you can just start->run... dxdiag for a quicker alternative

---------

"Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?"
"Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?"
----------
Sponge Factory

DirectX 9.0a
How it says my Directx version is 9.0a, but the directx files are all 5.x? After my directx version there's a 4.x number. What's all trhis mean? Di I have Directx 9.0a or Directx 5?

Re: DirectX 9.0a
My computer shows DirectX 9.0a (4.09...) now, and showed DirectX 8.1(4.08...) before I updated it. So the part after the "4." is the same as the DirectX version.
------------------
I think therefore I am ... I think???

Same Problem
Hello--

I'm having the exact same problem with both kq2 and kq1 vga. Digital audio sounds like badly tuned radio. Nothing I do seems to help. I've messed with both the source (wave out vs direct audio) and the Dma and Irq on my sound card. I'm running it in 320x200, with DirectX 9.0b. I have a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 sound card. Running tests with dxdiag.exe, I noticed an interesting message:

"Your sound card does not support hardware buffering. Sounds will only play back from software buffers."

Might this have something to do with it?

Toby

Same Problem
Meaning . . . digital sound works with yours but not mine?
