Yes. It would be naïve of us to think they wouldn't know about us while we've been around for about 2 years.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashh ...

Sierra likes Tierra. Tierra brings them income by making their games more popular. So, Sierra allows Tierra to exist, even though Tierra is a tad on the illegal side. <_< >_>

Well, Tierra is using several characters originally developed by Sierra. As such, Sierra has copyright on that character. And, as you probably know, KQ1VGA was really just the old KQ1 with now graphics, the story line was pretty much the same.

KQ2VGA, however, was changed quite a lot, and is as such merely (loosely) based on the original.

To be brief, Tierra is really infringing copyright with KQ1VGA, but seeing as how Sierra knows about it AND doesn't do anything to prevent them, Tierra has received Sierra's approval.

Actually, I don't think Sierra really care. Although they pay the IDSA to protect their games, they could have done other things. What they've failed to realize is, that so many people still want to play their old adventure games, but because they're not being sold, they have to download them.

What Sierra SHOULD do (pay attention now, Sierra/Havas/whatever it is you're calling yourself!), is either still sell them cheaply (possibly as downloads), or make them freeware. Instead, they've made them abandonware protected by the IDSA. This makes it really hard to get those games unless you either know someone who's got them, or are lucky enough to actually find a site with the games before the IDSA finds them (of course, they're bound to be able on various filesharing networks, such as Kazaa, but not everyone wants to use these things/has the bandwidth). The only game you should be able to find easily is Mystery House for the Apple II, as Sierra released that into the public domain some years after its initial release.

LucasArts are somewhat better, as they still sell their old games, but they don't ship outside of the US.

Pidgeot
-----
Every error you find is the last one.

Then again, LucasArts also prosecutes (or threatens to prosecute) till the bitter end whenever anybody attempts a fangame based upon one of their adventure games. How many botched unofficial Monkey Island sequels/prequels are they up to now?

I've been thinking about Sierra's reaction to these games. I BET that eventually, even if it's in 20 years, they'll turn back to adventure games. I was reading an interview with Mark Seibert. He said that this was extremely similiar to TV (I think, it was a while back). In the market as of now, people all over technology. Just the neat effects. Eventually, they are going to get tired of 3d graphics, and want something more though provoking. I think that's when Adventure games and puzzle driven RPGs will make their comback. Let's hope so <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> . Anyways, back on topic. I've been thinking about what Sierra's reaction to this was. They changed their name to Sierra Entertainment. I am sure that the effect that Tierra & Kippesoep & SQ7 & KQ9 are making will in the long run, make a difference.

----------
Sponge Factory

Is the article typed out anywhere? I can't read the article text from the picture.
"Lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot; do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime"

to add to this:
Quote:
J.B.: Do you think the adventure genre is doomed to die?

M.S.: No. I think it will continue to change and develop. Those who will survive will be the ones that can find the right combination of elements to draw the sales. With the poor sales on adventure games right now, it's obvious that something has to change. Companies cannot afford to continue to lose money on projects. People love stories. Look at the sales of books and movies. Adventure games are stories. Right now, technology is king when it comes to the game market. But it won't always be that way. We've seen this kind of thing before with graphics, sound, live action, etc. Eventually it comes back around to content. When it comes to content, I think you'll see a reemerging of more story in games. Will they be adventure games? Maybe, or maybe they'll be some blend of game and story. We're already starting to see story and characters become more important in all genres. Just running around shooting things isn't enough anymore.

----------
Sponge Factory

I could be mistaken, but I think the article about LucasArts and the MI fan game was meant.

broomie posted two links to an article about LucasArts' response to Monkey Island fan games.

Troller420 said "Is the article typed out anywhere? I can't read the article text from the picture."

MuzlakOofmay responded with a link to a Mark Seibert interview to which he had referred.

With my comment, I meant that I thought Troller420 wasn't asking for a link to the Mark Seibert interview, but was instead referring to the article linked by broomie, requesting a text version of it, since parts of the images are rather hard to read.
