Just finished

Well, I just finished King's Quest II Vga this weekend. I'll give my opinion here for who is interested.
I really enjoyed it! It gave me the comfortable King's Quest feeling and at the same time it was like playing a whole new game.

I am impressed by how Tierra ameliorated the storyline. It is a very dense story, without any loose ends and everything fits in it. All the characters have a place, all the items have a function (only the stake I didn't use, but I didn't get all the points either). And all the puzzles are intertwined. This is hard enough a task at any rate, but to keep faithful to the original at the same time makes it even harder. It is like writing a poem when all the first words of the sentences are already given. Yet Tierra managed to do this. It is an achievement I can only admire.

The music is really, really good. They fit the situations well and augment the atmosphere of the game. Besides, the music is more than just a series of melodies in different screens; there are themes that very cleverly return in different situations. At times I replayed certain parts of the game just to feel the story and hear the music again.

I also like the little bit of action involved. Every Sierra-type adventure just needs to have it or it wouldn't be one.

More on the 'constructively critical' side: I think the game is just a bit too easy. I finished it much more quickly than I did the games of the original series. The fact that I have already played the original KQ2 probably accounts at least partially for this, but still I think the difficulty level of following games could be higher.

I regret the fact that there are no dead end situations. I know that many will disagree with me on this, but I think these situations add a lot to the tension of the game. Being cornered by the werewolves just wasn't as exciting as it could've been, because I knew the solution had to be within hand's reach. I missed the continuous tension of having to pay attention not to miss anything anywhere. If people want to discuss this, I will be happy to start a new thread on this subject <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

I also think the denseness of the story was a disadvantage for gameplay now and then. Especially in retrieving the third stone I really felt like I lost control. There was a story unravelling and I could only do one thing at any given situation. I know this is necessary to avoid dead end situations, but hey <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":b"> . I also understand that when the end of a story is nearing, it will become more difficult to have major freedom in places to go and things to do. So I don't think it is a very bad thing, but I just had the feeling while playing it.

At any rate it is a wonderful game to play. It has been a long time since I had the opportunity to play a 'new' King's Quest game. Tierra does a wonderful job reviving these games and I really look forward to an 'ameliorated' KQ3.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... altier0 at: 2/24/03 11:34:40 am
