They make jokes about 256 colour-games. Things like "You will need a new monitor to be able to display all the 256 colours..." etc. The left one can't image, why anyone wants to use 256 colours instead of 16 million colours. Only the one in the middle is happy about it, since "retro flair rocks".
PS.: They never talked about Zak in that take...

Interestingly enough, with 320x200 256 color mode being less and less supported, they have a point, although in a rather inversed way. I believe AGD2 once bought a monitor which didn't support 320x200 anymore. (which was quickly dropped off a nearby cliff)

All my monitors are LCD's...
Can't force them any lower than 800x600...
But on the other hand, KQ9... higher res, the better!

Not even 640x480? You're not using XP and basing it off what resolutions Windows will let you select, are you? Because that's just Windows, then

LCD's have a physically set resolution and use dithering techniques to use lower resolutions, but all of mine are still only capable of a minimum of 800x600.. well, one only goes down to 1024x768.
The native res on my LCD's is 1280x1024.
CRT's are just too big and chunky, and LCD tech. has now caught-up, to easily rival CRT colour and responce time. ( I have a few very new LCD's. )
EDIT: I should mention that I'm a 3d artist/animator, big LCD's are a dream!

thanks lucasfan.
picture quality increases by a small amount when you go from
256 colors to 16 million in 320x200. You have a gain in pallete mostly.
64.000 pixels are not enough to represent many many thousands of colors of true color mode on screen simultaneously. Maybe you can display 1k or 2k colors, but the difference is made from 640x480 and upwards.(307k pixels...5 times more clarity )
Grundy there is no problem, i heard that AGDs are planning to remake
king's quest 1 and 2 VGA in 640x480 and name them : king's quest 1 and 2 SVGA in order to be able to play them on modern TFTs. That will happen after completion of qfg2 vga of course.

Uh, no.
Seriously, nobody could have answered that, better than Adeyke

In the setup application for AGS games, there's a handy little checkbox that allows you to set 640x400 or 640x480 resolution, using pixel-doubling. Even if you can run 320x200 resolution, it might make it be sharper.

If you're running the game full-screen, there's no difference between the graphics from the 320x200 setting and the 640x400 setting, unless the game actually has graphics specifically made for 640x400 (which the AGDI games don't). You don't gain any benefit from first scaling it up and then fitting it to the screen as compared to just fitting it to the screen.

Yes, on LCD screens there is a difference.
LCD screens (unlike CRTs) have a native resolution, since the pixels are physically part of the screen. That's the only resolution they can really display at. Any other (lower) resolutions are achieved by smoothly stretching the image to fit the resolution of the screen.
This works moderately well for resolutions that are close to the native resolution. However, for resolutions that are much smaller, the end result is extremely blurry.
By first pixel-doubling the graphics to 640x400 resolution, the game becomes much sharper.
Edit: This isn't just my opinion or theory. I actually tested this on an AGS game. Here's a (mocked up) comparison, made in Photoshop by scaling a 320x200 and a 640x400 version of the same image up to 1024x768 using bilinear filtering:
This is pretty much what the two modes look like on my laptop screen. I think you will agree that the one on the right is sharper and better.

Zeus, where did you hear that from?
Zeus has an 'eccentric' sense of humour. I believe he was making some kind of a joke.

just kidding Swift. AGDs are not masochists

I was influenced from what i read in forum : "we make the games in order to be able to run them in modern machines"
so more modern machines (the ones with TFTs) need their update as well.... my thoughts are a little bit sadistic!
